Finding a new style while losing weight

I have lost 20 pounds so far. I have noticed that many of my clothes are not fitting well anymore. While I can still wear some of my clothes I am finding now that I've started to feel better about how I look I am wanting a new style. This doesn't apply only to my clothing. I think maybe my hair an makeup could use some shaking up too. I don't want to go out and buy a whole bunch of things because I am still losing, but I do want to look good. Any advice on how to update your style without spending a lot of money?

What I've done is use my bigger tops for layering. So, I bought a few stretchy camisoles and wear them underneath the big ol' baggy tops. I've made sure that I have one pair of jeans which fit me well though, so it doesn't look unbalanced, and I don't look like I'm trying to hide.

I haven't changed my hair, but I have updated my make-up. I went to Sephora and told them to just do it, then bought the things which seemed to work best.

Try shopping at thrift or second hand shops! You can find some really cute, in amazing condition clothes for really cheap! ;) I love clothes and I constantly shop and change my looks by searching through thrift and second hand shops!

I agree - check out second hand stores, consignment shops, thrift stores and even places like Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc. I almost exclusively shop at these places because there is such a variety of sizes and styles and have found some great pieces for my wardrobe.

I can relate to all of these posts! I have bought a few bottoms (thrift shop) to get me through the summer, and a couple of new tops to make me feel good (now I fit into the same size as my daughters, so there might be some sharing!) but I need to find my new style. I also have a little clip (I think it is meant for maternity tops!) that pulls in the back of a blouse a bit if it is super loose. Another thing I have done with a few favourite tops is taper the waist in a bit with my sewing machine. I got some highlights to change my hair up a bit.

I definitely do the thrift stores and discount stores. I am kind of new to makeup and hairstyling, I just never really bothered with it before. Does anyone have any good resources to get me started on the right track?

I recommend going onto Pinterest if you're not already a user, and creating a style/fashion inspiration board. After you pin a bunch of stuff you love, you may see a few common threads (no pun intended) and start to see a new style that you might enjoy trying. I have found it very helpful.

Even if a lot of the pins are designer or expensive items that are outside of your budget, they can be a great starting point for shopping excursions and give you some new ideas. For example, I recently bought a neon lime dress shirt from several seasons ago when neon was the trend (it was $3 on clearance and fit perfectly so I had to grab it), and I wasn't sure what to wear with it until I got the idea from a Pinterest pin to layer it under a very lightweight navy top and wear with "boyfriend jeans" and navy flats. I wore it the other day and got a dozen compliments and felt great.

I have never used the site called polyvore, but I know a few of my friends enjoy it for similar reasons.

As for figuring out what styles look best on your changing shape, it's a matter of trial and error. In my process of going from a size 22/24 to current size 12, I have been surprised MANY times to find that things that used to flatter me (wide leg trousers, cardigans, capri pants) no longer do much for my body - and things that aren't "supposed to" look good on larger women actually happen to work for me, such as skinny jeans and knee-length or slightly shorter straight or flared skirts with tights. You really just never know until you try! I have a ton of shirts now that I previously would have thought were for a very different body type than my own. It is almost like going through puberty again, figuring out what works and doesn't. Good luck!

I think along with the style/fashion Pinterest idea you could get some hair and makeup ideas there too. A lot of them are free and easy to try. If you have medium length or longer hair you will see dozens of ideas for styling.

One thing I'd say re: makeup is try not to get taken in TOO much by store representatives. It is great to try the "makeover" at a cosmetics counter (gotta admit Sephora's pretty great) but sometimes they prey on newbies and try to empty your wallet. If you do that, it is good to buy 1-2 things but you don't have to get it all!

Watch Youtube tutorials to find techniques on applying make-up in different ways. You don't need expensive make-up. :)

Youtube! :) You can search all kinds of tutorials on there. I love it. It's addicting though... so, be prepared to spend hours watching it. Btw, a lot of the drugstore makeup brands are owned by the more expensive makeup brands. I understand that L'oreal is related to Lancome... and, I have used both. I just switched to L'oreal because it's cheaper and just as good. Also, try ELF cosmetics, Wet n Wild, Physicians Formula... the list goes on an on.

ETA: Also, if you buy something at a drugstore like CVS or Walgreens they have a very generous return policy. So, if you are not satisfied with the color or product you can just take it back. Just keep your receipt. Sephora and Ulta also have a very generous return policy. :)
