help!!

hi! I used MFP in 2013 to help me lose weight and I was able to go from 157 to 130 through diet and exercise. I felt great, looked great, etc etc. went back to school in the fall, abandoned all weightloss efforts and now am back at 150. much to my chagrin, when I restarted using MFP I realized it now gives a generic calorie requirement based on how much you want to lose, not based on what you actually need...because of this I have been trying to stay at 1200 (my recommended) for the past two weeks and have found myself CRAZY bingeing...like my body has this overwhelming need to just consume everything, especially salt. I have not lost any weight despite hard work at the gym. what's the deal with the new system? if I remember correctly I think last year MFP had me eating 1800 a day to lose...wtf is this 1200 stuff? I want to make sure I am eating enough, so if I have to manually enter my goal I will, but how can I know if I'm eating too much?

    It's about moderation not deprivation. There are no good/bad foods, only bad eating habits. Do or do not, there is no try. You have to want it, you have to work for it, you have to realize that only you can do it.

    If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
    If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal

    I'm new to this but I wonder if you told MFP that you want to lose weight more quickly this time. If you adjust your aims so you're losing it a little more slowly (even by 1/2 lb a week) it can make a big difference to you calorie allowance.

    Also exercise can make a big difference to your calorie allowance.

    1800 before exercise for 157 lbs seems fairly high. Were you exercising before? I could see if you had a 1500 calorie goal and exercised for an hour a day, entered your hypothetical 300 calorie burn you would lose weight eating 1800 calories daily

    Plugging in your numbers, you would lose .5 lb per week eating approximately 1490 calories per day, and 1 lb eating 1240 calories per day, both before exercise. Add in exercise calories, ta da! Freebie food! I weigh approximately what you do and my account is currently setup to lose .5 lbs per week. 1200 is the minimum MFP will give you, so for sure if you told it you want to lose 1.5 or 2 lbs per week, that's what it'll spit out as your daily goal
  • lol it was hard to tell the tone of your post, so I'm just going to pretend it was a nice friendly tone and not a patronizing tone...like I said I used mfp starting jan 2013 and didn't have this issue because they didn't used to provide a blanket calorie requirement for everyone. I wonder why they changed the way they do things, because it doesn't seem particularly helpful

    I have been on here since 2011.... They haven't changed how they allocated calories, you must have changed your settings....

    You should be aiming to lose 1lb per week maximum, MFP should give you more than 1200 cals. Plus you will of course also have exercise cals.
