Calories In vs Calories Out

Hi everyone. I'm new to MFP, but not new to dieting. I just cancelled my Weight Watchers membership after going on 2 years, and 100 lbs lost. With that said, you'd think I know what cals in vs cals out means (and I do on WW). But with my last 60 lbs to go before I hit goal, I decided to try MFP along with my Fitbit. So far so good! Except because I walk almost 5 miles a day (4-5 days a week), every day MFP is saying I'm under my calorie goal for the day by almost 1000 calories (yesterday), and today it said 880 calories left for the day. My question to you all is this. If my daily calorie goal is 1500, and I burn 2200 calories a day by walking like I have been (doing my 10,000 steps a day), do I need to eat the calories I burn? Or do I just need to be sure I eat my allotted 1500 calories a day (no more no less)? I'm confused about this because I've heard people say you have to eat what you burn in exercise. Then I hear others say NOT to eat what you burn?!?

Any guidance on this would be great!!

im no fitness guru myself, but I tend to eat back some of my calories burned, but not all. I feel like everything about diet and exercise differs on a case to case basis so with this, Id just try the 1500 goal but If you do work out and still feel hungry, go ahead and have a snack! what do you use to track your calorie burns? is the 2200 from just from walking all day or from workout sessions?

I asked my dietitian the same question. She advised me to ignore the calories burned and stick with my daily goal.

Did you add in the exercises you do into your diary's settings? I walk roughly 1 1/2 miles six days a week, as well as a rotation of arm, leg, and core exercises every other day. If you do input these kinds of activities in your diary, it will take that into consideration, and give you a more accurate calorie allotment. You don't want to eat too few calories, because then, as a woman, your body will hold onto that fat even more fiercely. Female bodies are meant to be able to foster children, therefore we (generally, there are always exceptions) need more calories than men.

Just figure out what works for you. Try a couple of different things and see what works. Don't starve yourself, but don't stuff yourself either.

And, if it makes you feel better, when I joined up, my calorie allotment was supposed to be 1287, which confused me. I'm 5'9" tall. I was so freaking hungry those two days until I looked at my settings, and I came to realize that my diary somehow thought my goal was to get down to 87 pounds...Umm, not so much. ;) Different people will tell you different things, but depending on your activity outside of exercise (i.e. work, school, cleaning, shopping, etc.), your body chemistry, and your genetics, you'll get a million and one answers.

My answer: if you're starving after a workout, eat something! try to eat protein and a little sugar to regain the energy you've lost (I usually have a green smoothie. They're delicious if you've got the right recipes). Just do what's right for you. Hope that helps!

MFP needs to know both your calories in and out in order to customize its feedback to you. I've set up MFP so it can accept both positive and negative adjustments from my bodymedia fit. That way MFP knows when I've been moving without me having to enter the specific activity I've done. I'm unfamiliar with FITBIT, but it may have an app that does somethings similar.

I have MFP set so that I can lose 2lbs a week or a 1000 calorie a day deficit.

Here's what my numbers for yesterday looked like...yours will be different. But maybe you can use them as a guideline/corollary.

    Calories in 2,009
    Your Daily Goal 2,591
    Remaining 582

    Here's the translation...
    I burned 3436
    I ate 2009
    For a difference of 1428
Meaning I could eat another 428 calories in order to meet my 1000 calorie deficit.

I'm not sure why it thought I could have another 582...something off in how the two apps work together I guess.

So the numbers you are looking to know are Total you Burned. Total you ate. The difference will be your deficit (or if you overeat) your surplus.

    Does that help?

I have found the MFP's calculations are a bit off so I don't eat the calories I have burned. I have tried both ways: eating them back and not. I havr actually gained weight eating back the burned calories. So unless I'm really hungry I just make sure I have eaten my total for the day and not worry about what I net. But everyone is different and you may find that you can better stick to your goal by eating back those calories.

The 2200 is her TDEE. The 2200 includes all calories burned during a 24 hour period including those burned when sedentary.

OP, if you are using the calorie goal that MFP set up for you, you should be eating back about 50-75% of your exercise calories. The method that MFP uses already has a deficit built in so if someone were to not exercise they still would be able to lose weight.

The ones who normally do not eat back their exercise calories are usually the ones who have used the TDEE - % method to calculate their calories. The exercise calories are already factored into that goal.

    This is what I do.

My goal is 1550, but I burn usually at least 500 a day. If I'm hungry I eat back some calories, not all. Very rarely do I eat back all. It's been working for me!

I use Fitbit and MFP together. They are always different in how they calculate calorie burn.

    With MFP it as follows:
Calories Eaten less Calories Burned equals Plus or Minus for the day.

    With Fitbit
What rate you choose for your weight loss determines if you are plus or minus for the day.

For example, when I signed up with Fitbit it was recommended that I have a deficit of 750 calories per day. If I have more than 750 calorie difference between eat and burn I am OVER, if I have less than 750 calorie difference between eat and burn I am UNDER. On those very same days but MFP has an plus of whatever my actual burn difference is in a day.

A little confusing to try to match the two programs since they measure in different ways. Let me know if this information doesn't help.. :)

You can change your settings so that MFP and fitbit match up.

I have MFP set to lightly active and 1.5 loss.
Fitbit is also set -750 which is 1.5 loss.

Sync your accounts so that fitbit will add your "exercise" calories to MFP. MFP starts my day at 1200 but at the end of the day when my fitbit and has added in exercise the numbers are very close.

So yesterday MFP gave me 1560 and fitbit gave me 1544.

ETA I have MFP set to no exercise. I add in any extra exercise that the fitbit does not track.
