Eating too much?

I have recently changed up my diet. I'm aiming for 1,400 calories/day split up into a meal every 3 hours of protein and veggies with one carb for breakfast. I typically burn 350ish/day with my workout so that puts me around 1,700/day. I thought surely I would have no problem staying under my calorie goal and losing weight. However, I find that I'm always super close to the 1,700 calories a day.
Granted my calories are almost all clean (ignore the 3 pieces of cake I had yesterday!) but I still worry that I'm eating too much. Does the fact that my calories are almost all lean protein and veggies make a difference?

Hello
If you're tending to reach 1700 instead of 1400 per day, you should review your portions.
Also, stay away from all that processed food.
Vegetables and protein should be ok, eat carbs at breakfast and lunch.
I had a 1400 calories goal, and it's easy to reach it without going over, as long as you have a real clean diet0 -

no no!!! She's reaching1700 because she's eating back exercise calories earned - WHICH YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO,. Jeez!
OP, you don't say any stats (age, current weight, height, goal weight etc) but chances are that 1700 is just fine.0 -
If you're losing weight, it's not too hard. I lost most of my weight eating 1450 caloies +exercise eat back to some extent.
Now I'm losing 5 more pounds and I set my calorie goal at 1500 calorise + exercise and I'm losing 1/2 pound a week, which is what I calculated.0 -

As long as you are eating clean and eating back your exercise calories you should be fine. Are you still losing weight? If you are then you are doing great! If your weight isn't moving then lower the calories. Keep at it, you sound like you are doing everything right. X0

I agree with TavistockToad and rowen623. As long are you are still losing weight at 1700 calories a day, then you should be fine. After all, weight loss is determined by a calorie deficit. Although you may not lose weight as fast, you should still see a gradual weight loss if you are currently losing weight at this many calories.0

The only way to know for sure is to do it for a month and see where you are.
side note: eating "clean" is unnecessary for weight loss. A piece of cake will not hurt anything provided you're logging accurately and hitting your calories/macro targets.0 -
I'm 29, 146, aiming for 135. I don't eat processed foods. I eat ground turkey breast or chicken breast (4oz portions) with vegetables for my meals. I guess I'm just scared by seeing the number 1700, that seems like a lot of calories.0

A calorie is a calorie no matter if it's from protein, veggie etc. Calories from clean foods are certainly more healthy than calories from processed foods but you can still gain weight. If you having difficulty staying within your calorie range you may be expending too many calories through exercise and you need to eat more. Time to adjust what you are eating. They say protein fills you up so maybe increase your portions of lean meat to 5 - 6 ozs and see how you feel. You may also want to add some good carbs like 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown rice or a small sweet potato on days when you do cardio. If you are very active, 1700 calories isn't too much. But everyone is different and you may need to eat more while some people need to eat less to lose weight. You need to keep adjusting your meals until you find what works for you.0
