should i eat something after a workout? i looked around at some protein bars but they all have 200 calories and it cancels a lot of the workout i just had, over half since sometimes in an hour workout i dont even burn 400 calories
if i jog for an hour or an hour and a half should i eat something after?
what's a good food to eat thats easy to bring to the gym? i dont like foods that get messy or hard to prepare
something like a small protein bar would be ideal but i cant find any small ones and im afraid it will cancel out some calories i just burned
other foods are hard to take with me
if i eat the protein a few hours *before* exercise does that work? or does it have to be right after the workout?
e.g., i try to eat a meal with chicken or some other protein at dinner every day

Well, there is no such thing as a protein bar without calories. The point of the protein bar is to give you protein, not be low-cal.
If you need something to snack on with few calories, what about celery sticks? No mess, no preparation. Also, I sometimes buy an entire head of cauliflower and gnaw on that a while (but i don't bring that to the gym).
Also, you can make a regular-size protein bar smaller by cutting it in half ;-)0 -
Cottage cheese? Low cal high protein (slow release protein too) can even combine it with the celery sticks posted above or eat it like a yoghurt if you get a small pot.
Actually yoghurt is another good shout...0 -
Chocolate milk.0

Grilled turkey or chicken you can buy snack packs in the supermarket (well in the UK anyway) and they are high in protein but lowish in cals. plus there isn't any rubbish added into them.0

Depends on your goals, but if you feel you need something then it would seem sensible. Equally protein conversion immediately exercise is slightly enhanced, so it's a good time to provide the raw material for recovery....... it cancels a lot of the workout i just had, over half since sometimes in an hour workout i dont even burn 400 calories
As you should really be eating back your exercise calories anyway, aiming to hit your calorie goal plus anything you've burned off, then it shouldn't be an issue.
that said, if you're already eating back then you'll need to tweak another meal to compensate.if i jog for an hour or an hour and a half should i eat something after?
Personally I drink a borrle of recovery drink (150cals), plus a couple of pieces of fruit and a couple of granola bars after 90 minutes of running totalling 400-500 calories. But I'll have burned 1000 calories in that 90 minutes.0 -
Banana. I also put protein powder into a shaker cup and use the water fountain at the gym to fill it up when I'm done with my workout. I've also heard that low fat chocolate milk is a great option, but I don't want to stop at gas station for one after every workout.0

My favorite after workout snack especially after cardio is a plain non fat greek yogurt with some almonds and blueberries mixed in. I sometimes mix in a stevia or some walden farms marshmallow just to sweeten it up a bit. Good protein, low cal and good nutrients that your body needs for after a work out. Easy to make and bring it with you in a container. I am also a big fan of low sodium turkey jerky, an apple, grilled chicken in a baggie is easy. I try to stay away from protein bars. I do like shakes but make them myself with veggies, some berries and greek yogurt for the protein.0
