  • Yes I am going for 60 :smile: I turned 59 this June and I am aiming for more than 60. I hope to be reaching into my 80's like my dad and near all his brothers and sisters.
    Keeping active and eating healthy as much as I can will go a long way :happy: :heart:

    I'll be 56 in August. I want my excess weight gone well before I'm 60!! I want to be in good shape so I can take care of myself for a long time to come.

    I work in a non-traditional job and need to be in better shape. I occasionally go bicycling or hiking with my daughter and her husband and I'm tired of huffing and puffing. It's time to get this done. :drinker:

    Hello all you guys and gals! Sure is such an inspiration to have an army of friends beside me in this battle of the bulge. I am changing from the inside out something that I have not felt ever! This paleo diet is working, my body feels relaxed, clean and I am actually shopping better. My brain has found new working cells too, some decisions are quick and accurate, so allot of my old favorite foods have been doing more harm than adding pillows to my waist.

    I have begun to bicycle to work and home, which has added more strength to my legs, adding no impact for the knees to suffer. I was motivated to see the scale go down with this last week of riding in, I thought it would go up. Since it takes me only 15 to 20 minutes to ride to work I will put in 15 minutes on the treadmill to keep the 30 minute aerobic time. I have learned too that using the treadmill without the power, moving the tread with my feet, increases the workout.

    keep up the wonderful posts and as I say and many more with me NEVER give up on yourself. :heart:

    Just turned 50 myself... looking to do some damage before I can't do it any more.

    I want to get down to 200#, 60 more to go.

    It gets tougher as you get older.... but nothing worth a damn ever comes easy.

    57 here. I have a dysfunctional sacroiliac joint which often curtails my exercise but when I do exercise I lift heavy (using machines) to keep my core and back muscles strong. With a bit of cardio thrown in. I hate cardio <spits> it is the devils invention.

    Lost 33 and I am looking to slowly go down a bit more, not in too much of a rush, I only have to look awesome and perfect by November :laugh: for our sons wedding,

    So amazing to see so many of us slightly more mature ladies on the site, all striving towards a healthier lifestyle.

    Please don't shoot the messenger but, menopause DESTROYED my figure. I went thru menopause at 53. No "symptoms" except I didn't have to buy tampons any more, suddenly. However, by age 57 all my weight redistributed into a matronly blob shape. All the fat on my butt shifted around to my waist and midriff-- and my weight had not changed. And I have never been pregnant. My normal weight was 135 at 5' 3 1/2." I went on a diet and lost 27 lbs. Down to 108.I have not noticed any difference in my metabolism;I still lose weight fast when dieting and don't gain weight any more easily. But after losing weight, my upper arms were covered with deep wrinkles, my waist/midriff/belly in puckery wrinkles and belly hung down. Worst of all, my butt was flat and hung in wrinkles at the bottom, just like wrinkled clothes. Even the skin above my knees looked wrinkly. So I gained back.to the upper 120s where I am now. My arms are smooth again, wrinkles gone. No more wrinkles on my waist/midriff/belly because my midsection is distended by fat. My breasts still point straight ahead but look like they sag unless I hold my arms close to my sides. My butt still falls in wrinkles like wrinkled fabric. I don't have a waist if I weigh more than 118. I plan to go on a diet soon and lose 10 lbs. or so, hoping my skin has shrunk enough to where my arms will remain smooth. I have avoided exercise my whole life and have NO intention of starting now! If I had money for plastic surgery that would solve everything-- but I am rock-bottom-poor. My face looks old but I like what age has done to my upper eyelids. Makes my eyes look slitty; I like that. I can still read the tiny print on this phone screen easily. I don't wear any glasses. My teeth are healthy. I am healthy. I have been a vegan since age 18. I smoke a pack of cigarettes every day but have never been high or drunk ever. I take aspirin if I get a headache, that's all. I am too poor to take supplements or worry about nutrition. I make sure I get enough salt so that my body retains water to plump out my face and breasts. Just this past year, the skin on my body has suddenly become very dry and thin and very itchy! My face and hair are still oily. I have found that petroleum jelly or St. Ives oatmeal and shea butter lotion not only calms the itching but plumps out the surface of my skin so I look younger. I use it all over even my oily face, for that reason. I am very disgusted with what menopause has wrought on my formerly-hourglass shape. So those are the sordid details. Hopefully, it won't happen to you. I never saw it coming my way.

    Hello everyone, Since May I parked my vehicle and hit the pavement with some good shoes. I have walked 30K a week, now I am riding by bicycle and walking on the treadmill to complete a 70 minute exercise. Good news, I have lost pain in the upper glutes and back of legs during my work days, no more of that and I really don't miss it. I am following a very clean Paleo diet plan and it is working very well. I see my eating has decreased due to real food being eaten and properly prepared. I am getting the proper amount of nutrition for my bodies needs and that alone is a real wake up call to stop the overeating and cravings.

    Hi Everyone, I am 51 and will be 52 in Nov. I have no physical complaints and am trying to do my best to lose the excess weight via Keto. It's been a great lifestyle change and reduces the looks of aging :) Not to mention the health benefits. I was hoping to meet others my age here. I use the app mostly but discovered MFP online today. Not quite sure how to tell when people reply yet but hopefully it will send a msg or something. :)

    Thank you Marilyn! I weighed myself on June 25. I don't have a scale so I have to stop by Weight Loss Center or Weight Watchers to use their scale. Turns out, I weigh less than I thought. I felt so fat! I had estimated the upper 120s but I weigh 121. (I am 5' 3 1/2" and age 61.) I am probably going to begin my diet this coming week. I am 36"-29"-34," thigh 19". I need to lose weight around the middle. I plan to lose probably somewhere between 5 and 10 lbs.

    AEDREANA good for you, key thing is to watch what you eat, remember or write it down in a book just for that purpose. I have a little pad that has all the days of the week, plus a shopping list space and a to do list space, found it at the dollar store. It is perfect for me to use, I am up at 3am so I can write my day's meal plan on it each day, thus when I do get here I can copy what I did for the week.

    I made a discovery this past week, one I am not to sure how to deal with. It seems my digestion is working fine, however I have a pinched intestine, it is due to the swelling I am constantly having from the muscle and disk problems of my back. So I must use an ice block in the morning and afternoon after work and somehow eat foods that are soft, and drink more water to help. Anyone with a similar condition please friend me. I will of course see the Doctor on this issue, but my decision will not be surgery or the use of drugs.

    HELLO SALLY, so nice not to have physical problems! I can say here you will find people of all kinds having a challenge or getting through their journeys with ease. It is great to be able to get some advice when your head is spinning and leaving you feeling defeated. At this stage in our lives we are not as much in control of our body's as we think we are. Hope you reach your goal to better your health!

    Good morning! Not sure what pinched intestine is, but I have learned over the past 30 years that high-fiber food gives me terrible intestinal cramping. The worst culprits: seeds (soft seeds in tomatoes/cucumbers don't cause problems), nuts, whole grains, beans,corn, peas, vegetable and fruit skins, fruit. I only consume those foods in small doses, always accompanied by a much larger quantity of REFINED starch with plenty of oil to buffer. Also, acidic food like lemon juice, tomato juice, vinegar, are very helpful to me so I make a point of getting enough acidic food. I do not know whether this info is applicable to a pinched intestine but I do know that fiber is very hard on intestines!

    AEDREANA, thanks that is close to what I am noticing. I am also told that carbohydrates need to be addressed, they are hard on the digestive system too.

    I will be 56 in August.
    Here is my story:
    Age 51 weighed 183 and felt terrible. I am 5'7. But no serious health issues.
    My Dr told me that losing weight after 50 was not impossible but VERY difficult.
    (I thought to myself...bull****)
    I started by cutting gluten out of my diet 95%. (Before it was a fad)
    Goodbye 10 lbs in a couple months.
    By age 55, I weighed 157. Yes, it took along time but that's ok.
    This is when MFP became very important to me, almost obsessed, lol.
    Huge changes. Mainly portion sizes. Got a food scale, weigh everything now.
    I currently weigh 145. Amazing ! About what I weighed in my early 40's !
    Goal weight 138. Hope to be there by October ?
    I exercise very little...golf, swim on occasion.
    I know at this point, this change in mind set about food, has become a lifelong habit with me.
    I absolutely hate how I feel when I eat something that does not work for me anymore....pizza, hollandaise sauce, more than 2oz of pasta, most restaurant meals, casino buffets NO ! I live in Southern Nevada.
    I have learned to "think" about each bite and enjoy. Instead of....just eating.

    Also 55 and suffering with tendon issues. Menopause has hit with a vengeance. Nobady told me that the weight is so hard to shift once you get into your 50s. If I had known, would I have had all that wine, or eaten all that bread and cake? I seem to go 1 step forward, 1 step back. I lose a bit and gain it back, then lose it again next week. I envy all those under 40s that tell me they just cut out sugar for a week, and get good results. Those were the days.. Doing what I can with tendonitis in both arms. It may take me until Xmas to lose the next 5 pounds, but I will get there. Add me as a friend. We all need the support.

    Hi, Well I haven't posted in these until tonight. I saw this one and couldn't pass it by! I am 56 and loving life. In my 40s my doctor put me on medication and didn't tell me that one of the side effects was weight gain (OCD eating disorders developed). So I was knocked off balance. I was a skinny child and lost my baby weight after each baby. This was my first experience at really being out of control and I got depressed. Then when the grandchildren came along. I got really happy again and realized that life was moving on and I needed to move with it. It is a lot harder now to lose the weight than when I was younger. I ran most of my 30s and lived out west so I was running at high altitudes and keeping the weight off didn't seem like much work. I was also raising my family and going to school and at one point doing that and working full time too! Then I moved to the south and besides the altitude change there was a change in food groups too! Everything and I mean everything is fried here. That was new to me too. Out west we had fried chicken on special occasions 4th of July and Events! Anyway I decided a couple of years ago I needed to do something and quick as I didn't want to continue to feel bad physically and keeping up with the grandchildren was important to me.

    Running and walking just wasn't doing much for me and I went out and bought a mountain bike and found a group that hosted beginner rides. Three years later I ride well and have lots of fun along with new friends. I think one of the secrets to long term exercise for me is to do what I love to do. If I hate it, it won't be long before I am dodging it. Later I bought a road bike and started road biking around town. My favorite is night riding and riding to the grocery store. I also made lots of new friends. The thing about having friends who see exercise as a way of life is they are supportive and happy people to be around. I bought new running/walking shoes this week and I may start adding some back into my life however it is record breaking hot here so that will come slowly. I am doing yoga and thinking of going to the Senior Center for Tai Chi. I want to add enough variety in so that I will stay motivated.

    I also have bought way more fresh fruits and veges and the more I cut out things (not all at once) the more I notice my pallet is becoming sharper. I ate a red plum yesterday and thought geez I don't remember these tasting so good. I believe it is important to eat things I like and I don't eat things I really don't like. I eat fish and in a pinch maybe turkey or chicken but very rarely. I cut out alcohol because I noticed it affected my performance when I use to run and it dehydrated me and it is a waste of calories. These days I am all about foods that are densely packed with nutrient. I don't count carbs, sugars or any of the others. I enjoy my food and love my life. Enjoyed reading the posts.     I ride both off road on trails and on road. I love it! I have my strava app which thru GPS tracks my time and my miles (duration) on any activity I am doing and it reports to MFP immediately when I am done. I love logging in and seeing that I have added 800+ to my daily points. Right now on the days that I have over 2000 points I have discovered that not eating all those and leaving around 1000 on my log knocks 2 pounds the next morning. I posted on my blog how I do this so I don't get hungry. I eat a good portion of my points in the AM and then again for lunch. I keep snacking foods like fruits and veges around for the evening. I try and cut it off early however if I am really hungry I go to the fridge and think a light spinach salad or something. I find I even sleep better this way as there isn't much on my stomach when I go to bed.

    64 here and wondering how I got to this age because I don't feel like it. Slow metabolism due to thyroid and have to fight for every pound I lose. Losing very slow and exercise seems to help the aches and pains somewhat. Friend me if you like. I'm on every day. Good luck!

    MaryKayKeller - I loved your posts! I was kind of depressed to see so many posts here about being 'old' and not being able to do things anymore. I realize some of us have health issues that limit activities but find something you like and can do and get moving! Don't change your diet drastically all at once and/or limit yourself to a 'diet' - look at portion control, change the way you prepare your favorite foods, and make changes slowly so you don't feel deprived. Make changes you can live with long term. As MaryKay said you will find your tastes changing over time.

    I am 58 years old, have lost 60 pounds in the last 3 years, started running which I used to hate and discovered I really, really like and started strength training and lifting weights which I love. I have thyroid disease, have arthritis, have a torn meniscus*, was on BP and cholesterol medications in addition to the thyroid meds I have been on most of my life. Now I am only on the thyroid medication but it is managed and stable. I didn't start out running 12 miles, or even a fast mile, or running at all. I started walking and then added a little running until I could run that mile then another and another and over time I have gotten faster and now I do run half marathons and do well in my age group. I didn't walk into the gym and start lifting 60-100+ pound weights - I started small and built up until I could and I love being strong. Same with diet... I made small changes over time, eating more frequently, eating breakfast everyday, measuring everything and watching portions. Most importantly I was consistent with my eating and my workouts over the course of the 3 years, sure there were ups and downs and plateaus but all in all I kept at it.

    I also realized there wasn't going to be an instantaneous huge result - it took a lifetime to get where I was and to change it was going to take time - be patient with yourself and celebrate the small accomplishments! Be proud of the changes you are making!

    *one comment on the health issues since losing weight and working out - I have strong supporting muscles and my knees no longer hurt from arthritis although my hands do. I did not have to have surgery on my knee for the torn meniscus(injury was not running related) the doctor just recommended more hip stretches and hip/glute strengthening and I was back to running within a short period. Losing weight, exercising and strengthening your muscles can make you feel better.

    My favorite quote 'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out & screaming hell yea what a ride!'

    60s going into 70s here. ;-) All my woes are treatable thank heavens. Dry mouth, silent reflux and a cataract. All at once. Just a PITA!

    I prefer to concentrate on my training to be a fitness instructor, specializing in working with seniors not as active as I am. :-)

    Getting old isn't for sissys. The older I get, the more it hurts, the harder it is to do and the noisier my body is when I try. But with age comes wisdom and I have found strength in wisdom. I know what to do, just lacking the kick in the butt sometimes to do it.

    I cannot go the path my dad did. He was overweight and suffered many medical issues. And he died far too young. Not me. I want to be fit and trim and confident in how I look. I want to be the best looking corpse in the casket, 30+ years from now. :-)

    Friends welcomed. Would love to hear your stories and keep up with like minded (and aged) friends.

    I guess I'm the baby here, being a youthful 53. I've lost 65 pounds since September, going from 240 down to 175. With it I lost most of my knee and foot pain as well. I still have to take my time getting started, and to watch out for the guys who like to show how strong they are when they shake your hand. {losing weight don't help arthritic hands} In the past I had minor high blood pressure and sugar issues, but had left that behind a few years ago with diet and exercise, even before I started losing.

    Now I'm lifting 2 days a week, as well as still doing a lot of cardio everyday. The changes in my body fat {22.3%} are very slow, but they are happening. I increase my barbell weights by 2 1/2 pounds every month. It is a challenge the first week of every month, but I want to keep pushing. The last couple of weeks after my lifting I have walked 1 1/4 mile to the river and swam for 30 minutes. I'm going to keep this up as long as it's warm enough. I will leave you with a view of my lap pool. 4 laps take 30 minutes.

    I love this strand. I am 57 with major weight to lose and I definitely notice my body not doing what it use to once upon a time.

    Age 71 guys!! Like many of you, life has happened including a major wreck and related problems over the years from that-arthritis, worn out bones etc. MFP has really made it possible to lose 15 lbs and keep it off for almost a year. Can now be more active and get a regular exercise program going. Keep up the good work-it pays off.
