Hello ladies, this one is mainly for us women. I know the depo shot seems to be a hot topic on these boards with gaining weight, this shot made me lose my appetite COMPLETELY, literally all i have been eating is rice cakes because I have no appetite. I contact my GYN about this and she seems a little confused as majority of the time women gain weight due to increase appetite. I got my shot two weeks ago and dropped ten pounds.. I love my body where it was at, and I wanted to become more muscular but im losing my muscle too. My fiance really doesn't want me looking like a skeleton by the end of these three months but I really don't see myself changing increasing appetite. I still eat, mainly because I don't wanna die of heart failure or mess up my kidneys, just less than 400 calories.
I have also been very active lately, I work 5 -8 hours retail, then i go for a mile and a half run/walk almost every day as well as lifting but again i am not getting my preferred calorie intake everyday as much as I try. I even resorted to drinking pop and eating lots of fruits in veggies(I am vegan I dont eat meat or by products) and I am still losing muscle and too much weight.
The reason why I am posting this is because I am a woman who doesnt want to lose her curves but want to tone up, I have a fear of looking too skinny and my mom already said I look too skinny (great). I had anorexia in high school so maybe that might have something to do with it? I just need some advice on where I can get my nutrients i need because my body just rejects everything I eat..
H E L P any advice would be great!
Ps . I am done with this shot after september I am NOT going back for a second shot.

Try nut butters. Add peanut butter or almond butter to your rice cakes. Add jelly with it too if you can. That will help boost the calorie content and get you some protein. Try adding protein drinks if you can. Even doing something as simple as adding a bit of powder to your coffee(if you drink it) will help boost your calories.0

I have been eating more fruits and veggies... still losing weight/muscle at a rapid rate.
my calories has increased but still doesnt matter i continue to lose muscle mass.0 -
That sounds delicious, i love nut butters I will def have to try that out. Thanks0

Increase intake of things besides fruit and veggies, which will not give you the calories you need. I second the post that suggested nut butters, protein powder and I'll add beans, which can have high calories. Try spreading peanut butter on your rice cakes and topping them with bananas or other fruit. It also might help to take a break from exercise, and just focus on getting your weight back up to where you feel comfortable.0

Do you get nauseated, or just don't feel like eating? If it's the former, see if you can get a prescription for Zofran or something similar. If it's the latter, eat anyway. Pasta, protein powder, candy bars. If I read your post correctly, you're currently eating less than 400 calories. Seriously, you have to eat.0

It sounds like you may need to see a new doctor. I would seek a second opinion. Maybe you could do protein shakes/smoothies until you get your appetite back.0

Thanks for all the suggestions! ill try the nut butter on my rice cakes!
I know 400 is too less but i would eat alot more if i could, this shot makes me feel full all the time.
I cant wait until its over in september0 -
My suggestion - get off of depo. It is a horrible form of birth control and the side effects are just insane. Go with a copper IUD. It lasts for at least 5 years...no hormones, no worries.0

Nut butter is a great start, but if you are having trouble losing too much weight, why are you eating rice cakes? Why not put it on bread? And why are you doing cardio? I understand wanting to maintain a certain fitness level, but if you can barely eat anything, maybe you should stop for awhile.
I noticed that you had an eating disorder in the past. Depo often leads to weight gain. Do you think a fear of weight gain may have been a trigger? I have never had an eating disorder, so hopefully this isn't an offensive or ignorant question. I was just wondering if a fear of gaining weight has lead to anxiety.
I do agree that maybe a chat with the doctor, or another doctor, might be in order.0 -

Smoothies sound like a great idea. It might be easier to get the calories in this way. Or possibly Ensure?0 -
Take it easy on the fruits and veggies for now, those are too heavy for your system. Eat more calorie dense and easy to digest foods, white bread with a lot of peanut butter and such.0

I USED to have an intense fear of gaining weight but I didnt mind being chubby before which i was. Im 5'1" I was 127 pounds about a month ago I loved my body but now im slipping back into my old habbits, in which I have no control of. I was fine with gaining a little weight on the depo since i was only gonna take it once but then my appetite decreased so much that all i am eating is a few hundred cals a day. Im going to start eating peanut butter and nut butters that have some fat to increase my weight back up to 120, im 103 right now, if i drop down into the 90s ill just continue to lose weight, as for the exercise, i dont want my heart to fail or be stationary, that is why I have been excersizing so much but i will cut back on it for a few weeks.
I am still continuing to lose muscle, and i still have a little bit a belly fat, not much but its there, it could be water retention. I hate this shot i really do, im not blaming it 100 percent on the shot but i know it decreased my appetite.0 -
Your question is defensive at all, I used to have a fear of gaining weight. I dont really care anymore but maybe I was wrong, not sure what is going on in my brain right now, im very stressed which may also play a roll. Im eating rice cakes because I live at home and my parents eat white bread, which I tend to stay away from, I dont like white bread to begin with and I am doing cardio to get my heart active and my blood flowing throughout my body, i feel like ill get a blood clot if i dont Ive been having some chest pains lately anyways but again that is probably due to stress I have about 11 weeks to go on this shot, things may turn around im just hoping this doesnt turn into a life changing event of becoming addicted to an eating disorder, which i refuse to admit i have...0

My thoughts and concerns exactly! If you can force yourself to eat rice cakes, then you can force yourself to eat higher calorie foods. Higher calorie doesn't necessarily mean unhealthy.0
