Massive Stumbling Block

Hi All,
I'm relatively new here and have been lurking around these forums for the last two weeks or so. I have been tracking my calories and hoping to lose around 25lbs to begin with.
I know the big amounts of weight tend to be lost first and I was happy to see that I had lost 8lbs in the first two weeks although I knew this was going to slow down big time at some point. Unfortunately, today I've realised my scales are incredibly unreliable! Different weights every time you step on them! I'm waiting for some new ones to arrive but I'm now feeling down thinking that the 'success' I was having was actually just a mechanical problem.
Anyone have any tips?

Just keep going. Then get a new set of scales or change the batteries. Don't give up. Its not just about the number on the scale0

Buy a tape measure!! Don't need batteries, you don't need a level floor, it fits in your pocket and usually will show more movement than the scale. THIS will keep you motivated, keep a chart of various different body parts, one week you may not lose anthing on your waist (or some other bit) but then you find out you've dropped an inch form your butt!! yay!0 -
I weigh in every Wednesday at 5pm or there about and I only rely on one accurate set of scales. Your body weight will fluctuate throughout the day. Weighing in at the same time will give you a more accurate mean average over time. I know the temptation of weighing yourself every time you see a set of sales or nip to the bathroom but it can be disheartening so try and avoid it. Good luck with the rest of your loss :-)0

I agree with the tape measure idea but do do both! I weigh and measure as I find my body does seem to swell and shrink in odd places at odd times. Have an item of clothing you can try on to make comparisons with how it used to fit and feel.
Get a spare set of batteries too and always weigh at the same time of the day, on a hard surface- naked!0 -
Thanks for all your advice!
I am only weighing once a week because I know there are a lot of factors that can affect the scale. Tape measure is a great idea though and I shall put more effort into doing that more regularly.
Can I ask how often you measure? I've heard it takes longer to see inches lost rather than pounds but I'm not sure on the accuracy of this?0 -

I so agree with this! I would add, don't weigh yourself in the morning at your "lowest weight." I feel that it's an inaccurate way of weighing, because you are only that weight for a short time during the day. I always weigh myself between lunch and dinner at the same time, and only about once a week. I did purchase a real scale (I was using my Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit to weigh), so sometimes I will weigh myself for the "fun" of it, but I only record my weight once a week on my weigh-in days.0 -

I measure, at most, once a month.0 -

I weigh once a week on a Wednesday morning and I measure once a month in the morning as well0
