    1 cup of egg whites

wont taste very good, but there's 26 g's of protein for 125 calories, just as good as any protein shake out there

Agree with the egg white idea. but, yer - pretty gross IMO. You could always disguise the taste of the egg by blending it with veg like spinach, carrots, cucumber, kale, etc. I've never tried it myself - just a suggestion...

Apart from egg whites there really isn't a shake that gives as much protein as a scoop of protein powder. Maybe just eat a can of tuna?

    All natual peanut butter.
    Here's what I do:
    1/2 over ripe banana
about 4 ice cubes if banana isn't frozen
handful of spinach (trust me you won't taste it)
    1 tablespoon peanut butter
1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla alomd milk
1 to 2 teaspoons hersheys special dark cocoa powder (found in the baking section)

Use a good blender that will turn it into a smoothie and you have a chocolate shake.

The recipe above sounds good, but even if you use a higher protein almond milk (like So Delicious brand), that's maybe 10g of protein. I wouldn't call it a protein shake.

OP, you could buy pre-made shakes. I get the Premiere Protein ones from Costco. 160 calories, 30g of protein, and they taste decent. A box of 30 is $23. I still use Optimum Nutrition powder for homemade shakes and other things, but the pre-made ones are what I use right after a workout.

Otherwise, I'd say just try to eat a lot of high-protein foods--lean meats, seafood, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, etc.

Thanks for the egg white idea! I started looking around and here's some smoothie recipes and all that's used is egg whites for protein. http://lifeisnoyoke.com/recipe-index/

What's the issue with protein powder?

You can get egg white protein powder also.d

Drinking a cup of egg whites is going to be pretty disgusting.

No real issue other than price and I'd like to see if I can make it work without it. :)

    2 cups of non-fat milk
a cup of ice (or more, depending on preference)
    2 Tb cocoa powder
stevia or other calorie-free sweetender to taste

blend, drink, enjoy. if you blend it right, the ice will thicken it up. if you overblend it will thin it too much, if you under blend it will have little ice chunks. if you're good with the sugar, you could add banana till it tastes right to you.

i also buy pure protein 35 gram protein shakes and break them into 2 servings, which makes them more economical and still 17 grams of protein per serving. trader joe's has them for just over $2 a can, so it works out pretty well.

the below is a shake, but it's not high in protein.
    All natual peanut butter.

When you break it down, cost per serving, it's probably the cheapest protein source out there especially if you buy in bulk.

I agree. Using a Costco bag of whey protein, I can make a 32g drink for like eighty cents.

Here's some other cheap sources, though the article is from 2008-

    Here's something you could try:

1/2 cup of dry curd cottage cheese (don't worry...if you don't like cottage cheese, you won't even know it there) 22 grams protein (110 calories)
1/4 cup of egg whites (pasteurized) 6 grams of protein (25 calories)
    10 almonds 3 gr of protein (70 cal's)
Stevia or something else that you prefer (0 calories)
    1/2 small frozen banana (45 cal's)
    1/4 of frozen berries/fruit (20 cal's)

    Blend up and enjoy

    Total Protein: 31 grams
    Total Calories: 200
