HELP.

Okay this may go into rant mode but just hear me out and possibly give me tips!

When I first started my exercise journey it was in May 2013 and I was 175. Highest I've ever been! (5'4 by the way)
I never liked going to the gym, I'm more of an in home fitness person (that and I don't know what the heck to do at a gym) so I started doing Jillian Michaels' DVDs and the C25K program. Great results! By only doing that I lost 27 pounds and am at my current weight of 147.

My ultimate goal is 135 and I want to get there by my birthday trip in August (20th to be exact.)

HOWEVER.

Since my brother's been living with me for the summer, my workout routine and everything has just been so completely out of wack. He's an athlete, he runs track for his school and I've been tagging along with him on his track workouts (run one mile, then mixture of arm/leg exercises and abs IN THE GYM!). He pushes me to use heavier weights, which I do, but I'm just feeling like I'm going to meet my goal. Plus my weight has gone up! Now this could be because of my TOM but I'm not sure...as of today my current weight is 153 and I'm freaking out.

I see so many people getting to their goal weight quickly and efficiently--not that they haven't had their struggles--but I just don't know what else to do. I'm eating as healthy as I can, I've cut down on the sweets a lot and drink tons of water...but I just feel like a mess. I haven't logged anything in the past couple of weeks and I'm just feeling like a failure and that I'll still be this big tub of lard by my birthday.

So....any tips, suggestions, support? A girl needs help!

There is an article by Richard Talens fitness called "Taming the Scale". Google it (I can't link it as the shortened version of Richard gets censored) and read it. I think it will help put things in prospective.

This is what I first reacted to. You have lost a lot of weight! Why would you feel like a failure? All that aside - it's pretty normal to reach somewhat of a plateau and there are a lot of reasons why that could happen. But, how long has this been? Have you noticed your weight started increasing after you changed up your fitness routine with your brother and increased the weights? How do your clothes fit? It could be that the number on the scale isn't what you want to see, but if your clothes are fitting better (or even staying the same), then let that reassure you that you are not doing anything wrong.

You're doing awesome! Have fun training with your brother. Oh - and happy early birthday!!

Edited to also say - don't give up!!!! Start logging again!! Do you really want to be back to where you started? You've worked hard to get where you are. Be proud of that and use it as motivation to get you to your goal!!

Body measurements and strength is a better measure of how you're doing than the scale. You might have gone from 'skinny fat' at 147 to 'super awesome' at 153.

Don't stop lifting or having fun, but do start keeping track of your food intake.

    Good luck!

I'm kind of having the exact same problem. I am already 20. I had been 147 before. I am now 152. I'd love to be down to 135 but as long as I look good, I'll be fine. I feel like I need some support/motivation. Seems like you do too. So maybe you should inbox! We seem to have similar goals so it'll be easier to do it together.

    OP,
First of all 12 pounds in 5-6 weeks with the small amount you have left to lose is aggressive and unlikely to be a successful venture. I bet that isn't what you want to hear, but, it's the truth.

Second, you mention what the scale says but nothing about measurements or body fat/lean mass percentages. Perhaps your focus is on the wrong set of numbers.

Third, a couple pound variance is normal. It could be that monthly cyclic thing ... or what you've eaten (especially dependent on sodium intake) ... or water retention due to change in exercise routines ... or any number of other things. I'll have over 6 pound variations within a day ... there's no way I add that much fat in such a short amount of time. It goes back to tracking more than just weight.

Thanks everyone! I really just needed someone else's point of view on things other than my own.

I know this will sound awful but I haven't been measuring my waist or muscles or anything but I know I've lost inches because I'm sagging in a size 8 when before I fit them perfectly. All this weight gain started after my brother moved in and got me on his track workouts.

I am going to get back on track starting next week which means going to the gym (by myself eek!) running more than usual and logging my food since I haven't in the past few weeks. Even if I don't meet my goal by my birthday, I at least want to see some weight loss and get back to my routine.

Thanks for that article! REALLY helped!
  • Everybody has their struggles, though not enough reward themselves with the energy to overcome those obstacles they fear..... Don't let your mind fool you into the "I can't" when you know you are capable and CAN!
Push through those struggles and remember it doesn't matter how long it takes -- as long as you get there.
