Eating every 3 Hours

eat even if you're not hungry0

I joined this facebook group for a 2 week challenge. The trainer that runs it says the one must eat every 3 hours. my 3 hour time to eat again is here and I'm just not hungry. He says that eating every 3 hours helps with metabolism. Thoughts? Fact or fiction? Trying it just for today just to see...
so the breakfast within an hour thing goes with this, too? Still experimenting what works for me, i've found that the sooner i eat breakfast the sooner i get hungry again, so i like to wait until an hour or 2 after i get to work. didn't seem to change anything from when i was eating within 30 minutes of waking, other than being easier to manage my cals. I love other people's perspective on the whole "breaking the fast" thing!0 -
I don't know the science behind it, but the reason I personally eat about every 3 hours is because if I don't this is what happens
1) Eat big meal
2) After 3 hours get ravenously hungry
3) Ravenous hunger makes me want to eat unhealthy things
So I really feel that this "grazing" type of thing seemingly helps peoples' weight loss because it makes them feel fuller for more time and then make healthier choices etc0 -

Yep, breakfast is the same. It works really well for some people to help control their mood and appetite and it makes others feel like they want to chew their own arm off. Again, as long as you're hitting your calorie and nutrition goals for the day and have no medical reason for breakfast then you should do what makes you feel best.0 -
It's not just a myth and how much you eat at a time does impact the way you feel and can also impact how much fat you store and burn. A lot of my success has come from managing the way I eat as well as building an overall healthy lifestyle. Good luck to you!0 -

The myth isn't the idea that meal timing cannot have an affect on your athletic performance or the way you feel or your ability to stick to a weight loss regime personally...the myth is that there is one "correct" way for everyone and that is the way you need to do it or you are failing in some way.
I'd encourage anyone to just experiment a bit with meal timing, play with it with regards to their day and their exercise routine, see what works for them.0 -

Not really.
The impact of meal frequency on adherence, energy and gym performance has a far, far greater benefit than any possible (and debatable) direct impact on weight loss.
How you feel is extremely individual.0 -

Are we talking about metabolism furnaces and fat in heeeeer?
Yesterday, I woke up at 6 am and didn't eat until 5pm because. ...busy.
I'm still alive.0 -
I eat something every 3 hrs or so ... so I don't get too hungry.. I made my meals smaller and in between I eat fruit, greek yogurt and more fruit. I have been doing this for most of the last 17 months as I lots 40 of the 50 I lost. It worked for me. I am not really sure it is a metabolism thing or just something that helps me from making bad choices once I get freakishly hungry.0

This would explain how I can walk through walls and why my neighbor never cares when I streak0 -
i have type 2 diabetes and eat small meals every 2 and a half hours because it keeps my blood sugar from spiking or dropping too suddenly. eating so frequently also helps me keep from binge eating because i'm always less than 2 and a half hours away from my next meal, and i only eat foods i really enjoy.
btw, bodybuilders often eat every 2 and a half hours to keep their protein and carb level up as they're constantly in a state of muscle recovery.0 -

The bodybuilder thing is based on outdated broscience - as in, it is not necessary.0 -

Obviously, for medical reasons and for sustainability there's a reason to have a timing to eating. For weight loss, maintenance, gain it is irrelevant.
Some bodybuilders practice intermittent fasting, too. Point? If you're getting your nutrient intake for the day and reaching your caloric goal for whatever your goals may be, eat when you feel is best0 -

meal time doesnt matter, fuel -calories does0

Not really calories in a day all the same carores out. I eat several times a day but it helps me personally feel better with blood sugar and smaller meals so less overeating. It is what works for you, it is common amond bodybuilding types but many still get excellent results eating on less meals. Fasting is the new go to, personally I would just eat more after a fast period and get a ****ty workout, but for some it works. All in preference! Listen to your body and how it responds0

Here is a good study.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23404961
CONCLUSION: We conclude that increasing meal frequency from three to six per day has no significant effect on 24-h fat oxidation, but may increase hunger and the desire to eat.0 -

I haven't done a great deal of personal research into this but your slideshow didn't prove anything. Anyone can make a slideshow, print it as pdf, and say whatever they say per bullet point. It's a bullet point of unsupported, uncited "facts." Link me some peer-reviewed, scientific journals that show that eating every 3 hours has a substantial benefit over every 4 hours, or every 5 hours. Heck, I find more peer-reviewed, scientific studies that support intermittent fasting than I do the 3- hour eating method.
It may work for some, but my opinion remains that it does more harm via stress than it does good.
Edit: TrailNurse is my hero and saved me 10 minutes of research into finding studies. :drinker:0 -
