Holiday weight gain - HELP!

Hi guys, I'm wondering if any of you can shed some light on what has just happened to me. I've lost 12 kilos over the past 9 weeks or so, and was going down steadily which was great - I've been exercising and eating healthily and not finding it too difficult. Last Thursday night I went away to Italy for 5 days, and while there I didn't go mad with food, although I did obviously eat pasta and one ice cream in those 5 days. Upon my return, I've weighed myself and I've gone up 8 kilos!!!! I do suffer very badly from water retention, and on the last 2 days my legs swelled up incredibly. However, I'm really upset about going up 8 kilos, and feel as if I have to start all over again! Has anyone else experienced the same thing? My friend reckons I should go to a doctor to get myself checked out, as it seems excessive. Could it be that most of it is water? I was expecting to go up, but not that much!

It is likely water retention. Although with the leg swelling it's probably not a bad idea to get it checked out. This can be a sign of other medical conditions. Myself, I get water retention with TOM, plus flying, any increase in salt, and extra physical activity. Do you have any medical conditions which may contribute? So many potential variables here. :flowerforyou:0

HIyah
I went to scotland for a few days and was very relaxed in my diet and exercise. I came back and gained 5pounds. The next week it was back to normal. So dont panic or do anything drastic just carry on as normal. I bet you will find its water weight. I go to Spain in a few months and expect the same to happen again, but you got to enjoy whilst on holiday otherwise whats the point. Good Luck.0 -

No I don't suffer from any other conditions apart from the water retention. I don't even know where to get it checked out, as where I live there are no GPs who are very sympathetic towards obesity and many have just shrugged me off saying that I need to go and lose weight...0 -
Congratulations on the weight loss so far. You're doing great!!
To have have put 8kg of fat whilst on a 5 day holiday you'd have had to eaten a hell of a lot of pasta and an ice cream the size of Rome!
So something else is going on - probably water. Believe me I feel your pain, I'm starting to realise how much water my body wants to hold on to.
Just take a deep breath and get back to doing what you were before your holiday. Try upping your water intake for a bit and limiting the amount of salt in your diet, you'll soon find you're back where the scales told you were before.0 -
You'll drop it fast. I was up 2 pounds this week from a weekend of parties and by yesterday it was gone again.0

What MB said. I'm generally up over 2lbs from Friday into Mondays.0

I wouldn't sweat it, my weight has stayed the same since last Thursday due to Holiday shenanigans and massive water retention. Just cut your sodium for a few days to a reasonable level and keep up the hard work. Weight loss is not linear, it is chaotic as your body responds differently to different foods, activity levels, stress, atmospheric conditions, the color of your couch cushions, what kind of under wear you wear, you get the picture. I weight myself daily but only worry about the bi or tri weekly averages, it gives you a better perspective as to how your body is responding to your macros. I know it is mentally exhausting to look at the scale some times, I went from 202 to 211 over the weekend, but I know damn well, I didnt consume 31,500 surplus calories, now I am back down around 203 but look leaner than I did at 202.0

If you are already prone toward water retention then that is most likely the case. I do agree that 8kg of water is a bit much, but there are so many factors at play here which could contribute to it. Perhaps try drinking a few extra glasses of water and watch it over the next few days. It will likely drop off as your routine gets back to normal.
Italy is beautiful. Where were you?0 -
OK!! First of all 12 kilos in 9 weeks is a lot - 3lbs a week in 'old money'... So congratulations on that!!
Secondly, maybe you weren't as accurate as you thought on what you ate whilst away which is normal, it is very difficult to guesstimate calories when you aren't cooking or they don't come written on the packaging.
Thirdly - I can put on 7lbs in a weekend, but most of it is water and sodium related and usually goes back to normal after 5 days back on the regime.
Even if half your gain is 'real' 4 kilos, you have still lost 8 kilos in 9 weeks which is the recommended 2lbs a week so give it time, drink plenty of water and see where your weight is 7 days after you get back!! Sure you will be pleasantly surprised.0
