Hip Bursitis

So I've been dealing with Hip Bursistis. Ironically I got it from sitting on concrete waiting for the fireworks on the 4th of July and not from all the crazy workouts etc that I do. They put me on prednisone for 6 days and now I can walk around without any pain and I have my full range of motion back again. Yesterday I was laying by the pool and when i got up my hip felt almost like it was full of fluid. It didn't hurt at all, just felt funny and I limped around for a few minutes. Then everything went away and I could move normally again. The doctor wasn't very helpful when I went to see him. all he said was that it would take about a week for the symptoms to go away (which the pain and restricted motion did). I've been looking online for information on how long I should wait until I start running again... haven't found much information about it.

Has anyone delt with Hip Bursistis before? How long did it take until you could get back into your normal workout routine? I've been swimming and training my upperbody, but haven't gone running, weight lifting (lower body) or done any stair workouts yet. I want to make sure that I have given it time to heal and such, but I'm also ansy to get back to my training since I have a race coming up soon. I'm scared that it'll flare up again.

    I had knee Bursitis before.

If you feel the pain from the inflammation stop. You are prolonging recovery.

If you are having a good day do what the doctor recommends as well as really warm-up the muscles so they're ready to do the work.

Avoid heavy loads on the area. I had to avoid lunges with my left knee for over 3 months.

Do what you can do; listen to your body; stop if you feel pain.

No pain=No Gain motto should go out the window when you have bursitis.

I also know that this is changing but take anti inflammation (if prescribed or recommended by the doctor) and I ice after my workouts as well.

I got it shortly after giving birth in February and it only lasted about 6 weeks. I looked up exercises to help heal it and worked from there. It's been about 4 months since I saw the doc about it and it's fine now. Her suggestion was to look up specific exercises... actually, I just looked in my downloads and I still have the info I downloaded. Shoot me a friend request and I'll send it along!

Thanks for the info!! The hardest part for me is that the way I got it didn't come from overuse or anything so I'm not sure what to avoid and not to avoid. Right now I don't have any pain with movement. It's so frustrating because I'm a personal trainer and a massage therapist so i need to be able to move. I was supposed to do the Spartan Beast in september, but i won't be able to train enough to be able to do it this year. I'm going to transfer to a later race so I don't lose out completely.

I'm scared to try more exercises with it so i've been trying to ease back into my routine. I have to teach Spinning tomorrow so hopefully the seat won't irritate it all over again.

I had it last year, doc sent me to physical therapy and that resolved it after maybe 8-10 weeks, 2 visits per. It included massage and hot and cold treatments, which were important for me because my muscles were so tight from overcompensating for the hip for a while. It also included a bunch of bodyweight exercises focusing on my core and homework of daily stretches. I have not had a problem since. For me, it was suspected that I got the bursitis from having a c-section and becoming accustomed to not using my core at all due to anxiety and sedentary lifestyle. Now I am a lot more in shape and not having bursitis again keeps me motivated! Good luck!
