My mom lost around 60 pounds thanks to hypnotherapy after years of trying to exercise and diet. Worked great for her because it got to her root depression issues and was handled by a responsible therapist. I tried it at 16 with a therapist I didn't trust who thought my self harm issues stemmed from weight issues (and I was not overweight). Didn't help me a bit.

I don't buy it. I think it's likely that it's just placebo. You believe that it'll work, so it does.

But in the case of hypnotherapy, how is placebo different to real results?

Like I said,my husband gave up smoking with hypnotherapy - if it was just a placebo getting him to believe it would work - how does that alter the result?
It's not the same as a placebo of a physical medication - if placebo hypnotherapy works then it is just as value for money as real hypnotherapy, in that it achieves the result you wanted.

No difference in results I suppose, I'd just rather not pay for the privilege.

I haven't used it for weight loss either, and I guess using it to give up smoking is bit different - but he tried umpteen times to give up himself before that and failed.
The $50 ( at 20 years ago's prices) paid for itself within a month. Paying for the privilege was absolutely money well spent.

That's from a purely financial perspective - obviously innumerable health benefits as well

This. Doesn't matter whether it was the alleged suggestive powers of hypnosis, or the placebo effect, the end result was 50 bucks for 22 years of freedom, thousands of dollars saved, and possibly his very life spared.

That's one of the best damn investments I've ever seen.

Yes, I think it is fair to say that is the best $50 he has ever spent.

I appreciate that hypnotherapy is not for everyone ( it's not for me either) and if you have enough self control to change your habits on your own it is completely unnecessary for you.

But don't dismiss it's usefulness for some people - if you want to change and are having difficulty doing so, it can be a tool to help you.
