Vacation Weight Gain

Hi! I went on vacation for a week and I came back and gained 5 lbs. YES! Five whole pounds. I am so disappointed and upset. I ate probably 4000 calories per day, making my maintenance 1600 calories. Therefore, I ate 2400 over each day. Did I really gain 5 lbs. of fat?
I am so discouraged and I don't know how to get a new mindset. Any advice would be great!!
Thanks!

  • i had a similar situation.
gained just over 4 lbs last year while celebrating our anniversary in cancun.
all inclusive. but it was great quality food. so there wasn't much bloating really.
i felt gross though, it was more mental that physical.

however i was very strict when i came back and didn't let it put me down. after 3 weeks i was pretty much the same to when
    i left before our trip.

i did cut out my dairy and sugars for one whole week. i added an extra cardio day(20min)

Five pounds in the whole scheme of things is really no big deal unless you are now going to let it defeat you. If you get yourself right back on track then you'll bounce right back.

Did you enjoy your vacation? Did you make some good memories with loved ones? I bet your answer is yes, so don't let the scale/guilt/shame rob you of that great memory.

When you go on a trip you are often eating differently than you normally do and that also increases the likelihood of water retention. Just give yourself some time back in your normal routine, get back to your normal exercise and eating habits and then after a few weeks you can reevaluate.

There is no perfection here. Real life happens! Do you want to miss living a real life because you have to be on a diet? Being successful in real life is managing a healthy lifestyle while adjusting with the ebbs and flows. We can't control everything and make it perfect, but we can balance and be at peace knowing that in the moment we did our best with what we have.

Last Fall my first grandbaby was born. My daughter had a C-section and needed help for the first couple weeks. I was away from my home, my food, my gym and staying in a two bedroom apartment with no where to workout. I took some DVD's and did one of those when I could, working around a sleeping baby/mom. I made the healthiest choices I could but with the sleep shortages those treats were very hard to resist. When I came home it looked like I gained 10 lbs, but when the dust settled it was really only 5. I just got back to work and it did come off.

Yours will too! Go workout, eat right and tell yourself what a good job you did today and leave what happened yesterday in the past where it belongs and only take the lessons with you into the future.

Last year I went on a 7 day cruise and ate my way through it. Of course I gained weight but when I got home I hopped right back on the wagon and lost it all within two weeks.

I have a vacation planned - I'm hoping to not gain more than 10-20.... I'd be thrilled with only 5.

Drink some extra water - if you were indulging a bit a lot of that is probably water weight. Grab a glass of water - jump back on track, don't use it as an excuse to keep eating bad and not working out and you'll be fine. Those 5lbs will drop off in no time.

I've heard similar from a few friends over the Fourth. I was up 10 lbs from my last weigh in and a solid 6 over the long weekend. I agree with others. Up the water (some of it's probably just water weight) and try to kick up the workouts a bit if you can. Don't let it derail you. Hopefully you can get back to routine now. Good luck!
  • i am wondering how y'all are with the consumption of supplements or fat burners in addition to a diet and before cardio?
i don't want to advertise or say the wrong thing but i can speak for myself with reasonably good results.

i've used them on and off and i want just wanted to throw it out there, to be it's no taboo.
  • I am so discouraged... These five pounds will not budge and I just don't know what to do...

Are you back to eating at a deficit? Are you weighing and/or measuring all of your foods to ensure accuracy for your calorie goal? Have you had enough water over the last few days to try to rid your body of water weight from excess sodium / have you eaten high sodium foods over the last few days since you've been back?

Don't be discouraged. +/- 5lbs will not ultimately make or break your weight loss success. I still suspect that at least some of it is water retention.
  • honestly, with a caloric deficit that "willrun4bagel" talked about AND the weighing of food is SUPER successful. i don't consume the same amount of water however i did add hydroxycut to it. (got it at walmart) (hope it's ok to mention, i wanted to test the waters in an earlier post) i just wanted to be straight forward with it.
i have a tendency to add supplements to my regime and sometimes i get more out of it, sometimes less.

i just really think you shouldn't be discouraged overall, since i have a strong idea that it might be water weight for 50% of it. however on overall weight loss i do recommend the supplement, in combination with a clean diet.

    those are my 2 cents

This is a calorie counting website, and how do you expect to be accurate without weighing your food? It's not as stressful as you make it out to be and can take a little over ten minutes out of your day. It's certainly a better option than putting useless diet pills into your body.

I ate and drank my way through a 5 day trip and came back 6 lbs heavier. The first 2 lbs came off right away (water weight) but the rest (4 lbs) was absolutely fat.

This has happened to be before and now I try to do all I can to avoid it.

When we were on a cruise last year, we knew we were going to be overeating, so we started every day with a workout in the gym, even if it was just walking on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes before we started our day, we felt so much more refreshed and ready to have a great day. I think we just ended up gaining a pound or two, and that was probably just water from traveling.

I did go a little crazy one day with a wine tasting followed by a martini tasting, BAD IDEA :drinker: :blushing:
