WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH A DIETICIAN?

My doctor called me and scheduled my first appointment with a dietician. I'm excited but I don't know what to expect. Has anyone sat down with a dietician? If so, what's it like?

My experience was good. He actually is the one who set me up on this site. I saw him regularly for over a year and I learned a lot. My advice, be honest. The more they know about you, your eating and exercise habits the better they can help you. Also, don't take everything they say as 100%, do your own research on nutrition as well.

I was disappointed in mine. In all honesty, she didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. She also didn't help me setting up a nutrition plan. She only went over which foods were better options and portion sizes. That was about it. Completely disappointed.

My experience has been grreat and probably the only reason why I've done so well using MFP. I used MFP in 2011 but had ZERO success on my own (eating 1200 cals, or course... )

Since August 2013: She told me how many calories and macros to eat using MFP and I thought she was nuts for saying 1500 calories! BUT, well, it worked! I'm still trying to lose more but am very happy with my success and where I am. She has been very encouraging and my "little cheerleader" in good times and bad! She always asks how things are going in my personal life as well (which I LIKE!) and I look forward to seeing her each month. (I started seeing her every 1-2 weeks for the first few months and my insurance covers my visits.)

She started me out on a very simple plan (balanced diet) and incorporated foods I really liked to get me started. I have since taken liberties I probably shouldn't, LOL, but it works. She also keeps tabs on my exercise habits, etc.

Mine was and is fantastic. She works with my schedule, likes dislikes and has a good understanding of how to make changes but not be dependent on sclaes and knowng exact calories and ingredients. We have not gone to far into Macros but she has increased my protein from what MFP say do to my activity level.
Some are however bad and want to use a lot of suplements and their own ideas of what is good or bad for you and what foods they lke not necessarily your likes.
Key is to be honest on likes etc

Thanks everyone! That was very helpful. I'm meeting with her every2 weeks since insurance covers it. She is not much older than me but gave me resources to get started, listened to the stress factors in my life and asked good questions. My first follow up visit is Thursday. So far I'm down 3.2lbs!
