Rant about exercise

Sigh. So this afternoon after my daily walk I decided to bike vigorously for a few minutes. 10 minutes to be exact. It wasn't much effort as my legs were already nice and warmed up from walking. (I walked 4.5km or 2.79miles)

Then a short while after my lungs started getting all wheezy. I have asthma and have been advised to not do vigorous cardio. But I wish I could do something other than walking. I wish I could jog, or bike. Or run! Or do jump rope.

Its been 2 hours.... 2 hours!! And my lungs are STILL wheezing. :indifferent:

Have you used your rescue inhaler? Also, maybe talk to your doctor about your controller medication. Many people with asthma can exercise if their medication regimen keeps their symptoms under control. Maybe bike moderately instead of vigorously?

i have asthma. i take a pill every day, and i'm fine. you build up your lungs just like you do any other part of your body: little by little.
  • Do you have a pool nearby where you could swim? If you like dancing there are a lot of dance workout videos on YouTube that you can do at home. I also like to rollerblade on nice days.

I also take a pil everyday. And I don't use my inhaler often, because I've actually been told not to do vigorous cardio. My inhaler isn't really meant for when I do exercise but when I breathe in bad air. Like smoke or such. And unfortunately I don't know how to swim...:blushing: okay I do, but I sink like a rock.

The dancing sounds fun, I suck at that too, but I suppose if I did it in my house nobody would know

And rollerblading....I'd break my neck as I am terrible at balance.

I can actually bike, but it has to be slowly, nothing to intense. Which is what sucks because it just doesn't burn enough. I actually also tried to do c25k (with inhaler) and ended up almost passing out. :indifferent:

    ETA: I can walk 8km a day, but I can't jog 5????? That's just....sad.

Slow and steady conditioning of the lungs. And ask your doctor in you could use your inhaler as a pre-workout action. I have exercise induced asthma myself. I used to take 2 puffs of albuterol (sp?) 15 mins before working out. Over the last 7 months I've conditioned myself to not need it.

Besides that, my suggestion would be to not think about the fact that you're running. Turns out that thinking about the exercise and the fact that you have asthma can induce an attack in some people (like me! part asthma attack/part panic attack)

I would think if you were biking at an easy pace you could do it without having your asthma be too bad. I had asthma for years and would need a couple of puffs to clear my lungs. And I was told to use it whenever I needed it. I guess I had not though about but I rarely need it now and I do bike lots.
