weight loss but fat percentage gain

Since, I've started calorie counting again, I've lost around 20 pounds in 107 days - so not hugely fast or anything, but my body fat has increased quite a lot. I started around 51% and now I'm almost 55%, i've lost 4 inches of my waist, and 4 off my hips. I was using the Katch McArdle Method to calculate my BMR which was 1800, now I've recalculated it and it's 1400!!! Which explains why my weight loss stopped for weeks - in the end I added 1 fast day in a week (600 calories) and it's helped a lot, but I assume I am losing muscle - how can I stop this? I can't do much exercise due to my current state of lupus and I really don't want to lose any more muscle. Any help? :)

thanks

How are you measuring your body fat?

I use my measurements and an online calculator, I also have scales which calculate body fat, and they are pretty similar, give or take a percentage.

How much protein are you eating per day?

Are you able to do squats, lunges and planks (like, they're push-ups where you don't actually move, just hold the pose)?

probably not enough protein and too many carbs if I'm honest. for example last week my total protein intake was 302g, mfp says I need 596 and that's about average throughout. I don't think I could manage lunges...maybe on good days, but I'd suffer for it with my knees, pelvis, hips etc. I can do some light squats, and probably wouldn't have the strength to do a plank right now. I do try to lift light hand weights and walk when I can. On good days I can do SO much more.

Planks are something you can start with just doing 20 orc30 seconds at a time.

Try to eat more protein, if you can. I think it'll help preserve the muscles you have.

I think I'll definitely try that. thanks. And I'll try to do a plank and maybe some squats. I'm starting new meds soon, I might even get some more good days :)

Scales are pretty inaccurate and can't generally tell the difference between fluid and fat. Measurements can be difficult, particularly if you're doing them yourself as it is difficult to measure exactly the same every time. Personally, I have a difficult time believing you've last weight and inches but have increased BF%. I'm sure you've lost some muscle, as that is normal, even if you are taking in plenty of protein and doing resistance work...you will lose a greater ratio of muscle in the absence of those things, but I have a tough time believing that you would put on 4% points in BF for 20 Lbs lost.
