Joe, welcome to MN! Easiest way I can explain weight loss is this: to lose one pound, you'll need a caloric deficit of 3500 calories. Losing 1/lb a week would mean that you simply have to cut out 500 calories a day. To figure out your caloric needs, go to http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and punch in your info. This will give you a pretty good idea of what you would need to eat to maintain your weight, then just subtract 500 calories a day.
The one bit of advice I would give would be to track everything. If you cheat or lie, you're only lying to yourself. Set an honest goal and work hard at it! You'll find that moving more will accelerate your weight loss journey quite a bit, so try walking or some workout dvds to get started.
Best of luck to you! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask :-)0 -

Got my numbers according to them I need to eat 2100 - 2600 to lose weight. Now my next question is does it matter what you eat. Because I've been eating a lot more fruits and veggies and no white stuff like bread or rice I quit sweets and pop also and of course started exercising0
