Are Bananas Bad for You?
Replies

anything is bad for you if you overdo it - I probably have at least a banana a day - use it in my protein shakes or a snack before a workout. I haven't had any negative effects0

Yes and no. do you go over your sugar for the day? then if so yes.
If you are looking to get super slim any added sugar can be bad but in most peoples situations it's just fine.0 -
Yeah, and uh, what's the recommended daily allowance for sugar? That's right, ZERO.0

a thread from April 2011; thanks for all the benefits and a strong 2nd post.0

Bananas are just creepy:

Plain and simple...are Bananas bad for you? Every time I pick up a banana for a snack someone seems to be yelling at me "that is going right to belly fat" true or false....
Absurd...
Yes this does seem very bizarre - I eat a banana as part of my lunch nearly every day - I often take my lunch box and eat in food court of the large shopping centre where I work - despite eating so many bananas in public, nobody has ever yelled anything to me about them at all :laugh:0 -
They're not "bad" for you - they're just not the best choice most of the time.
Bananas have a high glycemic index after they ripen, which means that unless you're eating green bananas, they affect your blood sugar levels similar to when you eat white bread or sugar.
While most fruits like apples contain fructose and glucose, ripe bananas contain an extra kind of sugar: sucrose, which is basically akin to table sugar. That third type of sugar is why they affect blood sugar the way they do, and why a lot of people say don't eat them.
If you have one occasionally, it probably won't throw off your diet. Bananas have a lot of nutrients and benefits. But if you're trying to lose weight, I wouldn't make that your fruit of choice.
A ripe banana, for this very reason, is a great choice for a carb prior to a high intensity workout. I eat one every single day before Crossfit.0 -
Is this a joke question?
Do people SERIOUSLY think bananas are bad for you?
wait...is this because of that stupid ad along the side of the screen sometimes that shows the browning banana...?

They are so bad for you ... my daily intake of 1-2 has caused me to lose over 80 lbs this year.0

My brother saw that ad, and started telling me the site I use says banana's are bad... (he's older btw) I said no that's just a stupid ad.
He likes to jump on diet band wagons. I'm trying to teach him there aren't any shortcuts, fat are good, carbs aren't evil, and meal timing is for energy distribution, not weight loss.0 -
If bananas are wrong then I don't want to be right0

Contrary to what a lot of people are saying on here bananas are low GI and are a slow released carb. Which makes them great for people with blood sugar problems since eating them won't spike your BS yes they are high in sugars and fats but they are healthy sugars and unsaturated fats... also a banana has 25% of your daily vitamin b6, as well as 16% manganese, 13% vitamin C, 12% potassium and fiber, and 10% of your copper and biotin... not too mention they have a decent amount of protein and are low in saturated fats... and eating a banana a day day can significantly lower your chances of stroke since the 400+ mg of potassium help fight against high blood pressure. Also their high fiber makes then great for gastrointestinal regulation, with many studies leading to results in healthier colons.
Short answer is Yes Bananas are Extremely healthy for pretty much all people dang near regardless of your lifestyle, health, or dietary conditions.0 -
Also contrary to popular belief a yellow banana is not a ripened banana... it is just how we as a people prefer to eat them raw... but as any culinary professional, dietary nutritionist, or baker will tell you... a ripe banana is a browned banana. This is why you do not cook with bananas that are yellow. Because the sugars have not matured. And that is when their sugar contents are questionable.0

If bananas are bad for you then I am in trouble! Love that as a snack bc it curbs my appetite!0

I personally feel that fruit should be looked at as a dessert. Not something you have everyday, unless you eat dessert everyday.
Me, I eat fruit a couple of times per week. Our diets should be vegetable, protein and fat based. Grains, dairy and fruit should be infrequent additions for optimal health........
I eat about a quarter or a third of a banana to help with leg cramps. I get leg cramps often due to my low sodium intake in my diet because I consume little or no processed foods and naturally most raw foods are lower in sodium..........0 -

I was screwing around with a friend once, smashed a banana into his face. Accidently broke his nose.
So in case, a banana was bad for him.0 -

That must have been a really green banana0 -

what?!?!? how does that even make sense?
Too much sugar can hinder weight loss, and also if you are trying to cut out the last little bit and hit a really low bf%, thats how.
I eat bananas. 7.44% apparently.0 -
OP, are you not aware that bananas are high in calories? Are you even counting calories? If people are warning you about snacking on bananas. they are telling you that you are fat and should lose weight. Yes you can get fat on friut and/or vegetables. It is all about the calories.0

This thread is very old and OP has long ago de activated.
However - of course you can get fat on fruit and veggies - you can get fat on excess of almost anything (although I somehow doubt excess of bananas is the problem all that often).
That doesn't make bananas bad for you though - or even difficult to fit into a calorie controlled diet.0 -

Bananas are A OK!0 -

I think you mean if you go over your calories for the day... going over sugar is not an issue if you are still in a negative energy balance...0 -

Yeah, we had just gotten it from trader joes.
He didn't appreciate the ball tap after getting it set at the hospital either.
Just can't win sometimes.0 -
Yes, all fruit is the devil.
All that sugar is terrible for people with diabetes. This is why they became diabetic in the first place, they were sneaking those bananas and dates and apples in all too frequently. This is also why the obesity epidemic is at an all-time high. When you go to McDonald's, all you see are people stuffing their faces with fruit.
Seriously, guys? Lmao. One food group doesn't magically make you fat. Excess calories being stuffed down your gob makes you fat.0 -
I have bananas almost every day, especially before a workout or as a quick energy boost during sports.0
