I hired a personal trainer but am sure what to expect. What all does your PT do for you?

Demonstrates, teaches, breaks down each movement to the basic components, modifies if necessary.

    Listens. Actually gives a damn.

    Holds me accountable.

First meeting he took measurements, got a quick history of injuries, asked what I do for work, asked about my current fitness level, and ran me through a bunch of basic exercises to see if I had anything wrong with movement patterns.

After that we set some goals for my sessions and talked about my calorie/macro goals.

My sessions usually consisted of a warm up, mobility work, and lifting (correcting my form and encouraging me to work harder).
  • First time I saw a PT we did a fitness test and talked about my past experiences and future goals. A few days later I got a copy of an exercise program and we had a session teaching me proper form on the movements.

Since then, I have been seeing him every two weeks or so - he follows my workout, adjusts my form, modifies the weight, answers my questions, tells me to keep pushing and keeps me accountable. It's been great.

She plans the workouts (obviously) and then tells me what to do, corrects my form as needed, spots me if I'm struggling with the weights I'm lifting and times intervals. I love that I don't have to think about what I'm going to do (for at least one workout a week). She is very encouraging and keeps me motivated. She is also willing to help out with nutrition tips. Each week we do something a bit different so I don't get bored.

We also discuss what I want to work on so she can tailor the workouts accordingly. Make sure you have an idea of what you want to achieve (be it fitness or weight goals) so your PT will know what kind of workouts to do with you.

ETA: First time working with her was similar to above posts: took measurements, asked questions, ran me through a basic fitness test to determine what level I was at
