I think my favorite part of this is the fact that the NFL issued a 16-game suspension to Cleveland Browns Josh Gordon, who tested positive for weed. Ergo, we can safely conclude that the NFL thinks pot is 8 times worse than punching a woman.

THIS! I just don't understand how this is ok!

I get that the league has set guidelines for how to handle drug use but what I don't get is if there are no set guidelines for domestic abuse and Roger Goddell has some subjectivity on this matter, then why wouldn't he make the punishment for Rice worse? If it's not covered under the CBA then he should use common sense and apply it here.

All I know is that these people are overpaid, over-admired, and over-valued for the most part. There are great athletes that are worth our admiration but for the most part I think it's a bunch fo crap. And I actually LIKE sports. These are people that are looked up to. Admired. Kids aspire to be them. Then these people go around and do some crap things.

Dang I'm hangry today or something...

I disagree that they are overpaid.

You are worth what someone is willing to pay you, so it is hard to say they are overpaid

That being said, their vallue to me... is still considerably less than what they are getting paid for. So yes, I will stick to the being overpaid. IN MY OPINION.

Just curious, but why do you think their pay exceeds their value? If you were one of the best people on the planet at what you do and were a large part of a multi billion dollar company, how much do you think your value would be?

When there are people out there actually putting their life at risk to keep us safe and making an average salary of $45, 000 dollars I think it is ridiculous that people are paid $1.9 million (average) for playing a game, that they generally enjoy and would do in their free time anyway. Mind you there is some danger in it but they also have top of the line medical. That being said, I don't think any athletes should be paid $1 mil or more. Ever. I'm sorry but I don't. I understand that they bring in revenue and people are shilling out ridiculous amounts of money to these legues and associations to see them play but i have always believed that there should be a salary cap. I'm an idealist though and think there are people out there worth a lot more than they ever get paid or doing better work.

Now, I do realize that they all choose to go down these career paths and accept the pay. I also realize that this is how capitalism works. I understand all of that and how it works but that doesn't mean that I have to accept that these peopel should be worth that much. In my eyes they are not worth that much and I place much more worth in other people.

*shrugs* You don't have to agree and we can argue this all day but that's my stand point.

Sounds like you are a socialist.

The reason that people who do those jobs only make 45k is because there skill set is not unique and you can find anyone off the streets to do that job.

NFL players have a unique skill set and are the best in the world at what they do, and are extremely difficult to replace.

If you choose to live in a society where the free market doesn't determine your worth, then we will just agree to disagree.

Nope sorry I live in Maryland and love the Ravens but screw Ray Rice he should have gotten thrown off the team altogether.

*kitten* like this is why men who idol these players think it's okay to abuse women, because all anyone ever gets is a slap on the wrist.

Who thinks it's ok to abuse women? By the way, the abuse goes both ways, so don't act like women are the only victims in domestic violence cases.

Well she was arrested and charged as well during the incident, so perhaps she shares the blame?

Because their union signed a contract where this was a rule. There is no hard rule for smacking a ***** up. Or being a owner passed out with drugs and a sack of cash in his car.

I like when Capitalist nations don't understand why sports earn so much money than someone who saves a life.

Because anyone can save a life. Not anyone can play in the NFL, supply and demand.

Also, people are lining up to pay big $$$ to watch these athletes perform. No one pays to watch and EMT perform CPR and save a life.

There are roughly 2080 NFL players in a 14 billion dollar industry. How many firefighters/cops are there across the country?
