Hi Everyone,
I have come to a breaking point. I have repeatedly started over with my healthy eating lifestyle over and over again for about 2 years, but the past 4 months I have repeatedly been unable to go more than 2 weeks eating clean or just generally eating healthy. I have considered taking appetite depressants, ive meal prepped, counted calories, not counted calories, tried clean eating, I have even gone to crossfit to get my motivation back and realized that I still enjoy working out, but eating right has become my down fall. If anyone knows anything that may help please share! I am currently at a loss as to why I cant stop eating junk that ive learned is terrible for me.

My advice (and I appreciate while it works for me and others it may not work for everyone) is to not demonise food. You can eat everything, you just have to eat better portions. So me today - I've had 2 triangles of tolberone, 1 small bag of harbio starmix, and tonight I'll be having a small chunk of cheesecake (well according to my FB it is USA national cheesecake day - so what if I'm not American). I'm not worried about it, it all fits within my calories, and tomorrow I'll do the same if it fits.0 -

I can say this because I am going through the same thing right now. Luckily I have averaged more good than bad so I am seeing a downward trend again, but still having issues with staying on task for longer than a few week.
Bottom line, it is all in our heads. We need to fix our brains. Some people will start talking about hormones and addictions, but it ultimately comes down to being mentally prepared. We need to have focus and clarity of purpose.
Thats it, I am done :drinker:
ETA: I just noticed you only have a few pounds to lose. So, to add to my previous statement you may have more luck just focusing on fitness and eating at maintenance without eating back exercise calories. It will gradually come off on its own as you build more muscle and become even more fit.0 -
Who buys the food? Start there. Is that you? Good. First stop looking at food as good/bad. Its just food. If it fits in your calorie budget for the day at a *reasonable* serving size, by all means enjoy. If not, put it away for another day. If there's something you like that you know you have a hard time eating in moderation(that is only two oreos which is a serving size instead of say, 6 or more) then maybe either buy ONLY single serving packs (if available) for those foods, or until you have established more self control don't buy it at all.0

Find any foods that make you hungrier rather than less hungry after you eat them and eliminate them. Even if they're supposedly healthy foods. If they screw with your appetite and you need to lose weight, they aren't working for you. Instead find healthy foods that fill you up without putting you over a sensible calorie deficit.0

I lost a ton of weight 2 years ago, and since then I've kind of been on the process you are. I eat clean a few weeks, then I basically proceed to still eat all my clean foods, but also ice cream, timbits, half a pizza, etc.
For me, I find it happens when I'm being overly restrictive. Look at your diet and the type/amount of calories you're taking in. You can still have things that are traditionally bad for you; I still love ice cream even though it's loaded with calories, so I have small servings periodically. I also tend to make "treats" that I know will taste good and give me that satisfaction of eating something bad for me, without as much of that fat/sugar (something like these zucchini muffins: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/kathies-zucchini-muffins-10000001898573/)
The point is, you'll never be able to eat perfectly every day without being 100% dedicated to your weight loss, and let's be realistic, we've all got a lot going on in our lives and can't dedicate all our time and energy to this (as much as we'd sometimes like to).
Don't be so hard on yourself, try not to be too restrictive, and make room for the foods you love, even if they aren't traditionally good for you.0 -
I truly agree. I feel like its all in my head. Im only 5 ft tall so what sounds like a little to some looks like a lot on me. and that reminds me I need to update that bc I fell of the wagon some time ago and its not accurate.0

Like a few other people have said on here, I believe you CAN eat what you want, as long as it fits in your calorie goals. There is a reason fad diets don't work, and why yo-yo dieting is so common. People try to eliminate food groups, saying they are on a "diet" and will only eat clean food, with absolutely no junk. This typically does not work. If I had to eliminate foods from my life like pizza, chocolate, or wine, I most certainly would end up bingeing on those foods within a few weeks if not sooner! On top of the binge factor, once your "diet" is over and you begin to incorporate those eliminated foods again, you will probably gain some weight back.
My theory is to follow an 80/20 rule. I eat clean about 80% of the time, and eat what I want 20% of the time. As long as my calories stay within my daily goal, I am not too concerned. Think of this as more of a lifestyle change, not a diet. Don't do anything in weight loss mode that you will not be able to keep up for life. And unless you plan on never eating junk food again for the rest of your life, you should focus on learning how to moderate those foods. Like someone above me said, if there is a certain food you have little self control with, either don't buy that food or try to buy individual serving packages. Hopefully all of this helps you. Good luck!0 -
I found more self control when I started meeting my protein goal, and when I stopped taking hormonal birth control. I made both of those changes at the same time so I don't know if it was one, the other or both together that made the difference...but suddenly, I started meeting my calorie goal (at least for the weekly average if not the day). Whereas before I would eat at a deficit then way over (cheating I guess you could call it) and be stuck maintaining weight instead of losing.
I allow myself treats in moderation everyday I want them. I'm probably eating less sugar now than when I said NO SUGAR (lasted 3 days, then binge, then repeat).
I quit MFP at one point- this is a new account so I've been trying this calorie counting thing for about 1 1/2 yr.s, I haven't really seen progress until I made those 3 changes (more protein, eat treats in moderation, stopped hormonal birth control).
Hope that helps and good luck.0 -
why I cant stop eating junk that ive learned is terrible for me.
There are very few foods that are terrible for you. Like others, I suspect the root issue here is demonizing and totally abstaining from foods you enjoy. You can include just about anything in a diet that allows you to lose weight and be healthier. You just have to be selective about the frequency and quantity. In my diet this week? Strawberry cheesecake, rootbeer, hamburgers, restaurant burritos, goldfish, a latte, and whiskey.Im only 5 ft tall so what sounds like a little to some looks like a lot on me.0 -

Completely agree! There are no good foods and bad foods, if it fits my calorie/ macro goal for the day and I want it then I'm going to eat it, life's way too short to deprive myself of deliciousness!0
