Low Calorie Sushi?

edited March 1 in Food and Nutrition
I'm going out for sushi tonight and just trying to figure out what kind of roll I am going to order that's lowest in calories. HELP! I usually get the mexican roll, which from what I've read is pretty low in calories....any other suggestions? TIA!

California rolls and sashimi are usually safe :)

My favorite is the spicy tuna tempura roll. Nom nom nom. Not sure what counts as "low calorie" but I always fit it in.

Most sushi is already low calorie. I second Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll.

I get the tempura asparagus roll. I ask them to steam the asparagus, instead of frying it. It comes out to roughly 300 calories.

Just avoid anything containing mayo or deep fried ingredients. If you are really strict about calories avoid the avocado as well.

Keep in mind that sushi rice is dressed with sweetened vinegar. If you want to avoid the sugar, order sashimi and plain rice instead. Add some miso soup, unshelled edaname and a traditional seaweed salad for a filling low calorie order.

Chirashi sushi us also made with the vinegared/sweetened sushi rice.

And since I almost always eat two rolls, I also get the Philadephia roll.

Crap, now I want sushi for dinner too.

I really like sashimi, and simple sushi (not rolls) for high protein lower calorie.

The main thing to look out for is anything fried (omg yum) and anything with a cream sauce. All those sauces are mayo based, and while delicious, you could eat more sushi if you stuck to the simple stuff.

Seaweed salad + miso soup have pretty much zero calories. Depending where you go.
  • I try to stay away from tempura and sauces even though they're my total guilty pleasure. If I'm trying to stay low calorie, my top favorites are avocado/cucumber rolls, sashimi (especially octopus, or tako), or tamago (egg).

Ask them to make you a sushi roll wrapped in cucumber with no rice.
