If you're doing the same exercise AND you've lost weight, then yes, you'll burn less and less calories as your body gets more efficient at that particular exercise. The heart is a muscle, and if you're healthy, it adapts well to new rigors you put it thru.

Maybe you aren't working out at the same intensity each time.

Is your resting heart rate also reducing?

A few years ago my resting HR was in the mid 60's, now it's 48. When I'm exercising on a machine that measures power output I can see that I'm producing more power at a lower heart rate. My basic HRM (Polar FT7) doesn't know my VO2 max has improved so it will tell me I'm burning less calories when in reality I'm burning more. A calorie is a unit of energy and has a direct relationship to power.

Remember HRMs count heartbeats and not calories so at best there's an indirect relationship based on averages.

You want to burn more calories? Go faster, harder, longer!

HRMs don't measure calorie burn, they measure heart rate. As you get fitter, heart rate goes down for the same exercise/exertion level.

the more "in-shape" you get the less your body has to work
