is splenda as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

or just artificial sweeteners in general? i know a lot of them get a bad rep, because of all the chemical artificial yadda yadda blah blah. but i'm not talking about living off the stuff. i just mean will a glass of unsweet tea with some splenda in it while i'm out at a restaurant or something, for example, be that bad? usually if i'm gonna drink sweet tea, i'll take real sugar over artificial any day, but sometimes i just don't want all the calories that come with it!

Unless you have a proven sensitivity to it (not one that's just in your head, as a lot of people who hear about how EVIIIIL they are seem to get) there's nothing wrong with it. Most artificial sweeteners would require a ridiculously high dose to come even close to harmful.

Splenda is fine. The so called "studies" you hear about are done on animals through MASSIVE amounts of it at ONE TIME.

Anything else said about it is coming from hippies who eat all natural crap. I'm sure you drink water too. From a bottle or tap.... if you do, you can't claim you eat/drink natural. If you believe tap water/bottle water is natural you're full of ****, lol.

There's nothing wrong with it, but I'd recommend stevia if you're going to use sweeteners. I feel it's sweeter and less strange tasting, though by no means does it resemble table sugar.

I use sweeteners all the time. The only reason I am careful with it is because I have a sweet tooth and it sometimes makes me want more sweet stuff, but other than that I don't worry.

If it doesn't make you feel bad then enjoy it.

I have no problem at all with splenda or saccharine but for me aspartame triggers migraines so I don't use it. That doesn't mean that others shouldn't use it, just that it doesn't agree with my body.

Nothing wrong with any of the artificial sweeteners (in moderation, like anything else). I use Splenda on my morning oatmeal and drink diet soda sometimes and I am healthier and more in control over my eating and cravings than I have ever been. I tried to like stevia but it just has a funny flavor to me. YMMV

ETA: Wow, a lot of common sense in this thread so far!

I've used Splenda for as long as I care to remember (probably around 6-7 years) I could not live without it!! I have no side effects (if you know what I mean  ) And I just couldn't have real sugar anymore - I really don't like the taste of it now.

    I couldn't recommend Splenda enough!!

I personally do not use them often - usually only diet soda - because I don't like the taste. If you like the taste, and you'd rather spend calories in something other then sugar, then use them.

I don't get the fear mongering around "unnatural" and "processed" food.

yeah they say it causes cancer and effects your brain. I don't care. I love my coffees but not the extra calories that sugar gives you. I don't like stevia or any of the other stuff. tried them all. I figure as long as you do it in moderation and limit it eight a day then that isn't so bad. My hubbie hates me using it. SO I gave up diet pop to make him happy. I wont give up my splenda in my coffee though.

I personally stay away from aspartame and stevia because they taste disgusting to me. But I've never had Splenda so I can't say anything on the taste. Health-wise, I don't Splenda is too bad. As long as you don't have a reaction or health reason to stay away I think you're good to go. :)
