You will make it a priority if you want it to be one.
I wake up at 4:30am to go to the gym - then get to work by 7:30am - get off of work at 4pm - do my online classes for school - then bed around 10/11pm and repeat.
You can function on less than 8 hours of sleep, you just don't want to.
edited to fix somethingWhy do you think you need to work out for 2 hours?
Do a shorter workout. Workout at home. Go for a run or a walk after work. Find a closer gym.
these two things.
seriously.
we are ALL busy- no one "finds time" we MAKE time because it's important.
I work 3 jobs- train as a dancer for 10-15 hours a week- 3 solid lifts a week (usually M-W-F- for just under 2 hours each) and I maintain and out of town long distance relationship.
It can be done. You just need to adapt your schedule and what drives you to make it happen.
QFT!!! I have 4 kids and make it to the gym almost everyday.0 -
They're YOUR priorities, you pick 'em. Then accept the consequences of 'em.
How about: YOU do YOU, and maybe worry less about what other people you've labelled "gym bunnies" do? Because I honestly can't tell from your post how much of this comment is frustration that you want to do more than you're doing, versus how much of it is judging other people for what THEY'RE doing.0 -
How do all you gym bunnies find the time.
I manage to get in a 30/40 min run
Im sorry but I'm missing the point:huh:
What else are you trying to add on top of your already doable workout that you seem to have already accomplished...may be the question?
She wants to start weight training. She cannot do that and have her 30 min cardio sessions in.
Oh Okay,
OP..,umm solution:
alternate days for strength and cardio (30-40min workouts)0 -

I gave up on the dream of 8 hours of sleep a long, long time ago. I am up at 4:40am, at work until 6pm most nights, off to kids sports or my sports until 9pm week nights and all weekend, and usually don't hit the bed till 11pm at the earliest. I find 15 minutes windows to take brisk 1 mile walks. I use my hour lunch to get in a good 40 minute workout. I rotate a lot of HIIT and regular cardio workouts in where I can.
Just the way it is.0 -
you may be happier with the results from lifting instead of cardio.
maybe do lifting a few days a week and pick one day to do cardio or something.
cardio isnt necessary and lifting is much more fun.0 -

You have NO clue how much each persons body needs to sleep, everyone is different, different ages require different amount, health issues demand a different amount. Seems she'd be far more aware how much her body needs than you would. If it works for you to get less sleep so be it but don't go telling another person that they are the same as you!
What a silly comment to say to someone asking for help "you just don't want to. How ridiculous to tell another person what they feel they need is not what you need.
Come on get real, the OP is 34, you're 21, now that I see how young you are I can see a comment being made like above. Age truly does make a different in needs.
Yes someone can sleep 4 hours and feel it's enough, but because we think it's enough doesn't mean our body thinks it is.
I'm sorry but I highly doubt if she got up 45 minutes earlier to get a workout in, she would not be able to function. Let's be honest, most people that workout at the start of their day have more energy and feel better the rest of the day. There are mornings that I clearly just don't want to get out of bed....and I get an extra 45 minutes of sleep, I am 42 years old, and I dont' function any differently sleeping 7.25 hours as I do 8 hours.0 -

Sorry but I don't function on less than 8 hours it isn't that I don't want to I can't, I was working long hours and getting 6 hours sleep a night at most and ended up ill and had to have bed rest for two weeks!!
You may be able to function on less and that is great for you but not for eveyone!0 -
Just some background, I'm doing a 10K in September hense the cardio each night this will soon be more like an hour instead of 30/40 mins unfortunately if I can round the run in September I need to do this each night at the moment I can fit in maybe one rest day a week at moment.
I want to do a more rounded workout it's just so hard with life, I get up at 6.30 so that I can have breakfast before getting into work this has stopped chronic ingestion so I won't go back to eating at my desk the extra 30 minutes is not worth the pain. I get into work at 8.45 and finish at 6 alot of the time I work through lunch. I get home if I'm lucky just before 7 London buses where I live are a nightmare.
I then go straight out for a run and get back have a bath and dinner by that time it's around 9ish and then I need to wind down before going to bed at 10 and hopefully sleep at 10.30 then it all starts again.
I do batch cook for lunches and have simple dinners that I generally have to pop in the oven or hob.
Washing once a week wouldn't really work as some things like sports bras need washing twice a week.
The 2 hour workout at the gym was an hour of cardio, 20 minutes weights, 20 minutes core and then cool down and streching. The gym is on hold atm due to the running I need to do each night on the road/footpaths for the 10k.
I also do need a life outside work and working out.0 -
For me what works is fitting activity into my daily life. I'm not a gym-goer anymore, and these days find myself far more keen to adopt exercise practices that do not involve specialised equipment or the need to be in a special place to do it. I'm sure others mileage may vary, but this is what works for me, or rather what I work towards.
Some things will simply take time, for example if I ever run, that will be something I will need to find 3/ 4/ 5 hours a week for, likewise with some yoga or pilates I would want to devote 2/ 3 hours a week to that. but all in all, maintaining a flexible attitutude, and also incorporating exercise into other activities, like a walk/ run/ swim with friends instead of just a coffee sometimes helps a lot.
Also, if you're really stuck for time, cut back on the low and medium intensity cardio, and focus on things like some resistance training and some sprint/ interval training instead0 -

If you're already doing all that running at the moment, do you really need to do an hour cardio when you make it to the gym? I know that's not quite what you've asked, but I think it's relevant anyway.
If you really want to add in some strength training currently while training for your race, home exercise equipment I think is your best bet for now. You can get a 20kg set of dumbells from Argos for a reasonable price, and I have a 12kg and 8kg kettlebell that I picked up cheaply (one from Argos, one believe it or not from Aldi). Doesn't take up much space either.0 -

I bolded a few things that you could easily fix.
-You will soon be running for an hour every night, which right now is only 30/40 minutes. You found extra time for that, so why can't you trade in a few nights for lifting?
-Can't you get up 30 minutes earlier (at 6) and go run, then lift weights at night? Just a suggestion.
-Maybe shorten your wind down time
-Washing sports bras should not be a big impact on your schedule. All you have to do is throw them in the washer and walk away.
-Why not try a different routine at the gym? Maybe not so much cardio, and more weights? No core.
-Everyone needs a life outside of work and working out.
OP, I am not trying to be mean. But you asked for help, and you keep shooting down everything with an excuse. I understand that I might be younger and able to function on less sleep, but I love my sleep too. And I know that there are plenty of people who can't function on less than 8 hours but still do even with a family, work, and school, and they still hit the gym everyday. If it's that difficult for you to hit the gym right now, then just focus on your 10k and running.0 -
Okay firstly I shoot you down as you tried to say I can manage on less sleep I CAN'T it's not that I don't want to I CAN'T I have had to put this in caps as you do not seem to understand this.
I am alot older than you and I cannot function on less sleep so getting up 30 mins earlier is not an option please stop banging on about it.
Washing sports bras was a suggestion someone said about only doing laundry once a week I obviously wash other things and they need ironing etc which I physically have to be there to do.
Wind down time cannot be cut down it's the time I need prior to going to sleep it's about half an hour.
Core is one of the most important parts of my exercise routine due to major back issues.
I didn't actually ask for help as such I asked how people manage to fit in their epic gym sessions0 -

Some ideas we use:
(i havent read the whole thread so maybe some repeats...)
-utilize the weekend big time!
-settle for 7.5 hours now and then
-freezer meals- spend Sunday cooking a couple freezer meals that you can then just pull out and defrost for a nutritious and quick meal. Some that we like to use are lasagna, pizza doughs, enchiladas, minestrone soup, etc.
-"tag team dinner"- make some of the dinner in the morning while you are making breakfast, let your partner finish it off at night so you have that time to work out. If you aren't cooking for more than one, then this just makes it all faster overall...
-know you can get a good lifting routine in in a short amount of time, esp if you are aiming for a running goal. My two fav quotes from Matt Fitzgerald (I know, I always talk about him but I love his work!)
“There is no need to pad your workout with multiple exercises for the same muscle group or numerous sets of each exercise. Just get in, go hard, and get out” Racing Weight
“Everyone has time to run more. Scientific surveys have revealed that people who exercise regularly do not have any more free time in their daily lives than people who claim to be “too busy” to exercise…It’s a matter of priorities. If you really want to run more you will find a way. It’s that simple.” -Matt Fitzgerald from The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition0 -

Come back when you are an adult with adult responsibilities. You are not at 210 -
You do not need to run an hour every night for a 10k.
You're 30-40 minutes will cover you just fine on that.
Also I don't understand the washing of sports bras and why that takes time? Throw laundry in the wash- walk away. Pull bras out and hang to dry.
Also skip the core work and learn to do front squats- it's a more valuable use of your time. Cool down takes 5 minutes. Shouldn't take more than 10 at most.
Here's the thing. You're saying why you're so busy all the time. But if you want it to happen- you'll make the time for it to happen- otherwise it's just not a priority. Sometimes that means something else has to give- and that's okay. But if running for September is you're priority- then focus on that and don't worry about the weight training. Nothing wrong with that- shift your focus after your run for a more well rounded program.
That's okay too.0 -

No one is doing 4 hours gym sessions everyday. If I wanted to I do the same on weekends. There is no point to doing excessive working out. I have got better result my third attempt from second attempt and I cut my workouts down 50%. My intensity has increased. I do a 4 minute HIIT cardio burn that leaves me drenched.0 -

their life is not your life.
Do what works for you that supports your goals, you're life and is sustainable.
Stop worrying about what other people are doing.0 -
if your goals are different than the person spending 4 hours in the gym, then why compare yourself to them? kwim? I run like 10+ hours a week, but if you aren't training hard for a marathon, then why compare yourself to me? we have different priorities. Dean Karnazes runs like 300 mile crazy races; sometimes he only sleeps 4 hours at night and, in his book, he says about he does this because it wants to get everything he loves into the day. his priorities. decide what yours are and then go for it0

Honestly, I had to get a shorter commute. My old commute ranged 1-1.5 hours each way, depending on if the metro was being a D (it very often was). I also really need 8 hrs of sleep. I could easily spend 3+ hours a day commuting. With so little time, I was less likely to pack a lunch. Then I'd eat high calorie fast food marketed at healthy (I'm looking at you, Chop't Salads).
You don't have to spend hours at the gym to get results. However, people who do spend hours at the gym probably have a shorter commute/work week.0 -

I guess you aren't either at 34 washing your sports bras all evening.0 -
How do all you gym bunnies find the time.
I get up at 6.30am go to work and then don't get home till just before 7pm in the three hours before bed (I need 8 hours sleep otherwise I cannot function) I need to make dinner sort out lunch do any washing and chill a bit. I manage to get in a 30/40 min run but I don't have time for much else how does everyone get in so many hours of exercise?
I do exactly the same hours as you. During the week, my options are a) quick workout before dinner b) run at lunchtime and baby-wipe shower at work (we don't have showers) or c) get up early. c) seldom happens but at least I have my gear packed to do a) or b) instead!
A couple of nights a week, make your gym/workout time your chill-a-bit time; you don't have to be parked in front of the box to relax. 30 mins to an hour is plenty - save your two hour workouts for the weekend if you really feel you have to take that long. But honestly if I could go that long I'd look at working harder rather than longer.
Put the washing on, work out, take it out and hang it up. And if you live alone, chores are pretty minimal and washing can't take up more than twice a week, max. Unless you're using a copper tub and a mangle.0 -
