How to let your family know you don't eat processed food?

Okay, so on my dad's side of the family, they're not very wealthy or anything so they just get processed food for everything. I've been staying down here for two weeks and I have yet to eat something that's not from a box/jar/can. I haven't eaten ANY fresh vegetables or fruit and I'm feeling really sick. Usually I eat as healthily as I can, but here there isn't one thing healthy. I can feel myself getting sick and I've already gained weight. But I don't want to be a hassle and be "picky" about my food or so they call it. What should I do? Should I just leave and go back home and shorten my visit?

    Just break up.

    Define "healthy"

You are really getting sick from eating stuff from a box/jar/can? That must suck to be you.

If it's that bad, go buy some ingredients at the store and cook a meal for everyone.

Not sure if this is a serious comment?

    100% serious

Judging by your binge thread yesterday, I wouldn't go blaming your family's food choices for you feeling sick.

OP, I left my boyfriend and am staying with family until my new lease starts. For the whole three months I'm not living in my flat, I've had to pay that rent and my phone contract while saving for a downpayment before my deposit comes back, with no income until mid-september. I can still afford to buy a few healthy items here and there to fill in for the nutrition that my family's food choices lack and I cook a healthy meal for my family once a week. It's not difficult and I'm certainly not gaining weight.

  • This. I can totally understand how you're feeling. Anyone that is saying just eat within your calorie range and don't worry about it is so wrong and doesn't understand how their body works. All the processed/boxed junk is so bad for us and doesn't contribute anything to our bodies. Losing weight and eating more healthily(is that a word?, lol) is WAY more then staying within a calorie goal.

I would let them know that you are feeling like crap because of the processed junk and make some meals for them. Or if they absolutely won't have anything to do with it, I'd get my own stuff and make some meals for myself or at the very least some more nutritious sides.

My body works just fine. Getting proper nutrition has nothing to do with demonizing food. But nice try

Buy groceries and keep them hidden in your room.

Unless you're picking food off the plant itself then it has some sort of process to get it to where you are. Unless you're eating tons of fried foods or sweets you're not going to get fat. All that really matters is that you eat within your calorie goals.

You won't get sick eating processed foods unless you have celiac disease or some other pre existing condition. You get sick from bacteria or virus invasions in your body.

From personal experience, not to mention thousands of examples/empirical evidence, I beg to differ. You CAN feel sick from processed foods, especially if your body has adjusted to having a steady influx of healthy foods. I would explain, but since you believe Jessie's idea of "science" is your final word, I'm not sure you'd take it to heart. So instead, I would suggest you do a little more research of your own on the subject. That goes for anyone else who isn't taking this seriously.

While how you "feel" is exponentially important to your well - being there is no basis that any foods, outside of allergies or medical conditions, on their own cause ill effects.

No one is arguing that getting proper nutrition isn't important. I feel like junk if I don't get my micronutrients but I don't waste my breath demonizing any foods based solely on words like "healthy" "unhealthy". These words are meaningless. How I fit a certain food into my diet is what determines whether they are good or bad for me

Go shopping, buy the ingredients, and cook a meal for everyone. Show them how it's done.

100% thumbs up- they will be healthier for it, too. I am visiting my brother next month who lives in the southeast and that is what I am going to do. He knows it in advance and wants to learn what I have. Be honest because you are entitled to meet your dietary needs.

Just had this experience while visiting my wifes' family.

I asked her sister if I could put on a BBQ for everyone. About 24 people showed up. Little spendy, but well worth it.

Well I wouldn't lie to them and say you don't eat processed food, since I'm sure you do. As for getting sick? My guess is it's psychosomatic

Ummm, I don't eat processed food period so why do you presume that this poster does? You are not being very positive in that comment or the psychosomatic one either. I can promise you that I would feel horrible if I ate that junk again because I am diabetic and would know within one meal. Be kinder.

Based on what peer reviewed research?

Like I mentioned before. Vegetables and fruits are processed prior to delivery to the market.
Meat is processed by multiple processors prior to making it to the retail shelf.
Staples like flour, milk, butter, salt, and sugar are all processed prior to being packaged for purchase at the market.

Don't be so sure that you don't eat processed food, unless you're taking a bite directly from a plant in your garden.

^And that comment is relevant how?

OP: Go to the grocery store and buy your own food if you are worried about it. Two weeks won't kill you. I'm sure you are experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort since you aren't used to eating processed foods, so just eat the foods in moderation. Or talk to your dad and see if there's any way to buy fresh veggies and fruits and other whole foods.

Clean eating is just a fad anyway, eat within calories and nothing bad will happen to you!

Not for me; clean eating got me off diabetic meds and cured my IBS, GERD, anxiety, sleep problems and more. You will never convince me (or anyone else for that matter) that eating foods the way that Mother Nature created them is a "fad".

So go out and buy the food you prefer. The foods they are eating is NOT making them fat, its the quantities they are eating of those foods. The only thing that matters is CALORIC intake. It's a QUANTITY thing, NOT a quality thing.

Naturally if you eat good "healthy" foods you will feel better but you will lose as much weight eating 1200 (<--- Favorite number, haha) calories of McDonald's everyday than you will eating 1200 calories of "healthy unprocessed" foods.

Yeah… no. Clean eating isn't a fad. It's a lifestyle just like those who choose to eat fast food, chips, and cookies. Some people simply don't WANT to eat those foods and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Pretty sure 100% raw diets are pretty faddish

Exactly, well said. Have you noticed all of those comments are from guys and young ones at that? ! lol! I am not surprised to say the least.

I'm sure mother nature didn't intend you to drive your nice car to the grocery store to buy her gifts that people picked and manufactured and packaged strategically for you.

Everything, when broken down is a chemical. Explain to me how someone who doesn't suffer from a medical condition and gets a balanced diet could benefit from demonizing foods? Outside of driving themselves bsc?

Some people have no desire to eat "bad foods." They are perfectly happy and content eating a whole foods diet... and that doesn't make them bat **** crazy.

Sorry to tell you this but that had more to do with losing 24lbs than the actual food you ate...
