HELP, IN NEED OF A SUBSTITUTE FOR TORTILLA CHIPS!
Replies

I'm in need of a good substitute for tortilla chips! I LOVE tortilla chips but they are getting the better of me and ruining my diet. I really enjoy them with re fried beans and salsa. Can anyone think of a substitute that is a little salty, but less in calories...and maybe even good for you???? Thanks all!
How about broccoli?0 -
Ever try Beanitos? I love those. My favorites are the pinto bean ones with sea salt.0
-
Mission Extra-Thin corn tortillas - cut them into triangles and bake them until they're crunchy (super easy in the toaster oven). 2 tortillas (about 12 chips) for 80 calories0
-
Get whole wheat tortillas (I like "La tortilla factory low carb")
Cut them into triangle shapes and bake in the oven!
My favorite chip substitute is cucumber slices. Crunchy!0 -

Not sure if they are healthier but they are amazing.
The no salt variety is great for crunchy emergencies. :laugh:0 -
Try sliced cucumber with sea salt.
Totally agree! Although if your having the beans and salsa with, I would say, you probably don't need the salt as much as you think you do. Try the cucumbers with and without salt, see if you really need the extra salt. Another idea, there is hummus chips and lentil chips (have more protein) and instead of salsa, have you ever tried fresh pico de gallo. Life changer!!! Its delish and taste super fresh!0 -
I've been eating Almond Thins (Blue Diamond - Almond Nut-thins Gluten-free Crackers Hint of Sea Salt) and I told my boyfriend last night that they really remind me of tortilla chips! They have a thicker consistency, but the flavor is similar to me. He didn't really agree, but who cares? Lol!
130 calories gets you about 30 chips. I eat them with salsa - because it's so low in calories and sometimes guacamole or laughing cow garlic cheese wedges, which are only 35 calories each when I want a more substantial snack.0 -
Another vote for bake-your-own from corn or whole wheat tortillas. Even if you give them a light coat of cooking oil spray, you're still not getting the calories of the commercial variety.0
-
I use steamed edamame in the pods with grinded sea salt for my fix. It doesn't help with the salsa craving, but it definitely helps with something to munch on and that's salty. I also like popcorn in the mini bags, but they usually don't have enough salt to replace tortilla chips.
Although I will say, I quite enjoy going to On the Border for tortilla chips and salsa. I just figure out how to fit it in that day. I can't buy them though. Buying them causes problems for me.0 -
Good news you have identified a trigger food. Your goal now is not to find an alternative to continue eating with fewer calories; your goal is to learn to control the craving that keeps you from stopping at the proper amount. That is the key problem. Learn to control you and keep eating tortilla chips. Stop when you are supposed to and WIN a huge battle.0
-
My first thought was pita chips! But they're only a good substitute if you can control yourself with those. Salty things are so easy to just keep eating and eating. Ultimately I agree with those who have said there's no substitute.
Find a crunchy alternative food that doesn't even remind you of tortilla chips. I like popcorn with sea salt or wasa crackers. Crunchy, satisfies my craving, and in the case of wasa crackers, there's some fiber to fill me up.0 -
i like these crackers called "savory mini thins" from trader joes. they are toasty, salty, crunchy, full of flax seeds (which i love) and you get 37 crackers per serving. (130 calories)
they are a little small for dipping but great for munching on.
also, i dont know if you already do this but if you love what you love, separate them into serving sizes IN ADVANCE so there is never a whole bag of them in front of you. and limit yourself to one bag. i write the calories on a ziplock and have a snack bucket all portioned and marked full of my favorite snacks... so i can ust grab and be aware.0 -
This thread seriously depresses me look at all the people with the same problem and they just dont see it.0
-
It's all well and good, but it's not a tortilla chip.0
-
make your own.
get some corn tortilla (or the trader joe brown rice ones because this is the only use i've found for those wraps!)
cut then into triangles, spray a bit of olive oil on (a bit not a lot since you want then to stay crispy), throw on some seasonings (i like salt, pepper and tagorashi powder) . lay out on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven until crispy.
i have no idea about temp since the numbers cant be seen on my oven but it's on the low side so somewhere between 100-3000 -

i dont know i am pretty sure everyone knows they have portion control problems. i think this thread is pretty full of solutions. you just arent seeing them. if people could just turn off their impulses like a button they probably wouldnt be here trying to lose weight.0 -
Replacing your trigger food with another food item is not fixing the issue. Learning to overcome that issue is the cure....everything else is a bandaid or a blindfold.
If I eat a bag of tortilla chips and decide I cant eat those then eating a bag of pita chips isn't going to change the truth...I can't stop eating chips.
Eliminating things from your diet doesn't fix the problem... The problem is still there its only hiding until you are weak and the trigger food is within hands reach. Work on the core problems and overcome the weaknesses0 -

exactly.
i'm a big eater but i have been having success with picking and choosing my battles. for instance i'm very much saltycrunchy's *kitten* (especially certain times of the month) i usually plan ahead and will leave space in my calories for that bag of flaming hot cheetos or whatever i decide to go saltycrunchy monster on.
i find it's better to indulge once a week (keeping within your goals) instead of completely being no "no satan, i rebuke thee".
i'm losing weight just fine doing that0 -

yeah but not everyone can do cold turkey. baby steps between A and Z still eventually gets you to Z.
and if this thread depresses you, i envy your life. i'd love to not have problems of my own that i got to internalize what other people go through.0 -
I just tried Superfood Chips and O...M...G.... My husband says These are too good. THey can't be good for you. But like with anything......moderation!

Cauliflower Tortillas (Paleo, Grain Free, Gluten free)
¾ a head of cauliflower riced or 2 cups riced and packed
2 eggs
salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2.For these I actually rice my cauliflower slightly more fine that cauliflower rice. Toss ¾ a head of cauliflower cut up and most of the stem removed and pulse until you get a texture slightly finer than rice. (Once it's riced measure it to make sure you have 2 cups packed.)
3.Place riced cauliflower in bowl and microwave for 2 minutes and stir, then another two minutes and stir again then place in a dish towel and squeeze excess water out as hard as you can. (You're going to want to get out as much water as you can and be careful not to burn yourself because it's going to be very hot.)
4.Place drained cauliflower back in bowl and add two eggs, salt and pepper and mix until well combined.
5.As a note it will be a little bit runny but shouldn't be pure liquid either. Spread mixture onto a baking sheet into 6 small fairly flat circles.
6.Place in the oven for 10 minutes then pull out of the oven and carefully peel them off the parchment and flip them and place back in the oven for 5-7 more minutes.
7.Once they're done place them on a wire rack to cool slightly.
8.Heat a medium sized pan over medium heat and place the tortillas into the pan pressing down slightly and brown them to your liking. (Don't skip this step because it gives them slightly crispy on the edges and gives them a wonderfully nutty taste)0 -
Replacing your trigger food with another food item is not fixing the issue.
Work on the core problems and overcome the weaknesses
if someone has to WORK on something, it means it takes time. in the meantime, small changes help people get there. yes, of course the solution is willpower and portion control, but it can also be that someone just LIKES something. liking something is not a disease. finding a way to still eat what you like and stay within macros and br healthier about it is a solution. and a long term and practical one.0 -
Tumaro brand low carb tortillas are only 60 calories and come in a huge variety of flavors.....
put them in the oven with some sea salt and pam and you got some low calorie chips0 -
Good news you have identified a trigger food. Your goal now is not to find an alternative to continue eating with fewer calories; your goal is to learn to control the craving that keeps you from stopping at the proper amount. That is the key problem. Learn to control you and keep eating tortilla chips. Stop when you are supposed to and WIN a huge battle.
You do have a good point, control is a good thing. Besides if she has beans and salsa to dip the chips in, no matter what she subs them with, eating too much is gonna have some not so nice effects.
But in the chance that she doesn't want something as processed or as salty, and is going to start watching the amount she eats, I think this is a great step. Yea portion control would be a great thing for her learn, but portion control AND healthy choices is even better!0 -
I'm not sure if anyone suggested this yet. But I used to make my own tortilla chips. I would buy a 100% whole wheat tortilla, then cut it up into smaller pieces. Microwave it for 1 minute to dry it out. Bake it in the oven for about 5 minutes and they come out crispy and delicious! There are recipes online if you google them. If I needed a little extra I would drizzle some olive oil on them with a dash of salt. Goodluck!0

Have you considered iceberg lettuce? Sort of a taco salad type thing? I've been doing iceberg (shreds) w/ ground turkey (with taco seasoning), beans, onions, tomatoes, peppers, lt sour cream (or yogurt) lately. Another bonus...easy to make a bunch ahead and portion it out.0
-
I had to dump tortillas because they were a trigger food for me and impossible to portion control. I can however portion control quinoa(simple 7)lentil (Cofresh poppadum)and Beanitos (navy bean puffs)chips.0
-
When I don't have the calories (or want the carbs) for chips, I eat guacamole and/or salsa with carrots.0
-
I eat tortilla chips with moderation (I ate 6 small ones for my snack this evening). They're not a trigger food for me. That doesn't mean I always want the salt and calories, though.
In that case, I'll use celery or Romaine hearts for dipping in salsa or whatever dip I feel like eating. They're crunchy and their shape makes it easy to hold the dip without spilling.0
