But I didn't eat 3,500 calories extra

Hi, I'm 29, 5 7 and weigh around 186. For health reasons (have pcos and am on steroids for mctd) I'm on 1200-1300 caloriE diet.have been uber good and have lost weight. Past couple of days hubby been off work so we been going out for the day etc. I have still weighed and been careful(except when we went out to eat)and have exercised very hard to make up for the bits I am missing, yet for past two days I have been 1.4lbs up! Now I know there is some natural fluctuation and that you need to look at overall progress, but I want to ensure that I am not gaining!!why would I have gained this much?i haven't gone over my calories, although it has been less healthy food and have been to gym etc

Any inspiration please?

Weight fluctations of a few pounds is actually quite common and you can do this in a single day. Usually it's a result of water retention or water loss. I usually gain several pounds before that time of month.

So yeah, if you know you haven't gone over your calorie goal, there's no way you could gain that much weight in such a short period.

It's because you say <<uber>> ... it's scientific fact that that puts on pounds :-p

Stop fretting the small changes and go on the trend over weeks not days.

Weighing daily keeps me aware of where I'm at, and until now has been ok!! I know that steroids can also cause weird water retention as well, I just can't afford to gain at the moment!! I suppose it will have to be a longer gym session for me today

NORMAL! Weight can vary due to many things, including water retention, whether or not you have food in your stomach, hormonal changes. And so on. I once "gained" 3 pounds in 12 hours. Stop freaking out.

If you have been eating out, you will likely have eaten more sodium which can cause water retention too. Make sure you drink plenty for the next day or two and it should go. I weigh every day too and the scales do have blips but it is about accepting the general trend and not worrying as other people have said. You will soon start to see its normal :)

Scales are designed to upset you. At least mine is.
You did not eat an extra 3500 kcal, so you did not gain a pound of fat.
You're doing fine, keep it up.

    Why can't you afford?
You need to look at the bigger picture, not day by day. But that's just my opinion

I have a mixed connective tissue disorder and whilst I'm not obese, the extra weight is affecting my joint pain. I don't want to up my steroid intake, and am trying to reduce it, therefore I need to lose weight which will, hopefully keep the pain in check. I'm not being silly here, or one of those "I have 4 whole lbs to lose in 3 days so I can fit into my dress" people.... It's a genuine issue
  • I guess it's all about water balance, at this period the weight may behave like scales, becides you mentioned that had eaten some not very healthy food, that in fact usually contain too much salt or sugar which in turn leads to a water retention. Anyway be careful with such situations, it may be a kind of stress for your body, you make it work as hard as usual, but the quality of food is lower, that may affect the function of the heart muscle, so I"d advise you to keep it under control.

The training is one of the reasons why you're retaining water. It's good. It's for repair. As long as your numbers are right you've got no worries.

I'm currently retaining 3 lbs of water due to overtraining this week. I'm taking 3 days off, and the water will drop.

    It's almost certainly random fluctuation.

Two days ago, I weighed myself and weighed 182lb. The next day, I weighed 184 in the morning and 186 in the afternoon. This morning, I'm back to 184. I tell you this just to illustrate the point - there's clearly no way that I put on 4lb in a day and then lost 2 of that back again in 12 hours!

I like to weigh myself daily because it makes it easier to see how much I really weigh - I like to use my average over a week - but it does involve not worrying about small fluctuations.

Why can't you afford a temporary 1.4 lb water weight gain? Exercise won't get rid of it. Just relax, keep doing what you've been doing without freaking out about it and you'll be fine. I agree with the poster who said stop weighing daily. These normal day-to-day fluctuations happen and it sounds like seeing it on the scale sends you into a tailspin. You're going to burn yourself out and end up with a very unhealthy relationship with food and your body if you don't relax about it.

Take a deep breath and relax. Seriously. It's just water weight and will come off on its own. Extra time at the gym could actually make you retain more water.
 Weight – So many things can affect weight, because of this it shouldn’t be the only way you track your progress. Things to keep in mind:
:drinker: Always use the same scale – Different scales can show different weights. You will get the most accurate number for tracking when using the same scale.
:drinker: Don’t move the scale – Carpet, uneven flooring, different types of flooring…can all affect the weight on the scale. So when you weigh, you want it to be approximately the same spot for the most accurate number for tracking.
:drinker: 3500 calories – To gain 1lb of fat you need to be over maintenance by 3500 calories.
:drinker: Muscle Repair – Muscles will hold onto water to repair, because of this it is not uncommon to see a gain for a little while after a workout. This weight comes right back off when they are done repairing.
:drinker: Sodium – Can cause you to retain water. This can also be amplified if you don’t drink enough to flush it out of your system. This is also another reason for temporary weight gain.
:drinker: Water – Not drinking enough water can actually cause you to retain water. Recommended amount is 8 cups or 64oz. I drink 64 oz to 128 oz of water a day. It doesn’t have to be plain water either. I like to flavor mine with crystal light or tea.
:drinker: Time of day – Your weight can fluctuate throughout the day. So for the most accurate tracking, you want to weigh at around the same time.
:drinker: Frequency – This is up to you, but if small fluctuations bother you than only weigh once a week or less.
:drinker: Lightest Weight – Will be naked, first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom
:drinker: Multiple times a Day – Don’t Do It. As I said before, your weight will fluctuate throughout the day. What you eat, what you’re wearing, ect will all affect weight.
:drinker: Clothes – If you weigh with clothing on, keep in mind that the scale will show your weight plus the weight of your clothes. (Jeans are heavy)
:drinker: TOM - A lot of women will retain water around their TOM, but its just temporary and will go away.

This is a chart I made last year (using my own weigh ins) that shows day to day fluctuations. Notice how the overall trend is down:

    And this year's trendweight chart:

calm down and don't put extra time in the gym and stress yourself...it will compound the issue.

It is water retention...which can be caused by a few things...as a women it could be due to Period coming, eating out or stress...

If it's stress it means cortisol levels are up holding water...and if you stress out more (which it sounds like you are) you will retain more water due to stress...see the circle that's happening...

  • My weight fluctuates even up to 7 lbs in a day. I know if calories out > calories in, I just have to keep chugging along. Eventually I see a lower number, i.e. 3500 deficit for 3 weeks and my weight will go up 1, down 2, up 5, down 3, etc., but after three weeks it will go down 3 from the original number.

The short answer for your weight gain is the hard exercise. You've created inflammation which has in turned extra water retention.

Low calorie diet is hard to sustain beyond three months. Try finding another diet if you come unstuck. I'd suggest 5:2 fasting or low carb. But whatever you do, eat whole foods not processed and refined foods.

Exercise for you health not for weightloss.

Thank you for all your responses! I will attempt not to weigh myself (although I do in am, no clothes, same position etc) every morning, however hard it may be!

I need to be on a low calorie, not any "fad" diet, due to my health issues.

I suppose I will wait out this weight gain and hope it will continue going down, just upset with myself because it was sighs. Downward trend!!

    Deep breath in and continue

Your scale can only tell you weight. It doesn't know the difference between you or a bag of flour.

If you didn't eat an extra 3,500 calories then know that what it's weighing isn't additional fat in your body.

After that it's all conjecture. Could be water retention. Could be poop. Some could be fat if you haven't been exact with your logging and slacking in the gym. Could be the scale wasn't exactly flat so the weighing mechanism was off.

Keep note of it, keep a close eye on it, if you continue to gain and keep the weight gained then go back to your health care professional that you're working with.
