  • I have GERD and its pretty bad. I had an upper GI scope done last October with some biopsies and the esophagus damage is pretty bad. I take a high dosage of nexium everyday and will probably have to for the rest of my life. If I go one week without it, no matter how well I eat, the acid reflux comes back and its not just acid - I actually regurgitate food :(

When it gets really bad, I make it a point to avoid the worst culprits: soda (only drink it occassionally anyway); I rarely drink dairy milk so this isnt a problem (mildly lactose intolerant) - but you can substitute soy or almond milk for dairy milk in most recipes. I've had to avoid citrus drinks (love orange juice) because it always causes problems for me.

I would suggest maybe eliminating the foods that you are told to avoid for a few weeks to a month while taking your medication and see how you feel. Then slowly in small quantities add some back in and see what is and isnt a problem. I've found that most things in moderation are ok for me (except citrus).

As far as recipes, you can either find some recipes that dont include the ingredients that are problems for you, or substitute other things for them. Like I said, there are dairy substitutes that makes it easy; try garlic and onion powder instead of actual garlic and onions and see if that helps (short term solution) or just use less than the recipe calls for so that you get a milder flavor from them. I just experiment with switching up veggies, etc.

I have the same exact problem. I always make sure to never run our of Nexium.

I also have acid reflex. I couldn't take most of the medicines they gave me...they made all my joints ache. Another one I am trying is Ranitdine, so far so good but I do have to watch what I eat. All the foods you listed I stay away from. I find if I eat smaller meals, just more often that helps. Also don't eat a few hours before laying down. I also sleep with elevated pillows. I'm interested too, to see what others tell you. Jen

I've been dealing with the same for about 3 years now. At first I didn't take it very seriously, and it didn't get better. I was taking meds, but not changing habits enough to make an impact. A few scary doctor visits later, and I decided to make real change. Now I'm only on one pill a day (omeprazole), and trigger foods don't have much of an impact anymore (hello spicy food!). Here is what made the difference for me, keeping in mind its different for everybody. Loose weight, gets better every pound I loose. Stick to your meds, don't be afraid to take more (per your doctor) to take the edge off. Eat and drink everything in small amounts. Avoid trigger foods, with the hope you can eat them again someday. I only drink water now, very little amounts, all day long. I cut everything else, coffee, soda, alcohol, ect. Being hydrated made such a difference to how I felt. Stopped late night eating, which helped with those midnight chest pains. All the best through this process, I hope you find healing paths very soon.

Whatever the doctor tells you to do, do it. I had undiagnosed GERD (treated heartburn with OTC stuff) and ended up in the hospital with severe anemia because of the small bleeds the erosion caused. I am now symptomless, but I do take a prescription omeprazole daily. Losing weight and not eating heavy foods before bed has helped too.

ETA: in general, I eat more frequent smaller meals
