So what do you do at the gym??

My work friend and I signed up to the gym two weeks ago. We had a free personal training session where we focused on using some of the weights machines and worked on our legs and abs a bit, which was interesting to see how the machines worked.

After that I went to a body attack class and some zumba classes because I enjoyed them. I'd also like to try out body pump and maybe yoga at some point.

I am currently at 9 stone 1lb, at 5ft4 which is a healthy weight, but would like to improve my body shape, and lose a little bit of weight. From what I've read I should be incorporating some weights into my fitness?

What would you suggest I do at the gym when I go? I currently enjoy going to zumba and would like to keep going to some body pump/attack classes but when it comes to using the gym I don't know what to do!!

    I pick things up.

and then I put them down.

And if I have time I walk up endless flights of stairs.

    And that's about it.

Thanks, I guess I'm going to have to go towards some kind of lifting then, bit out of my comfort zone but if its what works then I'm happy to try it :)

I lift weights? I'm not sure what you're looking for here but if you're looking for specifics, this week for me will be:

    Mon: Back/Abs
    Tues: Shoulders/Legs
    Wed: Tri's/Abs
    Thurs: Bi's/Legs
    Fri: Chest/Abs

I just got a new yoga workout (DDP Yoga) and I'm going to start that this week -- today actually at some point -- and will be incorporating that Mon/Wed/Friday. I also (hope to) bike or run Tues/Thursday this week (I have been lax on my cardio lately).

A good website that gives a lot of information about lifting including some programs is EXRX.NET. It has beginners workouts and lots of information for beginners. That is my go-to website when I'm looking for new exercises.

Thanks, I'm not sure if I could do 5 days a week just yet, I'm only just getting the motivation to go to the gym :P I would just rather my workout count towards changing my body instead of going and being stuck on the elliptical cos I don't know what to actually do, hency why the classes have been good because someone just tells me what to do haha.

I shall look at the website, beginners is where I'm at, so any info on starting is great (without forking out even more money than I already have to pay for gym!)
    Thanks everyone

I started with the beginners strength training routine at aworkoutroutine.com. I liked the setup and definitely progressed with it.

I go through the entire routine the trainer showed me at my introduction to the gym....2-3 times a week and it only takes like 1/2 hr - 45 minutes. At least this way I know I'm doing the right things :)

I second the New Rules series by Rachael and Alwyn Cosgrove. Look for somewhere that offers HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) You get lifting AND cardio in one shot, and most people see results in 3 days/week at one hour per session (including warm up).

Thanks for everyones input, would classes like metafit/insanity count as HIIT? My work friend wants to go to those classes, so I could try those as well? I'm about to head off to the gym soon but thanks again for some new ideas for future work outs :D

The thing that will make the biggest change. Continue to go. :) Seriously, if I had never stopped I would be in amazing shape right now. Wouldn't we all.
