Exercise whilst sick

Hi guys; I have an internal battle going on inside my head - I have a very very sore throat, to the point where, even with painkillers its sore to swallow. My ears are sore, and my glands up, in my neck. But I don't have a fever and don't feel particularly weak, just a bit more tired than usual.
I have not exercised all weekend, as I have felt that I should probably rest a bit to try and get over this bug asap; but tonight is a major gym night for me. I would normally do my 4 sets of compound lifts and then a 45 min spin class. I feel like I am really starting to lose the routine of going, and need to get into it asap, but I am not sure if I should wait til I am better.
Thoughts and advice please...!!

Take care of yourself first. Workout another time.
I'm a cancer survivor. There were 6 months out of 2012 that I could not workout. It sucks, but that's life. A big part of training is mental.0 -
I would put the intense workout aside until you are better. Try taking a gentle walk or something if you feel the need to get some activity in.0

Work out at home or outside but skip the gym. Not cool to expose everyone at the gym to whatever you have. Feel better soon!0

I had the exact same symptoms last week.
Decided to go to the gym anyway as it was the start of the week. Worst idea, ever. I managed 9 minutes on the elliptical then nearly vomited and passed out because raising my heart rate gave me such a high temperature.
Look after yourself. Get better first. It's ok.0 -
Even without a fever, it's possible that your body is fighitng an infection or some sort of virus. Either way, not a good idea to add more stress with an intense workout. If it was me, after a week of having a sore throat and ears, I'd go to the clinic to get checked out. Especially sore ears bother me horribly after a bad experience in my teens (sudden onset, horrid pain, bad reaction to meds).
If I absolutely HAD to exercise to keep my sanity, I might still do the weights (but be careful as ear congestion may mess with your balance) but either skip the cardio or do something light. Instead of your spin class, sit on the stationary bike and do a moderate program. Or go for a walk. And definitely listen to your body. If you've feeling woozy, stop immediately and go home.
Also, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and eating well. Your body needs the extra fluids and nutrients!
Get well soon.0 -
Probably best to rest. If your feeling that poorly then listen to your body. If you over do things when your I'll you can make yourself worse and recovery will take longer. Also, if you go to the gym when your I'll you will pass on your germs to other people... Rest and then get back into it when you feel better :-)0

REST! All that energy you would be using whilst exercising, your body needs to help fight off whatever bugs you have.
All that exercise will still be there for you once you are recovered and unless you are training for an event in the very near future (marathon etc.) then I doubt taking a few days off will affect you in the long run.
Personally I'm a fan of taking a break from your routine every now and again anyway, it helps me mentally to maintain my focus and enthusiasm.0 -
Thanks for all of your replies, you have set my mind at ease that I am not just 'being lazy' and it is the sensible thing to do! Having had a busy day with my 5 yr old and 2 dog walks anyway (my job is a dog walker), I am feeling pooped now anyway. Nice bath later and that'll be me done!!
Hopefully I can kick this soon so I can get back into the swing of it asap :-)0 -

Sounds like strep throat.
In that case get yourself to a doctor and do not, for the love all things good, go to the gym and infect everyone around you.0 -
i read somewhere that when your body is fighting off a virus, you can eat and drink what you want and you wont gain any weight.
dont know if this is true or not. regardless, skip the workout and get better.0 -

Not true.
More accurate to say that depending on how sick you are, you may be burning more calories than normal when you're healing. Almost certainly not as many as you burn in a gym session, though. Little enough that I wouldn't try to compensate. I also wouldn't be at all concerned if I ate more than maintenance, either, for a couple of days. That can be burned off again after you're well.
Rest up, take care of yourself and get well, OP.0 -
Try some light activity to see if it helps your feel better/distracts you from your illness? Fine.
Exercise? Absolutely not. Get healthy first.0 -
lizchic82... give it a rest for a day and make it up another. However, find a good steam room and sit in there for a bit. They are always great for beating an illness. Best of luck.0

You need a strep test. It doesn't always come with fever or feeling very sick.
And rest. Why do people think they need to "push through" illness?0
