Is Vegas a Family Vacation Destination?

What's up with all the families taking their kids on vacation in Vegas?

Just got back. There were so many Families with their kids there. Stayed at the Monte Carlo. Couldn't believe how many kids were there.

It's not a place for children. They can't go out in the Casino's or see many of the shows, so do they get stuck in the room at night?

It's very expensive. Aren't there some better family-friendly destinations?

Remember "What happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas"?

Kick the kids out of the Casino Hotels. Adults Only !!!

I wouldn't take my kids there. There's too much excess... It's just not a good environment for them... Is nothing sacred anymore???? LOL! No kids in Vegas!

About the only place they can hang out is by the pool. But, as evening rolls around, the single adults are getting drunker and rowdier and the music is getting raunchier.

Plus, going to Vegas when you turn 21 is a rite of passage.

Wish it was adults only on the Strip and Downtown.

We took our kids to Vegas in April - I regret it. My oldest son is 13 and I saw him take notice of all the smut magazine machines and the enormous dial-a-hooker advertising truck we got next to in a turn lane. Even though we stayed on the outskirts of "The Strip" most of the time it was not a good decision to take them there. It was my first time there in 12+ years and I didn't remember it being so bad. It won't happen again!

I noticed that there were a lot of families even when I went about 10 years ago. You're right, it's not really a family destination but there are plenty of shows and places that are kid friendly also... not that the rest of us like it that way. Personally, I'd be afraid to bring kids there considering the hotel bars turn into street corners at night where you can buy just about anything.

Definitely not a family friendly place! I went there last year for a convention. I did see a few kids and I was shocked! I definitely wouldn't take my kids there. Like you said OP, the only real thing they can do is the pool.

Agreed - i wouldn't take my kids to Vegas. I saw a Mom and her kids going by me and she was telling her 5 year old son (approx) to not look at the ground - its where all the naked women cards were. Not sure what they were thinking..... and Circus Circus is probably the biggest dump on the strip.

I was actually shocked at how many kids there are. I would never even think about taking my kids to Vegas. I monitor what they watch on TV at home, what internet sites they use, why would I throw them in the middle of an adult playground?

And honestly, if I'm going to Vegas, I do not want to be responsible for anyone but myself!

No way on Earth! I wouldn't take my girls there! In fact I felt so intimidated and vulnerable walking along the strip at night and I am an adult!

I've seen people take their kids to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, too. To each their I guess, but I would rather not have to explain the hooker/pimp relationship to my children for a while longer.

I disagree. Vegas is more than the Strip. I took my family there and we went to the Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon and the Grand Canyon. Downtown Vegas has a lot of family friendly activities as well. There are many places to stay off the strip that are family friendly.

Thought exactly the same when I was there in March. When I noticed families on the plane I just assumed that they were just flying into Vegas and then travelling on, but was surprised to see how many were on the strip. I stayed in the Luxor and there was some shows for the kids to see, but the pool area wasn't kid friendly and nothing for them to do in the evening

We go out west regularly and our Phoenix family members inevitably want to go to Vegas for a few days. I don't understand the kids and strollers on The Strip. Unavoidably, there are drunk people, folks with the little "Stripper MVP Cards" littering the sidewalks with nearly nude pics, and it's just not an environment I'd want my child in, if I'd had children of my own.

That said, my husband did take my stepson there when he was in grade school (he's 24 now), but since our family knows the area well, anything family friendly (staged Pirate fight at Treasure Island, arcades, rides, etc.) was scoped out in advance and that particular trip just didn't involve bars or casino areas.

There SO many amazing vacation destinations out there for families with little ones...I say pick somewhere else for Family Time!

Of course there are places that are appropriate for kids, but that's not what I am talking about.

We met up with a guy I was in the Marine Corps 42 years ago. He had a new gal in his life with 2 kids. They were 14 and 8 year old boys. So they got to spend all evening in a Hotel Room while the 4 of us took in a show and dinner.

Personally, when I go on vacation with my kids it's to spend time with my kids, not leave them unattended in a Casino hotel Room.

About 20 years ago I went with my parents and my older sister and little brother. That was when they were trying to make it a "family friendly" destination and every hotel/casino had arcades and other things for kids to do. I think that fell to the wayside pretty quick because they make a TON more money off the debauchery. Now the only place that really still has stuff for kids that I remember last time is Circus Circus. But I think that will always be there unless it finally falls down.

Man, now I want to go back to Vegas...it's been 13 years since the last time I was there!

I though I was the only one that felt this way!
Kids can go to Disney Land!
However there were very few kids at the Mirage, I just got back from there and it was great.

Since reports are showing that business is down in Vegas they have been trying for years to come up with new ways of attracting customers. Many casinos out East are closing too. Vegas is not a place to bring your children. It is and should be an Adult environment. When I visited in April on the weekend, I was unhappy about all the younger people from California who looked like gang members who just hung around the Strip at night. They tended to look for young girls from out of town to harass...openly. There were nightly fights and police action. Lots of drunk people which I get tired of putting up with. Sloppy drunks are a pain. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a beer or some wine myself. Next time, I will avoid the weekend.

I think parents who bring their kids on a vacation in Vegas are just being selfish. It's not really fair to the kids or other guests who are there to get wild. It always surprises me when I see kids in the casino hotels and on the strip - I just don't get it. Wouldn't it be way more fun for your kids to go hiking in Yosemite or something?!

    AGREED OP!

I went back in April 2012 for my Sister's Wedding (and yes she's still married to this day) and was AMAZED at the number of families I saw in our hotel, New York New York - sure there's an arcade & the roller coaster, but I still wouldn't take my kids to Vegas. Not in a million years, just not a good place for kids! Not only would they be bored senseless, but there's just too much that they shouldn't be exposed to.

My kids loved collecting all the hooker collectible cards the jerks on the drag were handing out to everyone. The aggressive costumed "characters" and panhandlers only furthered the charm.
  • I'm not bringing my kids there until they are old enough to drink and gamble with me. It's not that you can't have a fun family vacation there, but why would someone chose to when there are much better family friendly places to go. Drinking, gambling, and debauchery are best kept at a good distance from impressionable minds.

no Vegas is not for kids, lots of people pushing hookers, and panhandling, very aggressive people dressed like batman etc that don't take no for an answer...they have nothing to do but circus circus....and circus circus sucks

I will also agree with the chorus, Vegas is not great for children. I can't even imagine how parents with strollers navigate all those stairs!

My husband stayed one night in Vegas on his way to Arizona to pick up our Savannah. He told me about busses that would drive up and down the strip advertising prostitution, people handing out pamphlets and papers for "girls" and the streets littered with these advertisements. I would agree...Vegas is NOT an appropriate place for children.

Would NOT take my kids to Vegas. In order to enjoy anything "Vegas" has to offer, you'd have to be of age, I think.
I went for the first time and the highlight of my trip was seeing "Thunder from down under"

I loooove Vegas, but can't stand seeing kids on the strip. I'd like to swear and drink as I please without an annoyed parent giving me dirty looks, thank you very much.

I was there in May and we went down to Stratosphere to go on the rides. Decided to check out Circus Circus on the way back - big mistake. Such a dive, and kids EVERYWHERE. I literally tripped over a small child in a darker area whose mother was not paying attention. Nope. Don't need to go back to that creepy place ever again.

Vegas is an ADULT playground. Take the kiddies elsewhere.
