When are you white people going to figure out that you run away from the weird noises and don't go investigating?

    ^^ nailed it.

The tired brain really can play tricks on you.

    Yes.

The other night I woke up when it felt like someone tapped me on the shoulder. Thinking it was my husband waking me up to go to the gym I rolled over and looked over at the door and for a split second thought I saw some disfigured, faceless thing standing in front of the closed door.

Nope. I was just tired and hadn't fully opened my eyes.

I'm not saying I don't believe in ghosts. My sister-in-laws house is "haunted" by the farm couple who lived there. She has two pictures where you can clearly see the woman standing in the upstairs window and in the second one the man. They also have weird stuff happening every now and then (I think it's calmed down a bit now) like shoes disappearing then reappearing some time later.

When I was 13, we moved into an old farmhouse right beside an orange grove. A year later, a man in a white corvette came by looking for someone who used to live in the house. I told him that the person no longer lived there, and he left. A couple days later, a police officer showed up at the door to ask me if I knew the person, indicating that he was wanted for harming someone who used to live in my house, and that if he came back I should call the police immediately. When I was 15 or 16, I was shooting pool with a couple of friends that we had over, and I made an off-hand remark about it, and to spook my friend, I lied and told him the man killed a 2-year-old boy in the house and that the house was haunted. I almost immediately felt a sharp pain in my right shoulder that put me on the floor, screaming. I was freaking out, and we went into the bathroom to look at my shoulder. I had four fingernail scratches running up my collar bone and up to my shoulder in the front, and one in the back along the top of my scapula. The only people in the pool room were me, my sister, and my friend who came over to shoot pool. It wasn't the wee hours of anything, it was about 7 pm at night, and I didn't harm myself. I never made jokes about baby killers again because whatever scratched me didn't appreciate it. There was also an incident when I was 16. A boyfriend painted me a picture called "The Bloody Knife" that I hung on my bedroom wall. One night I was laying down to go to sleep, and the thing flew off the wall, traveled 9 or so feet, and landed behind my 7 foot tall 1970s-style bedroom dresser. I threw that painting away and told whatever caused it that I was sorry. That house scared the crap out of me.

When I was 19, I was sitting at home alone in my living room and heard my grandmother call for me from the bedroom. She was in the hospital, so I called the hospital and learned that she had died 15 minutes earlier.

When I was going through a rough time as a kid, I used to see my dad sitting at the foot of my bed at night. He was always wearing his uniform and patting my shin. It never frightened me, and I saw him at least a dozen times. He died when I was 4.

I don't know whether I believe my own BS, but thinking about all this gives me the shivers.

U R smrt. As much as I love a good ghost story, it makes me sad when I hear of someone letting irrational fear prevent them from living their lives the way they want to.

I was in my basement a month or so back, doing laundry, when I swear up and down I heard someone whisper my name. Adrenaline rushed into my limbs and they went ice-water cold. I casually finished my laundry and ran up the stairs. When I had to go back down to flip/flop the laundry I was actually a little frightened. Then I thought to myself, "Girl, James Randi would be so ashamed of you right now!" And that reminded me of what I know is true about logic and science and I got over myself. :)

James Randi will save us all.

Did you pick up on the girl on page two with the long, detailed story..that eventually ended with her being an actress in some upcoming webseries on ghosts? :noway:

Honey, the webseries is an LBGT themed and in NO WAY associated with the paranormal group we were involved with and/or co-founded 11 years ago. I don't *think* I implied the webseries was paranormal, anyway? If I did, I certainly apologize.

Perhaps, you didn't read and see that we took a scientific approach to investigating- we didn't just go in and say "Lord, Jesus, we got us a haunting!" every time someone called us and asked for an investigation, and put on a grand show. No. It doesn't work that way. There were many places we investigated client requested, and freelance that simply, there was nothing there. Nothing. We didn't pretend there was something there if it wasn't to make someone feel better. However, if we did find something, we put it to the test.

As for their being "proof of ghosts" of course there isn't. We can't "prove" without a doubt any deity exists, either, despite having Holy texts and documents, and millions of believers and/or followers of various faiths/religions throughout the world.

Ghosts/spirits fall into the realm of the paranormal, and obviously, are unexplained. It's something, you either believe, or you don't. Those who do, are trying by trial and error to prove, and for those who don't, no amount of proof will prove otherwise to them.

My father died when I was 3. He visited me at night for awhile. It stopped by the time I was 7.

I've got one for Brett to solve with his Mystery Machine and talking Great Dane.

I grew up in area that was part of Sherman's march during the Civil War. At night, you could see flashes of light that came from a source that seemed to hover off the ground. Many, many people have seen it on many, many occassions. What clever logic do you think explains that?

    Genuinely curious...

    you-calling-me-a-liar.jpg

Never darling. But if you CAN prove it you can win a million dollars. And I try never to believe anything someone can't prove.

I wish I could prove it. It didn't occur to me what it was until the third time I heard the crash in the kitchen. There was literally, I mean literally, no way the lunch boxes could have fallen over without someone physically knocking them off. My daughter was in my room with me, and we were the only ones home. The story is at the bottom of this page. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/745954-ghosts-spirits-unexplainable-happenings?page=4 Is there really a website?

So funny, this is how it happens. You get the idea in your head, and suddenly there are ghosts everywhere.

A mouse or rat could have knocked the lunchboxes over. Strong gust of wind. Even a sudden shift in the Earth is a more believable explanation than the spirits of dead people existing and taking corporeal form momentarily just to knock over a few lunchboxes.

Most of the things you "saw" were in the middle of the night while you were sleeping. Those are dreams/your imagination upon waking up.

The only reason you thought the tapping noise you heard was a ghost is because someone told you beforehand, "there's a ghost that makes noises." So after that any noise you heard would of course be a ghost. Hearing tapping, random noises, that happens to everyone. Houses settle, boards creek, etc. It isn't proof that after death we become spirits that exist independent of our bodies and occasionally make random sounds. It's just random sounds. With a thousand rational explanations that make more sense.

I don't have mice or rats, and no windows that open in my kitchen. It happened 3 times, waiting until I was seated to happen again, and coincidentally stopped after I yelled at it? It was the fact that it stopped after I yelled that had me convinced that's what it was. I have a picture of my ex's cousin in my house. She does readings, and I kept taking pictures hoping to catch an orb, but got nothing. Then I said maybe she needs to invite them to get in the picture, so she did, and when I took the next picture there were two orbs to her right. I may not be able to convince you, but I'm convinced!

Ghosts are a normal part of my life. I've never seen one but my kid used to talk to them. Now as a preteen he says he just sees the shadows and they bug him sometimes, but most of the times he ignores them.

My daughter does this too. She hasn't outgrown it. I've suggested that she ignore them, but she says that they just try harder to get her attention.

I've tried to self induce sleep paralysis a couple times but it is *kitten* HARD. theres a series of steps and the last one is to be perfectly still for a half hour to an hour, you cant even move your eyes.

My daughter used to talk to a girl named Jessica when she was little. She has no memory of it now. When my ex's cousin was at the house, Jessica talked to her. She said she came from the cemetery behind my house because she was bored.

At my dad's old house, which is close to a civil war burial site, there was a woman who used to pass in front of the doorway to the front bedroom on the first floor. She was wearing a Gone With the Wind type dress. That's all she ever did, though, was pass by that doorway. Never looked at them or bothered anything.

Ugh, I hate sleep paralysis. It's not a comfortable feeling. Not as scary as some others though. I used to occasionally wake up to the sensation that something was trying to pull me out of my body through my feet. That was a bit freaky.

When we first moved into our 1790 colonial my daughter wanted to know who the 'grey people' in the hall were. 'They just stand by the bathroom & won't talk to me.'

She had me sick to my stomach when she got me up one night to show them to me.

Long Story Short; She'd been trying to talk to her shadow(s). The nightlights in the kitchen & classroom threw 2 shadows from her to the wall at the end of the hall.

I'm embarrassed to admit I was horrified for a few seconds before I realized what I was seeing. The tired brain really can play tricks on you.

OMG thank god you figured out what it was, that just scared the heck out of me until I read what it was!!

Sorry my intent wasn't to scare you but to illustrate how easily we can be spooked.

If you do have a window that whistles with the wind you probably tune out the sound most of the time. You were alone in the dark & tired, the human imagination can be a powerful adversary.

Thanks for the entertaining post, now get out there and enjoy your workout!

Oh my god, worst experience ever.

I'm on a medication that gives me sleep paralysis far more often than I am comfortable with. It is literally the most terrifying experience I've ever had, every single time.

OK, Brett, do this one now! That's some freaky shniz, Ginger.

I don't think I should continue trying to debunk things, people don't enjoy it. Usually because the truth is something like, "You didn't hear/see what you thought you did/You're remembering wrong/You're lying."

Case in point you said you don't have mice/rats. There aren't many homes where it's an impossibility that mice or rats can get in. To rule that out as a possibility but to believe that the dead have risen, are invisible to the human eye, and spend their time knocking over lunchboxes until someone asks them not to...

Sorry, I gotta go with mice over that explanation.

I was honestly curious about how you would explain it. Although, that would have to be a really strong mouse, and I can promise you I don't have rats. It was two lunch boxes and two mini igloo coolers sitting on top of a flat top Coleman, backed up to a wall and the end of a counter, so blocked in on two sides. All 4 were knocked onto the floor. I would prefer it to be the earth moving. :flowerforyou:

Ok so its 5:30AM I'm up first and my husband and daughter are still snoozing. I fumble around in the dark for my workout gear and head down stairs to the first floor. My dog follows. I'm sitting on the couch sipping water trying to wake up and the house is dead silent. Its pitch black outside..Then I hear it....it sounded like my daughter yawning....at first, then it kept up. Sounded like breathing, and close. I stood up and looked up the stairs, thinking maybe my husband is trying to scare me. I stand there and wait, I hear it again. At this point i'm getting pretty freaked out. My dog is too. She's looking up the stairs and then starts barking. I decide to check it out. I head up and flip the light on and stand there and nothing. I head into my daughters room (at this point I'd known it wasn't her) and she's sound asleep. Head to the bedroom and hubby is sleeping. So I'm like WTF!?

I've wasted like 15 min of precious workout time at this point walking/standing around my house like a nutcase but I know what I heard, and the dog heard it too. There has to be some reasonable explanation but I haven't figured it out.

I'm a little freaked out guys. I hope I have the nerve to get up for the AM workout again tomorrow :-/

Might be due to something called infrasound - low frequency sounds that can sometimes produce odd sensations and feelings.
