I made oatmeal for my son and I this morning. I used 1-3/4 cups of milk (that made 2 servings). after it was cooked I split it in half. He hate his half, and then half of mine. So I only ate 1/4 of the oatmeal made. So how much is half, of half, of 1-3/4?! lol

Im asking if you have 1-3/4 of somethng and you split it in half, and then split one of those halves, in half again, what is it?

Not sure what you're asking but half of 1.75 is .875. Does that help? Sorry!

You ate 7/16 of a cup, which is not a very pretty fraction, haha. The decimal is .4375 so you can probably enter it in like that, or round it off.
    Hope that helps!

I think it is a little less than 1/2 cup. Not by much, would just round up to 1/2 cup. I usually look at the ounces 1 3/4c would be 14 ounces, 1/2 would be 7, and half of that would be 3.5 which is close to 1/2 cup. Hope this is close, I hate fractions too! lol
  • Turn it in to decimals. 1 3/4 is 1.75 / 2= .88 .88 / 2= .44 (rounded up)

1 and 3/4 cups equals 14 ounces. 1/4 of that is 3.5 ounces
  • Thank you!

.4375 - you ate just under 1/2 cup

    1.75/4 = .4375

    I usually ask my wife.......
  • If you divide 1.75 by 3 it comes to .58

This is so amusing to see the different ways people try to handle math!

    To make it easy on you take it out of a mixed fraction: 1 cup = 4/4 cup + 3/4cup = 7/4 you then had 1/4 (1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4) of what you made so multiply by 1/4: 7/4 x 1/4 = 7/16. (Remember you multiply across)

Just under half a cup like others have said. And now you have ways of dealing with fractions!

    Math isn't that bad! :)
  • Ok, it's not too hard and I am a teacher so I should know this.

1 3/4 is the same as 7/4. You divide that by 2 so you get 7/4 divided by 2 or 2/1. When you divide a fraction by another fraction you invert the second fraction and multiply. Now you have 7/4 x 1/2 = 7/8. (You just straight multiply across.)
Now you divided that 7/8 in half again so you you have 7/8 divided by 2/1. Cross multiply and now you have 7/8 x 12 = 7/16.
Well, 7/16 is not an easy fraction to work with so now you can round up to 8/16 or round down to 7/14. Either way, 8/16 = 1/2 and 7/14 =1/2. Best estimate is 1/2.
You could have started out by rounding the 1 3/4 up to 2. Then you would have still ended up with a quantity of 1/2, the same rounded up quantity as when you went through all the math above. So, when in doubt, round it up. It will end up saving you time performing math calculations and you'll save a few calories too.
    I hope this helps you
  • I would just devide the cals up but by serving.... 1 3/4 = 1.75 so 1.75 devided by 4 (3 for your son and one for you) = .4375 or .44

Convert to decimal and work from there I find is easiest. 1-3/4 = 1.75. 1.75 divided by 4 = 0.4375 (just under 1/2)

Sheesh. Just round it up to half a cup, I say.

I teach math as well. Why don't you just put in that you ate .25 of 1 3/4 cup of oatmeal? The computer does the math for you. You ate 1/4 of the oatmeal, right? Much easier that way.....
