10lbs in 1 month

Options
Hello,

So I'm pretty desperate because I've been trying to lose weight for the last 2 years and I'm stuck at 140. I lost 20lbs when I got sick and then it slowly went back to 140 (I was on steroid which explained the rapid weight gain). Since that I try the 10 days diet detox but I only lost water weight so I gained everything back. I tried the juice diet which worked I lost 13lbs and after I reintroduce food I only gained 3-4lbs which was probably the weight of the food that I was eating + the water weight. Now it's been a couple of weeks that my weight is going up and my body fat percentage too. I usually eat pancakes made out of plantain and coconut flour for breakfast with some protein, a salad for lunch with protein, vegetables and protein for dinner I also eat 1/4 cup of nuts everyday. I tried to reduce my carbs, I'm planning on avoiding nuts. I don't know what to do, losing weight is hard for me but then when I lose weight it is hard to keep the weight off and it's even harder to not gain... I'm actually following the paleo diet for my autoimmune disease and it is suppose to be a way to lose weight without effort... -_- Any advice? Thanks

Do a combo of counting calories and paleo. Eat paleo, but make sure to keep within your calorie goals for the day. MFP can let you know the amount of calories you should eat, or you can do the TDEE method.

    Here's a calculator: https://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/calories-to-lose-weight

You can also use the Scooby Doo TDEE calculator.

Visit iifym.com and it will explain everything about TDEE and it also has a calculator.

Well, the thing about paleo is that we are not suppose to count calories because all we eat is protein, vegetables, healthy fats, and fruits.. I try to cut out on fruit and nuts. I'm getting my healthy fats from oil, coconut meat, and olives. I might eat more than 1500 calories but it is coming from healthy food and according to Paleo articles it does not matter unless I was eating very big meals 3-4 times a day but I'm not.. Even though I might eat more than 1500 calories, how can I gain 10 lbs in 4 weeks by eating that?? I'd need to eat like 7000 extra calories every week to do so..And this week I went back to school so there are two days for lunch I had a homemade green juice some nuts and a Larabar which is a bar made out of nuts, dates, and fruits..

The paleo theory that it doesn't matter how much you eat is just nonsense. No matter how/what you eat you still need to eat at a calorie deficit to lose weight. That's just science

So set a reasonable/sensible calorie limit eat within that and you'll lose weight. The thread will help

Paleo or any other type of diet, you still need a calorie deficit to lose weight. You can still gain weight on healthy food if you eat too much of it. Count calories and create a modest deficit. Also read the thread _Zardoz_ posted.

Trying to lose 10 lb in a month is part of the reason you're failing.

Set yourself up for a small loss (0.5 lb or 1 lb a week) - slow and steady wins the race :)

Set yourself up for a small loss (0.5 lb or 1 lb a week) - slow and steady wins the race :)

    This.

You're going about the whole thing completely wrong.

First of all, all diets are designed to make you FAIL. They are gimmicks.

The #1 rule you cannot fool is calories in vs. calories out.

It takes 3500 calories burned to lose a pound of fat (and as we all know, your body doesn't just lose fat when this happens, it takes muscle with it). So think about that for a minute: how difficult do you think it would be to create a weekly deficit of 3,500 calories?

That's a deficit, each day, of 500 calories.

Four weeks in a month. If you could create a 3,500 calorie deficit per week, you'd lose 4 lbs in a month.

And that is the slow, steady, and proper way to lose the weight. It's not water weight then - it's just fat and muscle (and you can prevent some of the muscle loss with strength training).

So, for starters, stop with the fad diets. Clearly they don't work; they're designed to make you lose water weight and create an unhealthy relationship with food.

Second, start eating foods you enjoy, at calorie limits that will create a slight deficit for you.

Third, start moving. Exercise. It can be as simple as walking. Use the exercise to help create that 500-calorie-per-day deficit you need to lose a pound a week.

And then put a 16 oz bottle of water in your hand and feel how heavy it is. Remind yourself: this is what comes off your body every week if you follow the deficit plan.

It can be done. But realistically, not from some fantasy unicorn and rainbow fad diet. You don't need to juice, or starve yourself, or adhere to some ridiculous cult-like diet regimen.

This^ AND stop with the fads. Caloric deficit = weight loss. Patience!

It isn't a coincident that all of the fast weight loss fat burning gimmicks you have tried failed. Therefore, stop with this type of thinking. Read the sexypants link provided to you and follow the recommendations made about slowly losing the weight.

Okay I stop you right there. I don't want to lose 10 lbs in a month I GAINED 10lbs in a month and I'm saying that I coulcn't eat an extra 7000 calories each week by eating what I eat... Please read before to start saying things like that I know 10lbs in a month is hard to lose but my problem is that I gained those 10lbs... I also want to say that the juice diet was not a fad diet it was a reboot and most of people who gain the weight back are those who went back to their bad eating habits. I know a lot of people judge the juice diet but it is actually a good thing to do because you are filling your body with good nutrients. The only bad diet I had it was when I was desperately counting my calories trying to get 900-1200 calories a day. Counting my calories makes me stressed and I'm not trying to plan my food dairy in the morning and start worrying about every single piece of food I'm gonna put in my mouth during the day to not go over 1500 cal.

Here is an article about the "calorie in/ calorie out hypothesis": http://paleoleap.com/all-about-calories-1/

Are you weighing and measuring all your foods? Logging your intake? Because likely the 10 lbs is not all fat, some of it is water weight. But you could easily gain weight eating what you are eating. Paleo isn't magic, if you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight.

Well I'm running, I try to go to the gym once per week to lift weights but last week I haven't had time to workout but I guess a few days without working out does not explain a 10lbs weight gain over a month...

That is correct - missing a few workouts will not explain a 10lbs monthly weight gain. BUT... If you are not measuring, weighing and logging your food, THAT can explain a 10lb weight gain. If you don't know how many calories you are consuming, you don't know if you are in a caloric deficit, regardless of your exercise, which if the ONLY thing that results in weight loss.

Slow and steady will win the race! be patient and you will have long term success rather than a quick temporary fix

I read that your muscles can retain fluid. And there's also water retention in general. Your metabolism could be a bit messed up. I know mine is from having radiation but it is slowly starting to work better (not normally but better). Like the poster just before me said, it's slow and steady but eventually we will get there. It just may be more difficult for some people whose systems may be a but more screwed up. Don't give up ... I did when I have gained weight and was about 140 lbs and that only resulted in me going up to 190 lbs because I gave up trying to get to my gw of 110. This time I'm in the race for good, as a lifestyle change. I know it will take time. I hope you stick with it, and not give up. Take care.
