    here is a link to the pasta fusilli packet that i've been speaking about

    http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/37484

    Okay it says "cooked" so let's go with that. That makes sense in terms of the calorie count as well.

    So one packet of 500g of fusilli pasta states;
    (as directly cooked)(on hob) 100g per serving gives around 156 calories

    Another packet of fusili pasta 500g states;
    as sold per 75g gives around 270calories

    Why is this the case? Obviously the second case refers to dry pasta. so when i log pasta into my diary do i log it as dry/raw pasta or cooked pasta?

    Use the package information for the package that you bought.

    Go to the database and type in ASDA fusilli pasta. Choose the one that matches your package-- I found it easily. Add that to your log. Cook your pasta. Weigh out 100 grams. Eat.

    Yeah that's the method that i have been using. However i've done a bit of research and there's a big difference between Asda pasta fusilli and morrisons pasta fusilli 500g. Look here;
    So one packet of 500g of fusilli pasta states;

    ASDA - http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/37484
    (156calories per 100g)

    MORRISONS - http://groceries.morrisons.com/webshop/product/Morrisons-Fusilli/114201011?from=shop&tags=|105651|102705|102605|102623&parentContainer=|102705|102605|102623_SHELFVIEW

    No, checking both of those, they're pretty comparable. The Morrison's one is 162 per 100 grams of cooked pasta. vs. 156 for the ASDA one.

    This is not normal for the UK either, I swear!

    Are you reading all the nutrition information on the packet?

    Sometimes it has a bit on the front (traffic light display thing) which just has calories per portion. That might be for cooked weight sometimes.

    But on the back you get the grid which shows more detailed information. That will normally have a list of numbers for 100g dry weight, and maybe a different list based on whatever they think is one serving.

    I would weigh the amount of pasta you plan to eat (I'd go for 75g if it's to top with a sauce as the main part of your meal, less if it's a side dish) and input that. So put in the data for 100g, then for "number of servings", type in 0.75.

    I always weigh how much pasta I'm cooking. But if I'm cooking for 2 I would weigh out 150g and just divide it in half by eye - it might be a little bit different (I might accidentally eat 80g instead of 75) but I couldn't accidentally serve myself 100g of pasta and give my boyfriend only 50g!

    How can there be such stark differences between these two products? for some reason i'm still suspicious about Asda's fusilli pasta (100g can only contain 156 calories? even i don't believe it, yet it states on the packet
    100 grams of cooked pasta is a fairly tiny portion.

    If you don't trust it call the manufacturer. I've done it for ice cream before, when it didn't list the grams amount on the package.

    The Morrison's one says this:
    A 180g serving of cooked pasta (approx. 75g dry pasta) provides... Calories 292 15%, Sugar 0.7g 0.8%, Fat 1.3g 1.9%, Saturates 0.2g 1%, Salt trace of your guideline daily amount.

    If you ate 180 grams of the ASDA you'd get 280 calories. It's very close.

    Usually, the numbers in the nutrition label are for dry pasta. A common serving size is 56g dry pasta. How much it is when cooked hinges on how much water it absorbs which can be affected by the ingredients in the pasta, the shape, and how long you cook it. I find weighing out servings of pasta before throwing it in the water is an easy way to make the right amount of pasta.

    This!!!

    I see now where you're coming from. Another pasta fusilli packet from ALDI - states that 75g of uncooked pasta is around 269 calories - this really equates to around 180g of cooked pasta, right? dont' get me started on quinoa, or rice haha.

    More or less, yes. But we'd caution that it's more accurate to weigh 75 grams out before it's cooked. Or, if you're going to cook the whole package, weigh it before cooking to make sure it actually weighs what it's labeled, cook it, then weigh it after cooking, and portion it accordingly. It takes a little bit of math, but you get used to it eventually.

    They probably use slightly different ratios of ingredients. Use the one you bought. You are overthinking this.

    I had the same question so I looked it up and it said by law nutrition is listed as the way it was when it went into the box, i.e. Dry. So if you cook 56 grams it will weigh more after cooking but the nutritional value is unchanged

    How is there ANY difference?

    The ASDA pasta you list, from your link, is "cooked as directed" 155kCal = 155 Cal per 100g of cooked as directed (i.e. prepared) product.
    The Morrisons pasta you list is 156kCal = 156 Cal per 100g as consumed (i.e. prepared) product.

    I would personally prefer to go by dry values if they were available as two people could cook things differently... but I think that 1 Cal per 100g is close enough...

    I go by dry weight then cook it and enjoy. I love pasta and noodles too. I get other types like Pasta Zero. Kroger has a reduced calorie thin pasta that is 150 caloies per 2 dry ounces.

    Pasta will always be I the range of 350-360 (ish) for raw and 150 - 160 (ish) when cooked.
