Is too much fruit bad?

Calorie deficit = weight loss. If you're caloric allowance is 1500 a day and you're eating 1550 a day in fruit, then YEP. If you stay within your allowance, it doesn't matter what you eat.
That's not true. There is a massive difference in eating 1500 calories of big macs and chips and fatty deserts than 1500 calories of bananas, pineapples, kiwis and oranges.. Calories are just a measurement not a goal. Whole foods like fruit and veg digest easier in your system and the body uses all the nutrients and burns all the excess and does this quickly. A big mac chips and fatty desserts stay in your gut and take much longer to break down and is low in nutrients and the fat is stored and not rid of straight away. Regardless if all you eat every day is 1500 calories worth of fatty, greasy heavy foods you aren't going to lose weight at least not quickly and you will be unhealthy. That is why if you eat whole fruit and vegetation you can eat without counting calories or worry about over eating because your body uses it all and doesn't store it like it does meats and salts and fats. You can eat 4000 calories a day on fruit and veg and have the weight still drop off you because whole foods digest more efficiently.0 -

Both are bad from a nutritional standpoint, but in different ways, so I guess that's a difference.
In theory, both would lead to weight loss (if maintenance was higher, as it probably is), but both would likely be hard to sustain and not lead to positive results in some other ways (depending on your goals, of course).Regardless if all you eat every day is 1500 calories worth of fatty, greasy heavy foods you aren't going to lose weight at least not quickly and you will be unhealthy.
Again, sure you will lose weight, if you are a person who can actually sustain this. (I know someone who lost weight for a while just by cutting down on the size of her primarily fast food diet--wouldn't work for me, but it did for her for a time). But of course it's not being recommended that you do so, so why bring in the silly strawman? The question here is whether if instead of eating 1500 calories with, say, below 50 grams of sugar, you eat 1500 calories with over 50 grams of sugar due to more fruit, you will fail to lose weight even though your maintenance calories are 2200, say. People seem to have this bizarre idea that if they eat above a certain level of sugar (including from fruit) that they will magically not lose weight, and thus the fear of eating "too much" fruit and not losing.
Now, of course you can eat too much fruit--eating nothing but fruit seems like too much to me--but not because you happen to end up with a few more grams of sugar than MFP gives you or some such. That is why if you eat whole fruit and vegetation you can eat without counting calories or worry about over eating because your body uses it all and doesn't store it like it does meats and salts and fats. You can eat 4000 calories a day on fruit and veg and have the weight still drop off you because whole foods digest more efficiently.
Absurd.
Granted, I don't think I could eat 4000 calories in fruit and veggies. I'd also be fat and protein deficient, among other things.0 -
I hear some people saying that eating too much fruit a day is bad, and others say there's nothing bad about that. What are your opinions on snacking on fruit all day during weight-loss? Can it really jeopardise weight-loss or is that just a myth?
Thanks.
I think everything should be eaten in moderation, even fruit. For me, it wasn't about what I was eating (I too used to eat a lot of fruit and a lot of greens)....it was more about how MUCH I was eating of them. I had to get out of the habit of eating to excess...whether it be fruit or pizza. Not everyone is me, I'm just saying why I personally can't snack on fruit all...day.0 -

ummm....no0 -
I think it depends because some fruit has more sugars than others. If you like fruit eat apples or pears, I believe those fruits had less sugars. As for bananas eat those in the morning.0

Where is your scientific evidence of this? Have you done this personally and are your results documented, Have you done a study with a control group containg a group that took placebos when compared to the other group?0 -
I'm not sure how I could lose weight eating 4000 calories of anything a day.0

What happens if you eat a banana in the afternoon? I mean, I personally turn into a gorilla, but I didn't realize that was a wide-spread thing.0 -
I love fruit. For me, personally, there's no such thing as too much.
If you're a Fruitarian, yes, that's bad. That's...well, it's more a problem of not enough other things...See? I can't even admit that fruitarians eat too much fruit,
To paraphrase Campbell's, "Fruit is good food,"0 -

i snack on fruit at least twice daily, sometimes three times. depending on the fruit it certainly puts me over my sugar and carb numbers, but i don't worry about it really. all i worry about is keeping within my calorie deficit.0

Maybe they meant 4,000 calories over the course of several days?
Without watermelon filling me up at times, I don't know how I'd make it through my cuts.0 -
I suggest checking out the 80/10/10 and the 30 Bananas A Day diets for all you fruit lovers.
I love fruit too.
Too much of anything is bad.
Even water.
And oxygen.0 -

Bananas, my favorite fruit (or berry), are off limits since my teens, when I developed an allergy to them. Please have one for me at whatever time you prefer (but peel those strings off because I never cared for them.) Thanks.0 -
Personally, I'd be far more concerned about too much fiber, than too much sugar.0
-
I think it depends on what your calorie targets are. Because my target is only 1200 calories due to my age and size, I have to be careful with certain fruits which are calorie dense, such as bananas. A banana has 105 calories, vs. a cup of strawberries that has maybe 65. If I eat more than one banana a day, I have to sacrifice some other food that might have a nutrient I need.0
-
I have heard people say before "I never saw someone get fat from fruit". I believe that is true for the most part. But I think our bodies still crave sugar, particularly when we are a little down on energy. So, if we do not fuel with the correct amount of good carbs in a day we might over do the fruit. I am a classic case, in that I am addicted to frozen mangoes and cherries. I can plow through a bag of those easily in one sitting. That is a good amount of sugar and calories. Actually, I am just as bad with fresh fruit too!0

As far as fruit, watch out for raisins. There is a lot of fructose stored up in those little things (remember each tiny raisin was once a much larger grape). So raisins, by weight, are high in calories and much of that weight is sugar.0

That's pretty much true for most dried fruits. That's why "Trail mix" is so calorie intensive.0
