ok so i added sodium to my food diary...because I noticed a lot of others were tracking their sodium levels. Despite the fact that I am usually under my calorie goal...my sodium levels are really high! should i be alarmed? should i drink more water as a result of that? how exactly does sodium levels work and effect the body? any help/advice would be great!

my diary is public so feel free to glace over my food choices and let me know where i'm going wrong!

  • I know that I track my sodium because when I eat over my allotted amount (1700mg), I tend to not lose weight, my fingers swell and I cant get my wedding rings on!

You should really ask your doctor what a healthy amount of sodium is for you.

I track it because the last several doctor's visits I have had high blood pressure and my mom has been on blood pressure meds as long as I can remember. They haven't diagnosed me with any sort of malady from it but I just want to stave it off if possible. I already take 1 med daily, would rather not have to take others for my financial well being along with my physical health.

I swell when I travel as well so I am hoping by tracking it I can figure out where that is coming from; eating out, not enough water, whatever it may be.

I have also added sodium intake to monitor (so far not doing a great job of it but working on it!). I watched Dr. Oz on Oprah about 2 wks ago and he said it really effects your over all health such as increased risks of heart disease (which is the #1 killer in the US) and for people who have hypertension (which I have) it's horrible. I also read on mayoclinic.com (search sodium) and it tells you how much sodium you really should be taking in. It's about 2500mg/day for the healthy person and 1500mg/day for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and yes African Americans (which I am). I think it's important with your health which effects your weight loss efforts. Just striving for a healthier body in 2011!

I track it as well, and even though my fat and cholesterol numbers are very low, my sodium is horrific.

The more processed a food is, changes are the higher sodium (or sugar) it'll have. The closer to nature the food is (i.e. Clean eating), the lower those numbers will be.
