What are flax seeds?

I've briefly came across things about flax seeds on the internet. I remember reading that they are healthy. So when in food lion grocery store last week and coming across them I just threw them in the cart. So now I am trying to figure out what to do with them and what types of foods to put them in. I read that it's good for fiber and healthy fats. I also read that you have to grind them before eating them.

So I guess my question is what are some of the foods you mix flax seeds in? Also please provide anything informative you may know about these flax seeds if you don't mind. It will be greatly appreciated.

    i grind them in a pestle and mortar and throw them in salads and stir fry's .. i tend to grind them with other seeds ..makes a nice nutty taste to things.

    I add a tablespoon to my cereal or salads. They are great in many different things.

    remember that you can safely eat 3 teaspoon ( or was it tablespoon?) of flax seed per day. As they have Hydrogen cyanide in there. You can made them safe with pouring hot water to grinded flax seed. Actually it's some kind of chemical reaction that you get this Hydrogen cyanide after it.

    You can spend your life chasing the latest food that someone has decided to tout as healthy, or you can learn to eat a balanced diet, satisfy your macros, and otherwise enjoy eating what you like. No food is so special that you absolutely must eat it to be healthy, nor are there very many foods out there that are so bad that you need to avoid them altogether.

    They're a good source of omega-3s, like salmon is.

    You can put it anything but I've seen it mostly in baked goods, oatmeal and maybe yogurt.

    Once ground up, the shelf life is short so consider grinding them in small batches or storing your flax meal in the freezer.
  • I pretty much eat them every day; in smoothies, in oatmeal, in baked goods (I just posted a muffin recipe on my MFP blog the other day), in meatloaf, in spaghetti sauce, on ice cream...

    I also use Flaxseed Oil and Flaxseed Butter and cook with "Flax Eggs"

  • If you mix flax with water and let it sit for a bit it will turn into a jelly like consistency that used to be used in the fifties to help set hair in rollers. I have used this same method (I think one or two tbs. of flax mixed with about a 1/4 cup of water) as an egg replacer when I bake cookies. I can't tell the difference.

    lots of these new super smoothies have flax seeds in the, you can also buy golden linseed with is the same thing.

    They are little capsules of death.

    Ok, maybe just for me. But I have found that if I eat something with flaxseed in it, I have severe GI issues for the next 4-6 hours. I read labels on items marked "granola", "whole grain" etc because it's in alot of items these days.

    According to this, it's only raw flax seed that might have it.

    Thank you all for your input! I mixed about a teaspoon in my greek yogurt earlier. I will probably only eat it every now and then. Thanks again everyone!
