Hormones have a strong effect on weight loss. Those who don't know why should pick up a biochemistry text and do some reading. If you need a "case study" I can say that I lost 30 lbs in one year without changing my diet and exercise. I lost six sizes, my period, and frequently visited urgent care for fainting episodes. I also saw an increase in acne and aggression. The culprit-my testosterone had skyrocketed to levels comparable to a male. Hormones are powerful and to think that you can pump them into your body without altering its chemistry, whether effects are desirable or not, is just ignorant.
I am having my implant removed soon to avoid negative and possibly long lasting side effects of hormonal alteration.0 -
I have been on Implanon for a total of 4 years (had it replaced at the 3 year mark). When I initially got my first one inserted, I gained 10kg within a few months. The hormones increased my appetite so I ate more. I have slowly gained a little weight over the past 4 years but I just pass that off as not eating healthily. I have just started my weight loss journey and I'm hoping my Implanon does not effect my ability to lose weight.0

I've had mine in for 14 months and I've lost 42 pounds in the last 5 months. I did gain 20 pounds in the few months before starting on mfp but I can blame that on lots of chocolate cake and pizza.0

Hey ladies I just wanted to add my experiences .. I had my baby in August 2012 and implant in oct 2012. My periods were erratic the whole time sometimes lasting 2 weeks and maybe only stopping for a few days before starting again. My sex drive was non existent which trust me was not like me.. But I never realised that this was down to the implant I put it down to having a baby!! I had it removed ( painfully ) 2 weeks ago and apart from 5 days of severe pains in my womb area and sore nipples I feel so much brighter! My sex drive is back and I feel happy and positive all of a sudden. I only came to realise that the implant was probably responsible for a lot of how I'd been feeling when it came out. That said it was a very effective form of contraception but would I get it again ? Definitely not x0

I have been on Implanon for 2 years and am having it removed in 3 weeks. At first I was perfectly happy with it (after the constant bleeding stopped after the first 2-3 months), but over time I have had crazier mood swings and drastic weight gain. Besides those two negative effects I love it. No periods, and 3 years of protection is perfect.
I'm not sure how much of the emotion is from me or the hormones but every time I look in the mirror or recent pictures, I just want to ball my eyes out. I weighed 175 before I became pregnant. I gained 30 pounds then and had the implant inserted shortly after having my son. Over the past 2 years, I have gained another 40 pounds despite a change of diet and additional exercise at the gym.
I am hoping when I have the implant removed that I can have an easier time losing the weight. I miss the old me, the happier and confident me.
I've been on this Nexplanon for about 6 months now and I swear I've never gained weight in my stomach region in my life, always hips and thighs, and suddenly mine is starting to stick out...I've actually put on weight in the my tummy region. Honestly I don't know what to think, I've had great success on the pill without increased weight gain or hunger. I'll be honest my hunger levels have spiked for no apparent reason, and I'm not one to bash hormonal birth control, lord knows I've used it most of my life. But here we are 6 month into a new type of hormonal birth control and I've gained at least 15 lbs. in areas I usually don't gain weight...I'd say it's safe to say that it's affecting me negatively. Any haters can say what they want about me or my story but I KNOW my body and I AM an advocate for birth control and would NOT try to pin blame where it is NOT due, and yet here I am blaming my implant. I'm thinking of removing it and getting back onto my pill or just getting a diaphragm. I know I can remove the weight but something is going on hormonally I've never had craving for food so often, or felt down for no reason. My life is good I have no reason for depression and I know that's not what it is.0 -
hi i would want to know if you girls lost weight when u got the implanon removed?
I have been on it for 9 months and dont like the fact that i haven't got my period since. I Also gained 30 lbs i was at 120 & now im at 150
I would really want to know if it helped any of you since im getting it removed on September 24th0 -
Hi girls, I got implanon inserted 2 days after my son was born in July 2014. I managed to lose all the weight I gained during pregnancy quite quickly (22kilos in 8 weeks) but I think it was thanks to breastfeeding because I wasn't trying to lose weight.. Anyway, when I stopped breastfeeding when my son was 5 months, I started putting weight on and 6 kilos later I decided that it was time to try and lose the weight. I started on MFP and started insanity workout and after a month I had not lost anything not even 100grams!! I was really upset and decided to get my implanon removed. A week after the removal I had lost 2 kilos! Now one and a half month later I have lost 4 kilos and only have 2 more kilos to go!! Implanon is a *kitten*!1

My post is definitely not meant to argue with anyone I just want to relay my personal experiences with Nexplanon. I have been on it for 6 months and the first 3 months were great, my periods stopped which is the reason I got on to control heavy bleeding. The last 3 months however has been hell. Over the last year I lost 30 pounds with diet and exercise with a personal trainer. In the last 2 months I have gained 20 of that back. I am going to take responsibility because my eating habits definitely changed because I'm starving all of the time. Also, my face is extremely greasy and breaks out. I am 42 years old and have not had issues with acne. My hair falls out by the handfuls in the shower as others have mentioned. I have depression which I've not had before nexplanon, and just an overall feeling of no motivation at all.
I am getting my implant removed today, in actually about a half hour. I know my body well and I agree everyone reacts differently, mine definitely did not take well to the implant. I just want to validate others on this site who work their butts off and had the implant put in only to backslide. I would suggest getting it removed if that is the case for you.
I wish the best of luck to everyone in their weight loss journey!0 -
This is for everyone who wants to read a reliable medical source that is accredited information.
http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/contraceptive-implant/basics/risks/prc-200150739
My story began back in February of 2013 when I wanted to be put on a more substantial birth control method that I wouldn't have to remember to take. Throughout the last (almost) 3 years of being on the implanon I was exausted all the time, depressed, angry and unable to loose weight even with help from medical professionals. My whole personality changed. The chemical progestin caused 3 cysts to form of my overies. I took out the implanon 2 months before my removal date to try and deminish the cysts. I've had the implanon out for 2 days and my whole body is sore and I'm very crampy. I would highly suggest reading the informaion on the implanon from the mayo clinic. Good luck and research before you make changes to your body.0 -
I am SO GLAD I finally came across this page as I've been reaserching online, to try and see if anyone has been experiencing the same things I have with this implant. And thank God I am not alone!!! I'm getting mine taken out next Tuesday 1/26/16.0

After reading a lot of the posts here I think I'm going to make an appointment to have my Nexplanon removed. I started with the Implanon in 2011 after the birth of my son. Had the Nexplanon put in July 2014. Since then my weight has only gone up. I was never really heavy (until now) I could eat pretty much what I wanted and though I didn't go to the gym I lived an active lifestyle. Since being on the implant my weight has skyrocket. I'm 40lbs above my pre/post baby weight (lost it all after the birth). The kicker is I'm now 10lbs above the weight I was when I had my son. I'm going to call on Monday and make an appointment to have the implant removed. I can't do this any more.0
-
I am so happy that i have found this page as well. I have had the implant done 3 times and i think i am ready for a final removal.0
-
I had implanon for 3 years and nexplanon for 2 (took it out last month TTC).
Four the first 3.5 years my weight was stable without trying to diet or exercise differently.
In the last year and half I gained nearly 30 pounds. Wasn't the BC, it was me. my lifestyle changed, diet, less exercise, injury, etc. Yeah it had other effects but I don't blame it at all for my weight gain.
In fact, if I need BC in the future, as of now I would use nexplanon again.0 -
I had my implanon removed today after 2 1/2 years and boy let me tell you I am so happy I did. When i first had it inserted i weighed 155 today i weigh 196. I woke up one day almost 200 pounds and felt the worst i have ever felt in my life about my appearance. I have never been one to be skinny but never would i have thought i would have let myself go like this. I dont care what anyone says the implanon was a major cause with my weight gain. i would work out and eat right for 3-4 months and see hardly any change to the point i would just say "forget it" and go right back to my eating ways and not working out as much. I will say being happy in a relationship has had some part to my weight gain as well by eating anything i had a taste for, but there is just no reason i should of gained 40 pounds from the age 21-23. im disgusted and i just hope and pray that i see pounds shed along with a healthy life style im way more motivated now and feel like i do not have anything holding me back now that that im free from birth control. will keep you guys updated on my journy back to being 155 maybe even 1450
-
Had my Nexplanon out a few months ago and I don't think there was a change; I've been losing at a steady rate through all of it.0
-
I had my Implanon remove a little over a month and lost 11 pounds. Just by staying within my calories with out exercising. But I'm not sure if its related to birth control.0
-
Had mine removed in October and lost 7lbs within a week. I had been trying to lose for years and only ever managed a pound or two. Having it removed definitely helped. I've then gone on to lose a further 13lbs. I genuinely don't think that would have been possible with the implant!0
-
I have a nexplanon implant and have lost 21lbs in 6 weeks. I know hormones can affect appetite etc. But its a case by case. And most of the weight gain is down to a change in diet, you cannot gain weight if your body has used the calories. It is because the hormones can increase appetite but that still means you are eating more. There are cases where your body will be using the energy in incorrect ways but this is the minority and you would have had side effects such as fainting, light headedness and dizziness. Please don't blame the implant!
ps. I have a phd in chemistry so am not just talking rubbish1 -
All of the symptoms listed on the replies are things that I am battling with everyday!!
Weight gain
zero sex drive
fatigue
mood swings
depression
I am making an appointment to get mine out asap.
Thank for sharing your stories.0 -
"Implanon is why I can't lose weight!!"
"Don't call me fat!"
Honey, get a grip. I assumed since you want to lose weight, and are throwing a hissy fit about the evils of Implanon, that you were overweight. Perhaps I was mistaken. What word would you prefer? Overweight? Over your ideal of what your weight should be? Please, help me help you understand. I did say (REPEATEDLY) that it was *possible* and that only proper labwork could show you WHY that was the case. But, you may just be a special snowflake, so I'll give you that. :flowerforyou:[/quote]
Just so you know DamienKitten the implants are scientifically proven to increase weight gain over an extended period of time - I will cite 2 websites shortly as proof. Whether you gain weight or not is mainly due to your body's natural hormone level and metabolism prior to the implant. In my case I gained 50lbs while keeping the same lifestyle (I am a swimmer which burns calories so it was quite a shock to me and caused me to go the the doctor and ask what's going on). After getting the implant removed I lost the weight while still maintaining the same lifestyle. For you to attack anyone no matter how long ago it was was quite frankly disgusting. Instead of making people feel bad you should first do some in depth research and then make your comment - otherwise you don't belong on this site. Besides calling her a special case is horridly incorrect - it's quite common, although that doesn't make you wrong either. Everyone's body is different, but here's some government studies proving weight gain can be linked to the implants.
Exhibit A: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11368985
Direct Quote: "Both implants appear to induce mild insulin resistance . . ."
So that begs the question, what does mild insulin resistance cause????
Exhibit B: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_resistance
Direct Quote: (it's under signs and symptoms) "Weight gain, fat storage, difficulty losing weight – for most people, excess weight is from high fat storage; the fat in IR is generally stored in and around abdominal organs in both males and females; it is currently suspected that hormones produced in that fat are a precipitating cause of insulin resistance"
And all this leads to an increased chance of weight gain - so suprising o.O
Still for everyone who reads this, do make sure to eat healthily and maintain a regular exercise schedule as not doing so will only make the problem worse in which case the weight gain will not end as a result of removing the implant.

I can only speak for myself on this. I gained a lot of weight on zero birth control in 2009 going from 170 to 201 pounds. It was poor eating habits and drinking wine and not working out. I accept that. I decided to go to Lindora and I lost 30 pounds in 10 weeks. I was happy. I got into a relationship and put in the implanon. I loved it. No periods, slightly moody but I didn't care about that. No weight gain at all, (except when I ate badly) and I was pretty active so I would only gain like 6-7 pounds max and taking out the pizza brought me back to normal. Then I got a bit crazy on the diet tip again and went down to 155 on the implanon. After the 3 years the implanon was up and the relationship was over, I decided that this was working for me so i got the nexplanon (what they offered at planned parenthood, now the implanon was no longer available.) even though i was single, i was happy with the implanon so i figured i would be happy with the nexplanon. i am not. i started gaining the weight despite no changes in diet and working out up to 2 hours a day and 6 days a week. I got back up to 175. I would go effortlessly to the gym, went to eating no carbs, refined sugar or processed foods for months, still nothing, maybe a pound or two dropped. After about two years I gained back all the weight I lost years ago. I even went to Khloe Kardashian's nutrionist because she looks so amazing (and he is not cheap at all), adhered to his regime, worked out like a maniac and barely made a dent. I got to the point I was so frustrated I was like forget it. I'm killing myself and I can't lose weight. I had bloodwork done, I had my thyroid checked and everything was normal. I went back to Lindora, where I lost all the weight before recently and found out I was at 220. Currently, I am back to busting my *kitten* and it's been a month and I've lost 4 pounds. No cheating. No lying and all trying. I am single so I am getting the nexplanon removed tomorrow morning. Has anyone that has been on it for a long time gotten side effects later on? The Implanon worked great and I heard there were changes with the nexplanon that could be my reasoning for the gain. Regardless, I'm not sexually active so I might as well see how I do with it out. Oh and I started spotting about a month and a half ago. I had cut out the drinking in november (when I had done that before I dropped weight even without the diet and workouts) just dieting and working out now and still nothing. If it works for you, that's awesome. I really wish it did for me because I loved it but now I'll be back to getting a period and whatnot and hope to see some positive changes in the near future. Curious if anyone has been in my sitch?0

Most of the people "in your sich" here posted 4 years ago, but I'm sure some new ones will be along soon.1

I had the implant put in 2 years ago, it's been difficult to lose weight but after tirelessly counting calories and doing insanity, I have lost some inches and my clothes are starting to loosen. It's been tough, with slow successes. But I know it's possible for me to lose weight on it. When I try really hard and when I am in my home country (I live abroad now) over the holidays and can accurately count calories of food, the scale does go down.
As for the implant, I went on it thinking it would stop my period as mine involves taking a lot of medication before and during to help the pain. My doctor said it would lighten my period or stop it. It didn't do anything. My period is as regular as it was before and still a massive pain. So I'm considering getting it removed just because it didn't do what I had hoped. I wonder if the weight gain is linked to stopping the period?0 -
Hey ladies, I have had my implanon removed three days ago. I didn't have it removed for weightloss. *TMI* I had been getting my period too often. However in saying that, I live an incredibly active lifestyle and eat very well. I have noticed that the two years I have had the implanon have been really tough to improve my physique despite training 5 times a week, twice a day using programs like Kayla's BBG and Amanda Bisks FBFM (the latter is what I am currently doing and cannot recommend it highly enough).
I will continue working out and eating as per usual and will update you all on my progress over the coming weeks.0 -

Yes please let us know what the results are after.
I've also been finding it hard to lose weight since getting the implant.
I should be at end of my 3 years this Christmas, so I am planning on just getting it taken out. I had problems with my period being super painful all my life, so I was hoping it would lessen pain or lessen it completely. But it made no difference.

first study actually finishes with "Both implants appear to induce mild insulin resistance but no significant change in serum glucose levels. These alterations in carbohydrate metabolism should have no clinical significance in healthy women."...and it was done on 80 women..not a big enough study to conclude insulin resistance is caused...and this was done in 2001...almost 20 years ago...
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/734669_12 here is a more recent one...
https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/archives/fdaDrugInfo.cfm?archiveid=63647
"In clinical studies, mean weight gain in US IMPLANON users was 2.8 pounds after 1 year and 3.7 pounds after 2 years. How much of the weight gain was related to IMPLANON is unknown. In studies, 2.3% of IMPLANON users reported weight gain as the reason for having IMPLANON removed."
and wikipedia can be altered by non medical folks so that is not a source.
Yes Birth control can cause increase appetite which leads to weight gain but it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that they are watching calories if they don't want to gain or if they want to lose...
Yes Birth control can lead to water retention up to 20lbs...max...but not 40 or 50lbs...that is based on how much people are eating...so it comes down to this...
BC can impact your body so do the research but don't blame it for weight gain or inability to lose...that is all about what is going in your mouth...and only you control that.2 -
To those saying that Nexplanon or Implanon does not "make" or help you gain weight...
Why does the Dr. specifically tell you that weight gain is a potential side effect? Or why is three quarters of the comments on here of women complaining that the problem they're having is with weight gain? The whole point in the implant is to trick your body into thinking it's pregnant by not releasing the egg. I mean did any of you do any research before having this put into your body?

The reason why it is said that it does not make you gain weight is because it can't...it has no calories.
If it does help you gain weight it is either one of two ways....increase water retention (not real weight) or increases your appetite which if you are not careful will have you eating a lot more than you think if you don't track.
The reason why it is listed as a side effect on all birth control method that are hormonal is due to the way the clinical trials are run.
The get a group of (in this case women) together and pay them money to take their drug/have it inserted.
Then send them home and tell them..."let us know if anything odd happens at all"...so these women go home and they gain weight due to increased appetite and report back ...omg I've gained 25lbs this year...holy crap.
This is now listed as a side effect of the drug...because it was reported as unusual...but remember these women are not being monitored in anyway or kept on a calorie controlled diet...that would be to expensive.
Weight gain can only happen in one of two instances...
Extra calories ingested or water/glycogen weight...3 -
DamianaKitten wrote: »Umm I think birth control does have a bit to do with weight gain. Yes you are choosing to put the food in your mouth, but elevated levels of progesterone affect your body comp, how that food is metabolized, etc. and MOST importantly makes it much more difficult to lose that weight. I had mine for a year and a half, gained a bit but mostly had trouble losing the weight. Had it removed due to other side effects a few weeks ago and have had the most substantial weight loss I have experienced in that entire year and a half despite not changing my routine in the slightest. Yes you can control some aspects of weight gain on hormonal contraceptives, but to say the two are unrelated is simply untrue.
I'm not having any trouble losing weight. Nor am I having any trouble changing my body comp. My weight gain and muscle lost came from 1) loving to eat and 2) not exercising. Could you site a study that says birth control effects your metabolism in a direct and meaningful way? It's quite possible that the hormones were not right for you, but for anyone to make a sweeping statement about it being "because of birth control" is ridiculous. Plenty of us are losing while on it. To say that they're always related, is simply untrue.
Have you even educated yourself on the subject?
1. Why are you on here calling people fat? If you don't want to be helpful don't participate in the discussion. And word to the wise check yourself (and your profile pic) before you're describing other people as fat
2. Hormonal changes CAN but will NOT ALWAYS be directly linked to weight loss and gain. Here's the actual nexplanon site wich lists weight gain as a side effect.
https://www.nexplanon.com/side-effects/
3. Along with mood swings weight gain is the most common side effect of this particular birth control
Not everyone's body processes these hormones the same. To say you have no problems so no one else ever should have a problem is completely ignorant.
where was anyone called fat???
except in your post which is getting reported
educated means you know how studies are run which means you know that they are not controlled and that the calories are not in check and they are told to report any "unusual" things...less than 5% reported weight gain....and I have the studies to show that...do you have studies showing weight gain is directly related to birth control?0
