Anyone a member of this gym? I'm considering joining because it's only 20 a month. But I want opinions since it's national.

everyone is going to ***** about this gym but ive been there a year. love it. so many different types here so its perfect for anyone. if you just want to **** around on the machines - thats ok . guys pumping iron too. i like intense workouts and weight lifting so i do the 30 min workout step thing , mix it up&add in kettlebells or wtv you want - again anything goes.
so many machines you wont wait. clean. so nice to tan or do the massage beds after a workout.
people say there is a pizza or bagel day ? NEVER seen food there, only lil tootsie rolls on the desk. only taken one once... its what 5 cals? big deal.

there is an annual fee of 60 or something. you pay it in june. can cancel anytime (in person tho they need a signature)
and not 24/7 closed friday and sat nights around 7 i think ?

I love it, but I am a cardio guy myself. Never any problem finding a machine and it is a great price. Hate the purple, but it is not worth the extra $30 a month to not look at purple.

Their basic membership is $10 per month. You don't need the "black club" card (which is $20) unless you want to hop between clubs or use the tanning / massage booths.

I've been a member for a couple years, going regularly for 2014 (nearly every day).
It depends on the gym you go to, so scout them out first.

The one in downtown Milwaukee was pretty decent, other than difficult parking, a small, cramped locker room & rude/scary customers (esp. at night, when parking was less of a problem).

I transferred to the one in Menomonee Falls, which was nice overall, but the manager told me he had video of me in the locker room (supposedly doing something "inappropriate"... like what, walking to the shower naked?).

Now I'm at one in south Milwaukee, which is pretty crappy, but it's what's available. Any other 24-hour gym in the area costs more.
The weight machines are poor quality (probably the low-end commercial unit), some ellipticals make funny sounds (clunk), the headphone jack to listen to TV doesn't work on some cardio machines, the lockers are too small to set a gym bag on the floor & too short top to bottom, it's hard to put a lock on the lockers because of how the handle is designed, there aren't enough lockers, the shower drains back up, parking is not adequate, the neighborhood is dangerous, the TV's aren't labelled with channels, and both the overhead & the TV in the locker room are always too loud.

Apparently not all PF locations are 24/7, but the majority are.
First Monday night is pizza, second Tuesday morning is bagels.

It's kind of a thing around here for people to look down their noses at Planet Fitness, but I love it! I started at 338lbs, and am working my way up from little activity at all, so the variety and number of cardio machines suits my needs. I'm not into weightlifting beyond moderate resistance training. If I were, I can see how the lack of equipment would be an issue.

There are pizza and bagels once a month, but no foods are off limits in moderation, right? If somebody started a topic saying they were giving up pizza forever, some of the PF bashers would be the first ones saying "I eat pizza and it fits into my day," so I don't really get the hate.

I was a member for a year. Didn't care for it. The amount of free weights is ridiculously small considering how many patrons they had. The one i attended also had only one squat rack and one cable system. I ended up staying there for 2 hours just to get my full workout in. They do have an over abundance of treadmills. I noticed the locker rooms were dirty and the tanning beds were out of service half the time. I blame that on management though. Finally, that stupid "lunk" alarm. I lift roughly 300 on squat, deadlift, and bench and even though I set them down as lightly as I could they always pushed that button. They pride themselves on a "judgement" free zone yet setting down that much weight is damn near impossible to do completely silent. They frown upon people pushing limits and lifting heavy. Which surprisingly is judgemental. I found that extremely hypocritical and petty. And also, their whole cancel at any time advertisement was complete BS. I had orders from the Army taking me to a different post and I had to call the regional manager to cancel even though I had orders in hand. Once again could have just been the managers in my region but I experienced a lot of rudeness. The price is excellent but it all depends on what you are looking for in a gym. For some it is perfectly ideal. If you are an experienced lifter, don't plan on setting new PR's or pushing yourself unless you have 2+ hours for your workout.

Even among national chains, every gym has its own feel -- IMHO, the gym regulars contribute much more to the overall ambiance of the gym than the management. The only way to find out whether or not it will be a good fit for you is just to go and check it out. Try to visit at the same time of day that you would be working out, and focus more on what other people are doing and how the gym feels than the sales pitch they're giving you.

The planet fitness near me is the bomb diggity! Only one squat rack, but apparently I'm the only person in the history of this particular location to squat, so I've never had to wait for it. The dumbells don't go up very high, but as a beginner that shouldn't pose a problem. BUT I've traveled to two other PF's, and neither one of them had a squat rack. And they were crowded. And run down. But circuit machines galore! It depends what you are looking for in your gym. Check it out before you blindly buy a membership, as they seem to vary greatly by location.

As a Soldier who might have to move around a lot I can see how you might have very limited gym options, but otherwise, I think PF makes it very very clear that experienced lifters aren't their target audience. At least the ones around me do. It'd be like Einstein sitting in on a science class at a community college. Of course it wouldn't suit his needs, but it doesn't mean the class is worthless. It's appropriate for the level of the students.

I've never seen them charge more than $10 a month.

That's 50% of what they're offering to you.

The pizza and bagel parties are a lot of fun. I'd do it just for that.
