Question for the LADIES: Periods and weight loss

Hi everyone :)
I am on my period and i am experiencing weight gain, but I am not quite sure whether it's because It's my time of the month or not. What does the scale show you when having your period?? I am kinda freaking out about the gain...

My weight ALWAYS goes up a few pounds during that time of the month. It's completely normal. Don't worry.

If your calories are within your goal, you're not gaining fat. If you've been losing weight eating X amount, and you continue eating X amount, you'll continue losing, despite water fluctuations.

Repeat this to yourself every 30 minutes until your period is done!

    Trust the process!

I would recommend staying far away from the scale until 2 or 3 days after it stops. I'm usually up 2 to 4 pounds during that time as well. Yikes!
  • always always gain 1 kg. like a clockwork. but it goes back down after.

It's absolutely normal to retain water from hormonal changes. Be kind to your body and try not to sweat the small stuff. Stress is much worse than a little extra water weight ;)

Yeah - skip the weigh in the week of your period. It'll totally be a 'false read'. I can gain up to 7 lbs in water weight :(

Typically I gain 3+ pounds right after starting and it can be 2 weeks later before I'm back down to the prior weight. Granted, I'm losing very slowly now (almost at goal, small deficit) but its been this way all along.

I easily "gain" 7lbs of water weight when I'm on my period. Either skip your weigh ins or just remind yourself that it's water weight.

Yup, I also gain 1-3 pounds, beginning a few days before my period comes. It takes almost a week after it leaves for my weight to come back down to where it was before (if I'm trying to lose weight, if I wait long enough to weigh myself after my period is over, it's often a surprisingly big drop, to a new lower number).

Don't even bother weighing yourself around then, unless you want to know exactly how much water you retain! The numbers are just discouraging. It wasn't until I had been maintaining for a while that I dared to weigh myself at that time of the month, out of curiosity to know how much water weight I retain then.

Is this also the case when taking the contraceptive pill? I've never really been sure as a period whilst taking the Pill isn't a 'real' period...

I gain anywhere from 4-7 lbs on my period. Right now I am on prover to regulate my cycle after a year of significant loss and I am seeing my weight gain upwards of 9 lbs this last once. Within 3 days of my cycle ending I am back down to where I was premenstrual. I skip weighing from the first sign of my cycle til 3 days after now because it only upsets me. It's mostly water weight, unless you are eating extra during that time and then you can have weight gain. I totally get the desire to snack more, I try to make sure I am extra active during my cycle so I can eat more snacks
