foot injury prospects

HI guys, I recently injured my foot and found out that I have a moderate to severe partial tear of the “Toe Plate tendon” under the ball of my left foot. The surgeon also said that I completely tore the ligament attaching my first bone in my big toe to the ball of my foot. He is discussing surgery options now… I was wondering if it’s possible to return to my previous exercises with out the surgery. Or will surgery be needed to correct the tear and allow me to run again. Right now I can’t put any weight on the ball of my foot and push off with the toes… I injured it doing Ju Jitsu and hope to eventually return to that and boxing along with running.

One Dr I met with told me that I would NOT be able to do any of those activities again without surgery…. Now the surgeon is telling me that this is a very bad place to be injured and he’s not certain that surgery will fix me! They both have been calling it turf toe. Is there anyone here that has had a similar injury? If so did you have surgery or not and how’s your foot doing? I’m really bummed and don’t want this to be a life altering injury! I’d rather amputate it! Thanks for all your help.

Oh if there are any foot specialists or other Dr's on here I would be grateful to hear their opinions. I know it’s impossible to say, "You will or won't be able to do something because of an injury", but any past experience from a medical professional or others will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a tough spot. I would look for a Dr who specializes in sports injuries and consult him. Your local Voc Rehab center may be able to point you towards one.

I'm no foot professional... I just wanted to give you my sympathies and can empathise with feeling bummed about an injury and proposed treatment of unknown outcome.

I guess you could google "Grade III Turf Toe Surgery Outcomes" or something like that and familiarise yourself with the research? There's bound to be some info out there. I'm assuming you're a grade III as you stated you have a complete tear?

Here is some research I found just browsing... http://www.lowerextremityreview.com/article/managing-turf-toe-in-football-players

There must be more out there.

    Stay positive.

Thank you both for your responses. I'm currently working with a foot surgeon, who's considered on of the top surgeons in his speciality..ie feet....He's been quite honest and upfront with me. He said he's quite conservative and really will not operate unless he thinks he can help me. I was just bummed out when i heard that I might not be able to work out as hard as I used to. I will do some research you suggested and see what I come up with. thanks again.
