gauging effort/calories?

how do i gauge the effort in things like "calisthenics: light/moderate effort" or "vigorous"?
i'm doing work out video's (result's fitness) that are interval training, so this was the closest description i could find. are there any better descriptions i haven't found?
i started with "vigorous effort" because, well it was. but now almost 2 weeks in, it is easier. i'm still sweating away, just not sure if my effort/calories burned should change.
is there any rule of thumb for this?

I lot of it has to do with your heart rate. That is why they have sensors on cardio equiptment at the gym. It will tell you what your rate is and what range you should be in for your age. The are normally three levels. Not sure how you would rate it at home but I'm sure you could find something online.
Best of luck,
