I have been doing this for about a week now and I feel like I'm not doing enough!
I am trying to keep the calories under 1200 but I find myself wanting to eat junk! What other kinds of foods are you guys eating that are healthy and filling at the same time. I am a single mom to 3 year old and I need to keep his little body satisfied but I don't want to cook 2 different meals.. What are you other moms doing?

Ok so there's a couple of things in your post I want to address:

    1) You should probably reassess your goals- 1200 is the absolute lowest that MFP will allow you to aim for, so if it is setting to 1200, it means that you should likely slow down your weight loss a bit. As we get closer to our weight loss goals (in your about 10lbs), our bodies have a harder time losing weight without straining organs, so if you are close to your ideal weight, 1lb should be your max, .5 lbs is probably more sensible. You should try not to ever go under 1200 calories.

    2) Plenty of good, filling foods out there- look for high protein. I rely on greek yogurt to get me through almost always. Also peanut butter, veggies and hummus, and milk.

    3) Exercise doesn't just have to be a gym workout- walk around or play with your son, even house cleaning or just stretching- these burn calories which you should generally be eating and will give you some room in terms of your calorie goal.

    4) Cooking for your son should be an exercise in teaching him to eat healthy and balanced as well- a balanced meal can include all things he would eat but if there are ever things you would like to eat that you don't think he would like/dont want to feed him, just sautee it on the side and add to your own dish.

Welll you definitely are not eating enough if you are eating less than 1200. No wonder you are craving junk, your body wants more calories. Veggies and protien are very filling. Your son is young, get him in the habit now of eating healthy.

    Hang in there!

chicken is a good meal. Whole wheat pasta and speg sauce. whole wheat pasta with steamed veggies and a little cheese makes a great meal. Tuna, light on the mayo. Fiber bars and oatmeal (watch sugar content) are very filling. Keep healthy foods around. Easy to grab snacks such as triscuits or wheat thins, granola bars, or almonds. My new favorite is sarah lee 45 calorie multi grain delight bread with turkey, ham or pastrami. Soups are very filling as well, go easy on the creamy soups though. Make sure your drinking enough water, which can also make you feel full. Good luck!
  • Hello! I am a mother to 2 little boys, 5 years and 17 months. Here are foods we love:

    Breakfasts:

My boys love eggs and spinach! Soooo good! you can make egg whites too, get organic whenever you can.

Organic Waffles - I cannot remember what they are called, maybe Natures Path? But Fred Meyer sells them in the natural section and they are about 100 calories a waffle, and delicious and GLUTEN FREE. Eating less gluten results in faster weight loss. You can each have a waffle dressed to your liking. Add some peanut butter on yours for added protein.

Oatmeal - yes, great flavors and healthy options out there, do some oatmeal with a cup of blueberries or strawberries in the morning.

    Dinners or Lunches

Seafood - in moderation for little one. Clams, crab, salmon - all filling and healthy if cooked with oil! (we love Safflower Oil, proven to help weight loss and be a better substitute than butter!)

Salads: yes salads for little ones! He will copy you. Our family loves spinach salad. Add your own veggie toppings, we put in mini salad shrimp to add extra protein at times. He can have croutons, you can have mushrooms, walnuts, cheese, etc. Trader Joes has some great in expensive organic salad dressings, you don't need more than a serving (check the back for suggested servings).

Quinoa! I made some tonight and mixed some black beans in it. Total calories was less than 200 and it was delicious! It is VERY filling and made with tons of protein, really healthy for both of you! I sauteed up some veggies the other night (mushrooms, onions, garlic, celery) and put it in the Quinoa. If you have a rice maker, you can make it in there and it will even be ready for 2 or 3 days in a row if you have it set to "warm" so it's fast, easy, healthy and ready.

Grilled chicken with avocado on top. Sooo good! My husband makes the best kind. Add some rice or Quinoa on the side for some added grains.

Tortillas and cheese. Get low carb low calorie wheat kind at your local store. Put in a serving of cheese. I like to spice mine up by adding chopped onions and mushrooms. Kids will love it too (maybe not the mushrooms).

    Snacks:
Organic fruit rollups, fun for all and only about 100 HEALTHY calories

Almonds, everyone (except our baby) love these to snack on. A little high in calories but fills you up, healthy needed fats and just stick to about 1/4 a cup.

    Rice cakes with Peanut Butter

Fruits! Blueberries, strawberries, pears, apples you name it!

Veggies! Even if you have to sauté them (some things are just more fun cooked). Try to still eat raw ones whenever you can, to get better nutrients.

Popcorn! We love air popped popcorn. If you don't have one, get one off amazon for $19. NEVER eat microwave again. Worst thing for you. You will save massive money in the long run and lose weight. We make our with safflower oil and Sea Salt - toss your old salt ASAP! It's fantastic and everyone in the family gobbles it up!

Do you have a trader joes? They are a life savor. So many healthy options and lots of fast ones too for moms on the go. They even have prepares already chopped veggies- cause let's face it, you probably don't have a lot of time to sit and cut up veggies for dinner with a 3 year old running around!

Stay focused! It takes about 2 weeks to make something a habit. Keep telling yourself that you are going to fight this and make a change! Your son might have a hard time with healthy foods at first, but once you switch him over - he will start to love it. And just think, you are setting him up for a lifestyle too! Kids do what their parents do! Toss all the temptations, get them out of the house. Start fresh. Eat organic foods from the earth and you will feel better and more full.

Focus on high protein and fiber foods, low carbs. Focus on the earth foods!

I know I have tons more food ideas, so just message me if left too much out! STAY STRONG! Tell yourself you can do it, and then show everyone!
