I think that if you are mainly receiving sugar from natural sugars you are probably doing OK. I have found that the yogurt I have almost every day is really high in sugar. So are the "healthy" frozen meals I take to work for lunch.

Fruits have natural sugars in them. They count towards your total carbs.

and actually raw natural honey is very good for you. It has lots of nutrients and doesn't send your blood sugar sky rocketing like refined sugars.

That and dark molasses are the best sweeteners out there and they are so much sweeter than refined sugar that you don't need nearly as much.

Of course not everyone is a molasses lover.

I have one or two servings a fruit per day. Well I try to. And try to stick with fresh fruit. A bunch of grapes are much more filling with less sugar than raisins.

I too go over. The past few weeks I have really been trying to watch it too but it doesn't take much to go over. The only sweet treat I have been eating is Dove or Hershey dark chocolates - just 3 pieces of those and bam OVER! If I want a mocha now, I use Hershey's special dark powder instead of getting it from coffee shop.

Some days I go through and subtract the grams from fruit, vegetables and milk. I don't worry about those as much though since they are natural. It is important to eat fruits and vegetables for nutrients although I limit high sugar fruits such as bananas and pineapple.

I do also eat Greek yogurt with added sugar - but it is natural, real sugar not artificial or HFCS. I need to start trying to add fruit and maybe a little agave nectar or stevia to the plain yogurt. Even though some people see draw backs to dairy, I try to get enough calcium and the Greek Yogurt is super high in protein.

I think best thing to do is eliminate added sugars and only allow the healthier sweetened things a few times in the week. I sent you a friend request if you want to view my diary.

From what I have read you are so much better off eating an apple than one of those fake crap 100 calorie packs! There is fiber and all sorts of other nutrients in an apple - the 100 calorie pack provides no nutritional benefit. Maybe just a low cal quick fix for a sweet/salty/munchy craving.

Also avoid any artificial sweeteners - they are detrimental to your health. Stevia or agave nectar are safer alternatives.

I always look at it this way......what will I get more nutrients from? A piece of fruit or 100 calorie package of processed junk? Fruit has natural sugars with vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. There is NOTHING in the 100 calorie package that your body needs to function properly.

If you eat fruits and dairy (without added sugar) to it, it's okay to be over on sugars.

I posted this to someone else asking about going over from natural sugars (rather than added) - so I'll post it here, too:

How much are you going over? While natural sugars are certainly better for you, they shouldn't be disregarded altogether... even fruit sugar/milk sugar needs to be consumed in moderation. Sometimes people forget that a reduced calorie intake to lose weight = reduced intake of everything, including fruit, dairy, etc! If you ate 2-3 pieces of fruit a day on maintenance, you should only be eating 1-2 a day when trying to lose weight. Total sugar should be kept at a reasonable % of your total calories - if you're eating too much dairy/fruit for your overall calorie consumption level, then that % is going to be too high. Just something to remember. :)

Regarding molasses - it is NOT the most natural/unprocessed sugar out there... I would avoid it, personally. It's somewhat better than cane sugar, but not much. Read this - molasses is the byproduct of the process at step 6. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/119250-how-sugar-is-made

You're better off sticking to raw, unflitered honey and pure maple syrup for truly natural sweeteners.

I've taken my sugars down to 15g per day and never go over, so maybe I can help. My carbs I keep at 120 (6 servings of 20g of carbs). That's because carbs eventually become sugar. Sugar tells your body "Hey, store these fats I ate," and less sugar says "You can burn some of this fat." That's my understanding. While some people say this is unhealthy, I have 2 cousins in there 40's that went from 260 lbs to 180 and bike 70 miles at a time... That's in just a year!! I've lost 8 lbs. in 3 weeks by doing this alone. (I'm a busy at-home mom too though and was initially eating a lot and 180 lbs.) What do I do? I eat blueberries, blackberries, strawberries (lower sugar fruit)... and just a handful at a time with a cereal like rice chex (low sugar). If I do pears or bananas or higher sugar fruits, I do "just a few slices" with my breakfast lunch or dinner. Mixing up sweet tasting stuff in handfuls with something else your eating can help you get the taste, but not overdo it. Also, I drink herbal apple, blueberry and lemon teas and use Truvia as a sweetener (Truvia is 0 Sugar). Milk has a tremendous amount of sugar in it per serving (even skim!... which is what I was drinking). Now I drink Almond Breeze UNSWEETENED milk (This is milk made with Almonds (0 sugar). They have a plain brand and a Vanilla brand. Honestly, neither are as ideal tasting to me as regular milk, but man, it's nice to be able to eat cereal AND move down in pant's sizes). You can also switch to Soy or another alternative milk. I buy all of my foods at an every day grocery store, but I go to the whole foods store once a week for two things: Almond milk and Joseph's Sugar-Free Peanut Butter. And when I want a taste of chocolate, I have a few pieces of Sugar-Free Dove chocolate. I snack on cheese and saltred or plain nuts- filling and low sugar. Hope this helps in some way.
