It's great to see someone finally posted this! How many of us has tried all of those diets, and they started to work, but as soon as we stopped them, the weight cam back on. My husband says the same thing, it is not rocket science, it is eat healthy, moderation, and excersice. We all want to blame our lifestyle on something, but in the end, it is how we personally treat ourselves and how we eat and keep moving.
One diet I cannot grasp is the HCG (sorry for those who are fans...) but a friend of mine loves it because she has lost 12 pounds so far, and she just started it. The diet only allows 500 calories, is this starvation?! She argues with me, but I know that as soon as she stops the diet, she will gain it back. She is a heavy person to begin with and ate a huge amount of calories, of course a great weight loss will happen, at first.
Life is not a diet, it is a way of living healthy and still enjoying "treats" every so often.:happy:0 -
Perhaps your rant would've been better suited for the Fun and Games thread instead of the General Diet and Weight Loss HELP thread.
Just my opinion.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion...
But this is not fun and games and should not be posted there. For some people this is life and death and a serious issue.
People ARE looking for quick fixes. There is no quick fix with weight loss. It is diet and exercise. Calories in- Calories out. Plain and simple.

I agree there are NO magic pills, or shakes and pudding or anything other than watching what you eat and exercising that will make you lose weight. I think these companies prey on others low self esteem and convince them that these will help. It tool you a long time to gain all the weight, and it will take you a long time to lose it to!

On exercise, it REALLY helps to have someone to exercise with you. I feel it helps you to push your limits because you don't want to get behind.
Unfortunately, my current exercise partner is a teenager that dances for a hobby, and I am out of shape after 4 years of not much to do. I do as much as I can to keep up, but right now, not so flexible or in shape. She's nice and tells me, "No, you didn't do that bad." But my mind says I should be able to do one thing, and my body disagrees right now.
It will come in time. I use to be there...I can get there again.0 -
LOVE IT!!! People ask me all the time when did you start to diet? And I simply say its not a diet its a life style change. I have been working my butt off and am enjoying the results. I love to read the posts on this site, it really helps alot.0

I completely agree with your way of thinking, hard work and dedication will pay off in the end, end of story. Unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way. Our society is full of convenient and easy fixes, and that is what people want when it comes to weight loss. This thread isn’t going to stop them from putting up post about this fad diet or that magic pill; all we can do is put in our two cents and hope it helps. I hope everyone reads this and those who believe in a quick fix come to realize that there not going to work forever. Just keep spreading the word that exercise and eating well will work you just have to stick with it!

There's a lot of work in re-educating yourself to eat clean. I'm working through it now after years of being an 'elite' athlete with no time. No i'm retired from competition and am looking forward to doing it right.0

I'm not claiming it didn't, nor was I complaining about the 'yelling'. I was responding to a poster who said he didn't get the impression the OP wasn't yelling.
Also, I never said people weren't entitled to their opinions. I 100% believe they are which is why you won't soon find these fad diet posts disappearing off this site.
I've done fad diets that have worked for me and helped jump start my weight loss journey (the kick in the pants as someone put it), but I wholly agree that the way to go is diet and exercise and that it can be done without spending a penny (though it's much easier for me having invested in a home gym and some motivating music).
My only point is that I think we should be supportive and encouraging of one another rather than by sarcastic and snarky (as I believe some posts were) with each other. You can preach the good word without cramming it down people's throats. They tend to be more receptive to it.0 -
And here I was expecting to get bombarded with "you're so mean" comments! Oh, and I eat my bacon - couldn't live without it on Saturday mornings - but it's usually followed by 3-6 hour bike ride with a 3500+ calorie burn!!! Thanks for the comments...you guys are what keep me on this site. Let's keep trying to put the diet book publishers out of business and change the minds of the folks on here that are destined to be fit with the right guidance!!!
Completely AGREE 100%!! Not just the diet book publishers, but the "shakes", the "meal replacement" businesses, the "supplements", the "shots", the "WLS/Bariatric" crap. It's all CRAP.0 -
I posted this on my profile, and needed to expand my audience due to the reponse: "I am SICK of reading posts in the forums about "diets". From 'slow-carbs' to 'cottage cheese diets' to this, to that. Can we have a site dedicated to sane principles? Ones that avoid magic pill solutions to our issues of fitness? Clean eating, burning more than we take in through smart, intense (on a personal scale) exercise. That's it. That's all. There's no shortcut. No way around it. Do this or be out of shape. No excuses. No BS."
It's not fancy. It's clean and simple. Eat good foods, if you decide to not eat good foods, do it in moderation (I enjoy foie gras, pizza, and pasta still to this day...it's just not often, and not in copious amounts). Work out hard - by that I mean push yourself. And balance your input with your output. That's it. Nothing else to it. You don't need a book. You may need a kick in the *kitten* to get going...nothing wrong with that, we all do now and then. But please, put the Zone and Atkins and Bacon Diets, etc, etc. books publishers out of business by realizing there's no quick fix!!!

I think the people with opposition to this post are reading too much into it.
He is not telling anyone, "you're fat and not trying hard enough." He is trying to make the point that eating healthy should NOT be considered a diet. He does not expect everyone to be at his level. He is trying to help by passing on knowledge that he learned/realized through his transformation.
For those sensitive ones out there, calm down. He's not trying to hurt your feelings, he's not saying you are a failure. I would summarize his post with, "fad diets don't work. Eat healthy and exercise."
If you consider what you're doing a diet, then the day will come that you QUIT your diet because you're tired of DIETING. that's why it is a lifestyle. Sure it sucks that not everyone learned how to eat properly In there childhood, but that's what you are doing (or should be doing) - learning healthy nutrition.0 -
It bothers me that the assumption is that people track their food because they want to lose weight. I don't. I track my food because I'm on a diet. And yes, it is relatively low-carb and very calorie restricted, and weight loss is not my first priority. Being on the right diet is.0

I'll admit, I have a little help to help burn faster however, when you start to quit making excuses for what you eat is when you can start putting your life back together and change old bad habits. I am here to make myself accountable for what I do and eat. It takes time, practice and a little trial and error. I agree 100% but, not everyone can push themselves like others can and have to start somewhere and this is a tool to help get us there. The ONLY safe way to lose weight, is by eating right and exercising.0

I agree. I can see why people try those fads. They want the weight off and they want it off now, everyone wants that. But the truth is, it's not going to happen. It's also so satisfying to work hard and do the right things to get it off and to do something in fitness you thought you could never do. For me it's running, never thought I could. I lost weight and was able to run a half marathon!
My friend has done most fad diets & gained more than b4. I really could not be bothered with them, i am more into eating healthy . Its just i need to re-learn all my portion sizes (putting to much on plate & not leaving anything) make better choices & retrain myself to stop when full.
FTR-I didn't say everyone wants to do a fad diet, I just said that I can see why others would find them appealing.0 -

I have to say that some of this I agree with while others I do not. Not bashing, this is just how I look at it;
Some people here say that this is not a diet site, but thats not entirely true. It may not be a diet site for YOU, but for others it is. I know that I am eating a lot less now because of counting calories than I was before. That is because I am putting myself on a diet. I eat right and I exercise as a part of a healthy diet. The very word means to watch what you eat.

However, I do agree that people need to stop buying mirical diet pills, patches, books, magazines and figure out what works for you. Not everyone is the same so not everything will work for everyone. Find what does it for you and stick with it. THAT'S the right diet for you, not some book that was published to make someone a lot of money by preying on the overweight and diet crazed people of the world. Those people dont care about you and honestly dont care if their system works. all they want is your money.0 -

I don't mean to poke fun...but I was serious in what I was saying, but it wasn't aimed at anyone that isn't in shape or has problems staying on track. That's my point - we all have been there. It is aimed at the "solutions" that so many people put out there and promote...whether they do so knowingly or not. And if it came across harshly, and STOP! looked like I was yelling, maybe I was, and maybe that's exactly what it's going to take to get someone's attention. It's meant to simplify and clarify the solution.
One person who was against my post messaged me and asked for help in getting going on their program, so I'm going to put that effort forward as long as they do. I'd challenge each of you on here that are in support of my to find one person on your 'friends' list that is a chronic 'dieter' and try to change their mind. I couldn't agree more! I once had a stand up argument with a colleague who was moaning about being overweight - I told her the answer was simple, eat less and do more: she came back with "its not that simple".... erm.... YES IT IS!0

First of all - I'm on board with that bacon diet.
Secondly - I don't think the initial poster was harsh at all. It's called honesty. How many MFP posts have you read about people who have a goal to lose 10 lbs a month for 5 or 6 months, and for every comment that says "DON'T! It's not healthy! You probably won't succeed and you'll get discouraged!" there is one that says "You can do it! Go for it! My neighbor did it!" I for one did not sign up for this to be coddled and lied to. As many people have said, this is not easy, this is not temporary, and there is no quick fix. To all my friends - PLEASE BE HONEST WITH ME! And if you have to use all caps, by all means, go ahead!0 -
