I know my downfall is estimating my portion size. I have found many tools that help me estimate what 200 calories of food look like, what size 3 oz of meat is, etc. What non-scale, non-measuring cup tools or memory tricks do you use?

I love this web site: http://www.diet-blog.com/07/what_do_300_calorie_meals_look_like.php
This particular page shows you what a 300 calorie meal looks like and then breaks it down for you.
Here's an example:
Breakfast - 290 Calories
1 whole wheat English muffin
2 pats low fat butter
1 hard boiled egg
1/2 cup of fruit
8 oz fruit juice
8 oz water0 -

I love you! I swear I was just thinking about this today. No wonder I'm starving half the time, I'm miscalculating my portions at times.
Thank you so much for the visuals.0 -

Is that water really coffee? And my guess is black coffee (no milk/sugar) is also 0cals (like water)?0 -

Your portion sizes of now and then, says a lot! The visual references are great, if you can really do it. However, as a human, we are visual creatures and because of that, I'll stick to my food scale to keep me honest. Kudos to those that can visually measure.
Awhile back, I read a tip that I thought was interesting. Looking for cookbooks?? Look for OLD ones when portions were of normal sizes and not supersized, that we all think is normal now.0 -

Ya...black coffee is 0 calories. Kind of like tea.0 -
I loved the then and now post! That is so crazy that things have changed so much!0

I have to measure with the scale. It was the only thing that broke my weight loss plateau. I believe I was subconciously making the portions bigger and convincing myself they were "within spec". I have gotten very adept at using that handy little device and I have been losing steadily at a 1.8 pound/week clip since early November last year.
Cool pics, though...made me hungry!0 -
